Biofuel Future Threatened By Severe Weather

Great post. Sugar based ethanol works well too. Way better than corn, which you have to make into sugar first, and I don't care how sweet the corn is, it don't have more sugar than sugar. Hemp is a no brainer and should immediately be legalized. Cotton clothes for which it was scacrificed is no longer the product it once was in an energy starved world. We are going to want clothes that last 6 times longer i.e made from hemp. And while you're at it legalize marijuama. We're all gonna need to be high with the storm headed our way. posted 07/01/2008 at 15:32:32

Clean Energy Cost Comparisons Looking Better and Better

WRONG! The time for that was ten years ago. I think back when Tony Soprano was asked by the hapless sporting goods store owner when his store was being cleaned out for debts he owed the mobster. "What's the end game here?" he asked. "It's a bustout. Chapter 11. Bankruptcy." The store owner started crying. I was watching "Till Debt do us Part" or something like that about America's addiction to credit and spending and one of the economists asks a Congresman "What's the end game here?" talking about America's ballooning deficits. He just smiled at her. posted 06/29/2008 at 12:58:11

The Time For Fed Action Is Now

Oh Please. Do you really think dorky Bernanke can do anything. Inflation is about one thing and one thing only. The basic building blocks of your society just got mroe expensive and there is nothing you can do about it. Energy. It costs alot more, a whole lot more to find and produce and refine oil today, natural gas very soon, and coal about a year from now. So everything you do just got more expensive. Period. What can we do ? Conserve. Cut back. Sounds positively anti-American. Well consider this. Maybe American ain't so great any more. If it ever was. The Obama Problem

The change we need. Only a liberal could make that statement so assuredly. George W Bush and Dick Cheney had the misfortune of being in office when peak oil became a reality. They went to war to secure the energy resources for this country's future. Like it or not, they DID something. I can't stand either one. But my hat's off to them for taking action. The Audacity of Dope

As was famously stated in of all things an Oliver Stone movie "The organizing principle of society is war. The power of the state over it's people resides in it's war powers." Consequently you cannot have such quaint ideas as turn the other cheek and the meek balh blah blah and be able to organize a bunch of nazis at heart. They have to be able to tell you what to do. How you are doing it wrong. What a fool you are for not being like us. You are going to hell for this or for that. No matter they can't explain why or where ever did they get the notion they were the judge. They just say it, and say it louder if you object, and then hit you or send the cops after you when you fight back. May the whole lot of them find that lowest rung in hell that Dante reserved for the traitors. posted 06/29/2008 at 14:12:57

Why McCain's "Drill Here, Drill Now" Proposal Fails the Supply/Demand Reality Check

Exactly. That in essence is what went wrong with this country. Dissent was turned into treason. Anyone who has ever worked in a big company knows what I am talking about. It is what they say it is, not what it is. Take that up to a national level and you have what you have. Politics has become an alternate reality. Thru the looking glass. Alice in Wonderland. And when the whole rotten lot of it comes crashing down, nary a tear will be shed for this country the world over. There will be rejoicing in the streets. America,The Great Babylon, has fallen. The reason they are not drilling where they are not drilling is that prospects are dim there. DUH. The world is rapidly running out of cheap easy to get oil and that will cause a fundamental revaluation of the entire world. Hold on to your hats. posted 06/26/2008 at 17:19:47

This is life and death. If you want to drive around in a Escalade , you pay 4 times what the guy driving a Vespa scooter. $16 a gallon vs $4. Oil production was on an undulating plateau for the US between 1969 and 1971. No matter what we did we could not get it any higher than 11 million bpd. Then it started to drop and has been ever since except after Prudhoe Bay. In 2004 the world began an undulating plateau that it is stil on now at about 85 million bpd. It will soon start to drop. If you were an investor and knew that would you have invested in oil knowing full well that demand is exploding. Don't blame the speculator. Why Do Republicans Like Fossil Fuels and Not Care That Much for the Environment?

I am not sure you understand the science behind alot of this. Gas fired turbines, especially combined cycle (which uses the heat from a gas fired turbine to drive a steam turbine) has efficiencies approaching 60%. Compare that with a coal fired plant, about 26%and a car engine , about 18%, and you have significant improvement in efficiency. Also since coal is CH, oil is CH2, and nat gas is CH4, you also get 4 hydrogen atoms for every molecule of gas burned, which is where the energy is. So you are getting alot more energy for every C atom released to go mate with an O2 when using nat gas, a lot more. Mat Simmons and Boone Pickens both want nat gas as transport fuels, but this is based on the premise of continuing use of the internal combustion engine, which is in my opinion a flawed premise. Electric cars is the only way to go. Use sugar based ethanol and biodeisel to bridge gap and create the new infratructure. posted 06/20/2008 at 16:11:45

The problem is enormous and ominous. Cheap energy is a thing of the past and the world has grown and is still growing as if it is not. When you have to drill 5 miles down and in the ocean, you have to ask yourself, is this madness. And at what point is it madness. The same thing happened to the whaling industry and it is no concidence that the largest oil fields are called "whales". They had to go out further, stay out longer, to find fewer and fewer whales at rapidly diminsishing profits despite incredibly high prices. This is known as a death spiral...down the tubes. Couple this with increasing temperatures and rising seas and a population almost entirely near the sea, and you have a recipe for the end of the world. Intervention for America's Oil Addicts

America has scoured the world to punch ever deeper and more expensive veins to feed it's carnivorous apetite for fossil fuels. We have set to boiling rocks and sand with ever more precious and clean natural gas to create synthetic oil. Kind of like taking caviar and making fake crab meat. We have invaded another soverign nation under false pretenses to secure some more black crack. What do they say about addicts, they have to hot rock bottom. Boy I sure do wonder what that will look like here. posted 06/10/2008 at 11:15:21

Saudi Arabia To Hold Meeting On Soaring Oil Prices

Saudi Arabia is concerned about high oil prices. They are having a meeting to discuss it. Oh bless their hearts. This Administration's Singular Achievement: Making the World Safe For Gluttonous Oil Profits On the Backs of American and World Consumers

Thank you. It takes 10 years to bring a field online. The trillions of dollars flowing into the commodity markets are evenly balanced. As hard as it might be for you to believe, there are still people out there that think the price of oil is too high and are willing to put their money where their mouth is. They are going short. The market decides who is right and your conspiracy theories aside, aren't you a ittle old to still beleive in the boogeyman. I mean unless you are a Republican. When America turned it's back on the loathsome poilicies of Jimmy Carter, such as conservation , and were hoodwinked into thinking an average B-rated actor form Hollywood with below average intelligence but a nice smile and cheery demeanor could signal an end to America's energy probelem, we condemed our children to a tragic day of reckoining. The Good News About $200 Oil...I Hope...

I think the Bejing Olympics and a Gulf hurricane will be the final nail in the coffin. The world must contract for the first time in my memory and it's not going to feel good. Sugar based ethanol and soybean based biodiesel are 2 stop gap measures that will see us thru. 4 day work weeks and virtual office for several employees a week are conservation measures which could help. This is what we need to be talking about, not finger pointing and raging against the machine. posted 06/09/2008 at 17:59:49

What's Going On in the Oil Market?

You need to get your facts straight. Oil inventories are not at a 15 year high. It is comments like these that promulgate your myth that speculators are too blame, which they are most certainly not. Companies have a fiduciary responsibility to shareholders to maximize profits and as such thet are buying oil like crazy becasue THEY think oil is cheap now. Do you really think a few speculators can compete with tthe likes of Exxon, Southwest, and soverign wealth funds. Speculators are like fleas on a dog. The dog is world companies hedging against higher fuel costs. Get your facts straight. posted 06/09/2008 at 14:32:10
It is difficult to have a bubble in a deliverable and consumable commodity. Evrey day between 85 and 86 million barrels of oil are consumed. Every day. Without exception. Contrast that with gold where almost none of it is consumed. Ever. So if there was a speculative bubble, you would see hoarding, short pouring, blending things like that. While many would argue there are 15 ships full of millions of barrels of oil off the coast of Iran, I would argue let's stick to provable facts. Demand is a voracious monster that must be curbed before prices will fall. So America tighten your belts. Use less. And if you really want to find the boogeyman, don't look under the bed. Look on the bed. posted 06/09/2008 at 12:43:47

Why We Hate

Hate is a primordial source of energy, and it is hardwired into our DNA . It has also been conditioned into us. So hate is a tough nut to crack. Stick to dieting or no-porn days. It is the curiously feminine desire to make everything we see better that is at the root of much of our misery and we should strive to kill that at every turn, not the things that make us human. Diversity is unnatural, but healthy. So try to get along but if you but heads so what, don't feel too bad about it. It's natural. posted 06/06/2008 at 18:08:41

Oil Crisis: Your Primer on the Great "Peak Oil" v "Speculators" Debate

I think you are ignoring a minor detail. It's their oil. Not to put too fine a point on it, but what would you do if it were yours. The problem with people like you is you think "why is our oil under their sand?" As far as speculation goes, if it's so bad, why is it still around? Speculators provide a very valuable service in a free market. They provide liquidity for hedging since there always needs to be short to go with a long. And on the personal side, capital letters are unneccesary to make your point and frankly I find them rather ugly when used excessively. posted 06/10/2008 at 16:00:48
You are ignoring the demand side of this equation. posted 06/08/2008 at 13:01:03
Most of it is wasted. Do you really need 500 horses under your hood. Do you really need your house 72 degrees, at all times. Do you really need steak and potatoes. Do you really need 20 suits. No America, they don't hate becasue of our freedom, they hate us becasue of our greed. posted 06/08/2008 at 12:41:09
Another way of looking at that is that a barrel of oil contains the equivalent of 25,000 man hours of work. That is 12 and 1/2 men working for you all year full time. The average American uses roughly 20 barrels a year. That is 250 men working for you full time every year, energy slaves. Washing your clothes, doing your dishes, pulling your plow, driving your car, flying you to grandma or your mistress, lighting your stadiums etc etc etc. So even if you pay the guy $1.00 and hour , that's $500,000 of work you get every year. I agree with KTM to a point, he neglects the cost of the infrastructure that delivers it to you which is considerable, as well as the costs of the machines that use it, again considerable. But we are somewhere in between the 2. Since every government in the world subsidizes energy (which is why gas costs $10 bucks in Holland and .21 cents in Venezeula) it is unknowbale what the intrinsic value of a barrel of oil is. But it's a lot. posted 06/07/2008 at 18:23:30
That is of yet unconfirmed but we'll see. This notion that we have plenty of oil is proof positive what a magnificent job of propaganda has been worked on the American people. It's like global warming or climate change. People's beliefs resist change, but more importantly their beliefs demand expression. To the guy who believes the Saudi's are sitting a on big creamy nougat of oil, he's going to go out and buy a big one ton F-350 to show that he is right. How's that working for you now big guy? I have always maintained that even when Florida is underwater, the Republicans will be screaming from their rowboats "It's a natural cycle...it wasn't us." Splish splash. Who cares? posted 06/06/2008 at 16:36:21
President Trump. What a joke. Writing a book on how to get rich when he was born that way. Kinda like Jesus writing a book about how to get holy. Please stop seriously quoting that man. The Collapse of the Middle Class, Letters from Vermont and America

The average American has no equity in their home. He has no equity in his car. He has no savings account. The average American has maxed out his credit cards. He has not gotten a raise in years and has been told be thankful you still have a job. The average American's purchasing power is 1/2 what it was a few years ago. In short the average American is screwed. AND FOR WHAT? This is the American Dream. Baloney. The American Nightmare more like it. And it happened so fast and so under the radar. We didn't see it coming and it was upon us. Now it just hurts. And it is only beginning. posted 06/06/2008 at 12:18:08

Oil's Largest One-Day Gain On Record: Thank You, Mr. Bernanke

KTM is right. When the Soviet Union collapsed, the social compact that existed between it's citizens and it's govrnment prevented a humanitarian disaster. Socialism I know. But what happens when capitalism fails? In Moscow a housing project that supports 10,000 people is not uncommon. We have 5,000 McMansions with 2 people in each. Get the picture. posted 06/07/2008 at 18:58:03
While Memorial Day was Peak Oil's coming out party, the China Olympics and a Gulf hurricane will put the exclamation point on it. That is why speculators are rushing in. They see the big pop coming. Then the big poop. Speculators do not create a trend, they amplify it. Think of speculators like a flea on a dog. The dog is walking happily along, tail wagging, head up, eyes bright. Then in an instant he is brought to his knees, and starts scratching violently. You would think that flea was huge, with the jaws and teeth of a piranha. But he's not, he's just a little flea, maybe the size of a tiny buggar. But he brought a 150 lb dog to a dead stop, and that dog gave him his full , undivivded attention. That is a speculator. We are the canaries in the coal mine, so thank us don't condemn us. posted 06/07/2008 at 18:41:48

Home Foreclosures Set A Record

Why is there no national dialogue to reduce consumption of petrol? Why? Finger pointing , petulant , complaining Americans is not a pretty sight. Grown a pair. Insert a spine. Pull up the old boots. We have lived extravagantly for so long now, everyone has forgotten things can get tough. Home prices WERE a speculative bubble fueled by cheap energy. You drove till you qualified as they say, and then while you were there you built as many square feet as possible. McMansions. Now you can't afford the drive to work (if you still have a job) and soon you won't afford to heat and cool all those empty rooms. But oil is NOT a speculative bubble. Oil is energy. Energy is power. Energy creates wealth. And now it's getting scarce. Put those 2 together and what do you have. A contratcing America. There's no way around it. It's a brave new world.
