I hope that she decided to leave because she wanted to be involved in a more "inclusive ministry." Things like this should have nothing to do with money and stature. As a black man, I was never more embarassed than the day of the O.J. verdict. In Los Angeles, the news stations went to First A.M.E. church, the mecca, pastored by Cecil "Chip" Murray.
When the verdict was read, the minister and everyone in the church jumped up and down as if they were at a party. I just melted into temporary dispair. This is the same church that many white celebrities donated lots of money to, in an effort to help rebuild L.A. after the riots, resulting from the police officers that bear Rodney King, being found not guilty.
I could never figure how "christians" could act this way when two people had been murdered by Simpson, or someone else.
I believe in God, but have absolutely no use for religion. I have seen very few churches where the greater good is for the people and not the minister. Obama's 'Sister Souljah Moment'

Rep. Clybourne said it best this morning. "I am of the old-guard of the civil rights movement, and some of us have a hard time passing the torch, be it jealousy, or ego." I am black and have problem condemning Wright's sermons, snippets, out of text, or what-the-fuck-ever.
A great amount of progress has been made by my people, and there is still a ways to go. However, the mission is not served well by black segregationist like Wright, Sharpton, Jackson and the like. While there are some valid rights issues, way to many are manufactured, thereby diluting the importance of the legitimate issues.
There are too many issues we face, than to have "leaders" having us angry at the drop of a hat: AIDS amongst black women is happening faster to them than any other group; 50% plus dropout rate; 37 percent prison population; gang murders in innercities nation (Chicago has a serious epidemic now);
crack, alcohol, blood pressure, diabetes, conspicuous consumption, and on and on.

I am black and feel comfortable calling the egomaniac Wright, a black segregationist. While he says he preach's a message of hope, it's hard to hope while one is angry. As a child I watching on tv from L.A., as my people were wet with hoses, bitten by dogs, and many other inhumane indignities. I was mad as hell and Dr. King's message became old.
I admired to black muslims, the panthers, and some white radical organizations, that didn't believe in sitting there and just taking shit anymore. Then I saw those organizations(and their leaders) disintegrate, very often from not having a constructive outlet for that anger.
I realized that Dr. King had it mostly right, the need is to coalesce with others. That's the only way to make change. When Wright distinguished between the two maching bands today, he said he was displaying how we are different, but can co-exist. But what he actually was doing is suggesting that Florida A & M's marching band was far superior to U. of Michigan.

As I look at the murder epidemic going on in Chicago, and across this country, involving young black men, the AIDS epidemic amongst our women, the 37 percent prison population and on and on. A Defense Of Jeremiah Wright

As a black liberal, I am sick of ministers like Wright, Jackson and Sharpton. With the black prisoner popoulation being 32% of the total, yet only 7% of the American population, we need encouragement, not anger.
Notwithstanding the residual affects of racism, and instance where it can occur, we need strength and energy to move forward and upward. Way too many ministers preach in an effort the keep their minions looking to them for guidance, which is often narrow-minded.
