Is Obama Man Enough To Be a Feminist Too?

"Like others (including Erica Jong, under attack on this page right now for referring to Obama as a boy) I think Obama looks boyish. And by that I mean young - not "bwah!" With his infectious grin and stick-out ears, he looks like a kid, and that's a good thing and a bad thing. I like that he's my age, he's new and fresh and he's going to negotiate with our enemies (yes! Long overdue!), say things the old fogeys would never say, and try new ways of doing. "

I'm really getting tired of the constant attempts to infantalize Obama by the white feminist establishment.

They are constantly trying to paint him as either an inexperienced and immature child or they are accusing him of being "uppity" and daring to be "elite". That's when they aren't condescendingly giving him his props for being a phenominal speaker- a gift they deem empty and meaningless- like a jazz musician who has rhythm but isn't ready for grown-up responsibilities.

You want "experience"? I'll give you experience. Obama just beat the Clinton machine- how's that for "experience"?

These coded arguments didn't work in the primary and they need to be buried now. posted 05/17/2008 at 13:31:35

Superdelegates Continue To Flow To Obama

That statement is so classist and divisive.

The people of West Virginia are not backward- they lack information because they do not have access to cable and the internet nothing more- part of it is economic and part of it is geographical.

Getting both cable television and the internet to rural areas is a big issue.

Many people in West Virginia have only seen Barack Obama on network television- they haven't even heard one complete speech and only a few debates were even on network TV.

I see it this way- the people of West Virginia have an excuse why they voted Clinton- the people where I live- New York City- do not and yet they did and they are both over-educated and wealthy. What's their excuse?

We don't need to buy into Clinton's classism and racism.

If Americans actually read anything other than blogs, they would know that the vast majority of memoirs are self-aggrandizing, egocentric and not to be trusted.

Some of them are notorious- people claim to be friends with people they barely know or never met, they claim to be straight when they aren't, they claim to have been invited to the Tate house the night of the Manson massacre but something told them not to, it goes on and on.

You want the ultimate dubious memoir? Check out "I Was a White Slave in Harlem" by Margo Howard-Howard.

An autobiography is supposedly factual, a memoir is a memory- distorted and never intended to be taken as absolute fact.

I also understand where much of Rev. Wright's anger (or maybe passion is the better word) comes from.

I've also seen several of Wright's sermons in their entirity and know that his remarks were taken out of context.

But after seeing him today- and I thought he was delightful- I am in total agreement with Barack Obama.

Wright is an inspiring man and you love him like you do a crazy uncle. He is utterly charming, funny, quick witted and honest as he sees it.

But I also think it's very clear that Obama (who's political ideals were formed years before he even met Wright) and he have very different ideas on politics and where this country is going.

I think Hillary is a right-wing hawk. This has nothing to do with her being a woman but her apologists will tell you "when you are a woman running for president you have to be as tough as the guys".

We just heard Phil Donahue says something to that effect on Bill Maher Friday.

This frightens me just as much as Clinton herself- a segment of the self-loathing liberals willing to rationalize her genocidal tendencies in the name of girl power.

The sad reality that the Steinem circle hasn't found out yet is that women aren't morally superior to men. Women leaders have made just as many errors as men have- look at Thatcher alone!

The reason why women leaders are like male leaders is something that should be apparent to this generation of older identity feminists but isn't- it's because women and men are equal. posted 04/27/2008 at 16:42:26
