I agree with you. Towards the end of the clip...EH asked Whoopie how we get past the issues so that there is no longer "two different worlds" and Whoopies answer was basically something to the effect of "talk it out and find a common ground, acknowledge why the word is used and move forward." I think that was what EH was trying to do but she was getting shot down for it. I think that what Whoope and Sharri wanted was for EH to say "yes, it is wrong for white people to say it but it is ok for black people to say it and they should continue to say it all they want". doesn't this just perpetuate the "different worlds" that Whoopie was lamenting over? Couldn't it be said that Whoopie is unable or unwilling to extend herself beyond her own experience?

I think a lot of this tension will eventually correct itself "generationally". I am a 36 years old so I missed the civil rights movement and I didn't even know what "jim Crow" was until I looked it up. All that I have ever known in life is that people of all races are my equal. I have always shared my classrooms, neighborhoods and workplaces with people of all races. That is normal for me as it is for most young people.

Whoopie means well but I think she is out of touch-just like Jessie Jackson is out of touch. Maybe it is because they remember the days of "Jim Crow". But there are already two generations of Americans who are past that. Maybe that explains the complacency over the "n" word being used so prominently in our pop culture? It is a vile word but for most mainstream America it is just the norm. You can't say that it is ok for some to use it and others not to.

So who am I to say? I have to say that felt for Elizabeth here (yikes!). She was sincere. Whoopie could have been a bit more patient with her and when Elizabeth asked her how we get past this, she couldn't come up with a very compelling answer. posted 07/17/2008 at 23:03:50

And as much as it pains me, I have to agree with Elizabeth on this....if we are ever going to stop living in different worlds we need to stop using that vile and offensive word.
