Electing Sweetie

Monique,
The press prefers fomenting fights between the candidates. Lastly, Obama attended the church that he did to get connected to a community that he wanted to help. This is a church where ministry means helping the poor, the sick and the frail elderly. If you don't understand that kind of a church, then you don't understand anything about this story. I attended a church for years where the southern minister was a bigot. I had an attachment to the people in the church. I was a teacher. I was in the choir and a men's quartet. The minister was kindly towards me and my family. Just because someone has some ideas that you don't respect, you don't throw them away and throw away an organized group of people who you share many goals with. At least, I don't and I think it is a reasonable course. Obama is not a racist. He is half white. His mother is white and is from Kansas. How does that get overlooked? In truth, we have seen character from Obama unlike in practically any other politician of late. He is respectful of people, but not a whimp. He stands up for himself and asserts his ideas. He does not attack people. He does attack ideas that he doesn't agree with. This is why many people who are close to him are realizing that he could be a great leader. Don't pass up the chance to support someone who has real character and integrity. posted 05/16/2008 at 21:59:24
If you haven't seen that it has been Clinton who has stooped to new lows, not Obama. Obama hasn't been passive aggressive. He has attempted to conduct a respectful campaign while others around him are going into meltdowns. He is trying to focus on issues and stay focused in this very negative and destructive environment. We need someone who is capable of this. We need to move away from hateful, arrogant forms of discourse. It certainly now appears that Obama is the most likely candidate to move us in that direction. We have many serious problems now to take care of and if we don't cooperate more, it isn't going to happen. posted 05/16/2008 at 20:48:42

Monique,

First the policies between Clinton and Obama are extremely similar. Secondly, Erica's article is discussing the unimportance of liking someone to the point that that is the reason you vote for them. So, you are saying you don't like Obama. A more important point is which of these two candidates is more likely to get elected. Clinton will be better off, as will the rest of us, if Obama defeats McCain. According to polls now, Obama has a better chance of winning. Thirdly, Obama is quite intelligent, not that Clinton isn't. He actually is discussing ideas which are unique. He has put a lot of thought into how to address the huge issues which await the next president. It isn't that he doesn't have ideas. The press has had no interest in finding out what they are. posted 05/16/2008 at 20:21:18

Congress: Money for War, But No Money for the Troops?

usapatriot, This is wrong thinking. The article mentions "Blue Dog Democrats," and you notice they are from Tennessee and Florida. They are not mainstream Democrats and don't vote the same. I recommend that you check the voting records and you will find that mainstream Dems vote consistently opposite of Repubs, especially on these social programs. It is important to get this point, because if people don't, then they don't vote for the people that are trying to help out. posted 05/13/2008 at 17:11:30

MeO8 - Maybe you are incapable of knowing when someone has different ideas. Maybe you just would like to maintain your current world view which is perhaps justifiably negative, but that shouldn't keep people from attempting to bring about something more positive in the world. posted 05/04/2008 at 20:06:49
Right, give the ignorant people who like to believe this manure what they want. Problem is while they are buying it, they aren't getting information that helps them make choices which would help their lives and help this country progress. Instead, they are supporting the powerful manipulators of our country who only look out for their own interests. posted 05/04/2008 at 19:55:36

Interesting that you would think that a Navy Commander would not support the military. You also may not recall, but Carter had to deal with a Repub led congress. Carter allowed Kissinger to consult on foreign policy. Kissinger recommended that the Shah be allowed to enter this country for Cancer treatment. Guess what caused the hostages to be taken. The hostages were released when Iranian assets were unfrozen from the big banks. It was freezing the assets which solidified the retaining of the hostages. These errors were made with bipartisan support. It was convenient to Blame Carter. posted 05/01/2008 at 21:29:55

America May Owe Reverend Wright a Debt of Gratitude

Unfortunately, we think people need to be denounced if we don't agree with their opinions. Rev. Wright is still an American and he can think and say what he wants. Senator Obama knows and understands that. He has been forced to say that he rejects Wright's opinion, because much ot the American population cannot understand the position Wright takes. The easy way out is to reject and denounce, but it doesn't lead to understanding. Understanding is difficult and therefore, not likely to happen. African Americans have been pushed into a corner, no matter what people would like to think. Their alternatives for success have been limited. What Wright and Sen. Obama had in common was their determination to create more alternatives for African Americans. They may disagree on how to conduct discourse, but not on the goal of trying to decrease poverty, crime and despair within our culture that impacts on a large segment of the black community. posted 04/30/2008 at 13:50:00

Probing a Political Paradox: Why the Discredited Right Still Sets the Agenda and Dominates the Debate

You are speaking about the Walter Reed under the Bush Admin. It hasn't always been like that. I worked for the VA twice and they have done some very good work and helpful things during better administrations. We just need to stop electing idiots and probably if things are working well, even presidents and congress should not be allowed to make changes. posted 04/30/2008 at 00:06:42
I think you missed the point Grass. Unfortunately, you are never going to be wealthy enough to pay for everyone's healthcare that is currently going without. The only way that happens is when everyone chips in, just as they do with insurance, except the government can use it all for healthcare, not for profit, not for stockholders, not for CEO salaries, not for high cost drug ads on TV, etc. So, good that you help orphans, but there are more people that need help. I had a bad accident 1 1/2 years ago. Even though I have insurance, it didn' t pay for everything. I will be paying off the bill for another couple of years. In England, I would have walked from the hospital owing nothing. Which sounds better to you? Fortunately after 4 months, I was able to go back to work, but then my wife gets laid off for three months. Insurance loss, income loss. We have a system that makes life very difficult for the most independent people with good work ethics. Is that what we really want to do? posted 04/30/2008 at 00:04:06
A recent documentary which examined Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Thailand, and the U S, discovered that these countries are quite happy with their health care and wouldn't even think of trading theirs for the screwed up American approach. The reason the E R is used so much is that people don't have insurance and no other way to get care, so the E R is used instead. That is a failure in our system. In addition, our administrative costs run up to three times more than in other countries with varying kinds of broadly based healthcare approaches. When drug companies, hospitals, insurance companies, managed care companies, etc. have to make a profit, consumers have to pay extra. We have more costs just from trying to deal with the complexities of doing business with so many different providers. It practically makes it impossible to figure out who pays for what and more time and money is wasted with accounting and legal rangling. A huge number of people just forego getting help, because it is too difficult and too expensive. No one in their right mind, looking at our system would say, boy, that is what I want! Apparently, you are not old enough to have used the healthcare system enough to know what a disaster it is. posted 04/29/2008 at 23:51:20
Apparently, first you don't seem to realize that most democrats by far are not movie stars. Second, many stars are helping to promote energy efficiency; Willy Nelson with bio-diesel, Leo DiCapprio, Ed Begley,Susan Sarandon, Carmen Diaz, Brad Pitt (New Orleans housing development), Barbara Streisand, and there are many more. Nowadays, there are Repub stars as well, which I am sure you realize. Notice how you pick one thing about Gore and try to make a case of it. He has traveled on public airlines all over the world to bring information about global warming. What have you done to reduce pollution? If nothing, then we can talk about your hypocrisy first. It appears that you are most interested in trying to pull off being right instead of trying to be open to learning what is reality. posted 04/29/2008 at 23:40:15
No misread Arianna. A huge number of Americans have bought the manure that has been coming out of MSM. The MSM seems to delight in distraction away from important issues and in getting us to buy into the controversies they manufacture so they can focus on that until they come up with the next distraction. Grasshopper exemplifies someone who has ideolodged himself. Notice frequent usage of the now MSM's legitimized perjorative of "liberal" found in grasshoppers rhetoric. Notice the tired sentiment of how the "government" is inefficient. Look who controlled the government for the past eight years, Repubs manipulated by the lobbyists. If they screw up, just run another public relations ad. Look at how much money is now being spent on promoting the archaic coal industry, masked with references to solar/wind. We will get to pay for these ads, just like we are paying for the gasoline now and still have few fuel efficient cars. Notice how grasshopper refers to jets and 10Ksf homes. Here, clearly, he is mostly talking Republicans. Most of us on the other side definitely don't have jets and dream of even 2K. High taxes refer only to middle and lower classes. We are the ones who are still paying that with Repub dominated government. The rich get richer and pay less. So, grasshopper, you might be helped by starting to pay attention to what "is" going on instead of sucking in multimillionaire Limbaugh, and O'Reilly and Hannity, Limbaugh wannabees. posted 04/29/2008 at 14:59:36

The Moment for Change

Interesting that the MSM was quite content to go with the snipets of Rev. Wright's comments, aired over and over and never bothered to interview Rev. Wright. Finally, on Bill Moyers Journal, things are made clear. As I suspected, Sen. Obama went to that church to gain access into the community that he wanted to help. This church is as much of a social service agency as it is a church. The church has been helping poor blacks, elderly and hungry for many years and it has attempted to offer blacks an alternative to a life of crime and drugs. What a terrible, terroristic thing to do, right? Further, Wright was quoting a white commentator in the snipet and the snipet was attributed to him. Thirdly, the quote refers to the episodes of injustice which are quite well known of in this country and as a pastor, the Reverend was pointing out that the bottom line of our allegiance should be to Christianity, not to the government. The government, in his eyes, is not always on the side of right and as a Christian, he wants people to hold the government accountable for its actions. Again, does this sound terroristic? In sum, he wants to help people make better choices and have better choices to make. He has not taken to the streets with guns, rather he has sought to help bring street people into the church. Sounds like someone we should be respecting and helping to me. posted 04/27/2008 at 01:28:24

Clinton: Obama Blaming Voters For His Own Failures

It is sad to see someone that you have admired for many years and defended while others of different persuasions attacked her, now succumb to the same tactics of those bitter and desperate neo-cons who want to take over the world. It might look like she has begun working to tear the democratic party apart, so that the neo-cons can have four more years to run this country into the ground. I think it is time for the democratic party to pull the plug on her or suffer the consequences. Time is wasting. posted 04/14/2008 at 15:45:58

McCain More Conservative Than His Image

Too bad you get stuck on left wing, right wing nonsense. The reality is that McCain has been selected by Bush himself to continue the Bush agenda, which is the oil companies and weapons building companies and big banks, and Bush's wealthy friends who will pay him well for his work. Obama is the real uniter. Did you watch his interview last night? Did you notice that the religious conservatives were applauding him? They seem to understand what he is saying and feeling about things, while you on the other hand are eating up media suckers like they were going out of style. posted 04/14/2008 at 15:29:13
It wasn't Huff Post who got Bush's endorsement. It wasn't Huff Post who hired his big corporation lobbyists to run his campaign, getting all of the oil and weapons money needed to do so. Do you think Bush would endorse someone who wasn't going to continue his misguided ways? posted 04/14/2008 at 15:23:36

Obama: No Need For Foreign Policy Help From V.P.

Bush is a reactor and this is dangerous and has proven to be very destructive. I see Sen. O as someone who is capable of considering things adequately and making the best decision that is possible to make. It doesn't have to come from God, the neocons, the left, the right, the bankers, the oil and energy corporations, the pharmaceutical companies and Bush's usual suspects. I think this article is narrow and unfortunate. I would ask that the writer continue to look at this man and really work on getting a bigger, more objective picture and I would hope voters will do the same, because some of us saw what Bush would do to this country and the others who voted for him didn't listen and we got a horrible, tragic mess which threatens the world and our own democracy. We most assuredly don't need another four years and if we get another four years of Bushdom, I think America will fall further into irrelevancy. posted 04/08/2008 at 14:35:44
On Olberman, we have been seeing the name McBush. I think this is so wise. Sucking up to Bush has made it possible for McCain to be the nominee. That is very worrisome, indeed. Bush would not be supporting anyone who does not intend to continue his (failed) policies. So, we are left with Senator Clinton and Senator Obama, whether they are perfect in everyway or not. I imagine they are not perfect, but who is? In watching them, I find myself liking Senator Obama more. It looks to me like he is a very considerate person and we already know he is a deep thinker. I know Americans prefer someone likable over someone who is smart. Sen. O is both. I think we need to review the concept of cocky vs someone who feels confident in their ability to be objective and make appropriate decisions. The difference between Bush and Sen. O is that one believes he gets his information from God and the neocons and therefore, it is infallible, vs. Obama, who listens to many people and considers things from all angles, which gives him a much bigger picture. A much bigger picture is what has been lacking in the current administration. posted 04/08/2008 at 14:35:25
