John McCain Trades Straight Talk for Unadulterated Fantasy

I believe you're just engaging in a knee-jerk reaction caused by the sight of the name McCain. A political philosophy based on "Republicans suck" may satisfy you emotionally, but it's not going to win the election. Of course Democrats would rather be right than successful.

Did you read the piece? McCain has basically promised world peace and a solution to all domestic problems. Obama can't seem to set his sights any higher than the usual Democratic policy-wonkery and no real resolution of anything (just like Clinton and Carter). Whose vision do you think is more appealing? posted 05/17/2008 at 22:08:09
I always knew McCain was smart, but now I realize he's brilliant. Isn't he telling people exactly what they want to hear? How is this different from what Ronald Reagan did -- and he was elected by a landslide. Never mind that he never actually delivered on any of his promises.

Please keep in mind the words of H.L. Mencken: Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.

Meanwhile, Obama's "audacity of hope" sounds like pretty lukewarm stuff. posted 05/16/2008 at 16:16:20

The Bipartisanship Scam

Umm, are we living in the same universe? I live in the one where the Democrats don't even have a majority in the Senate. And it takes at least 60 votes to do anything meaningful. Not to mention that most of the laws you mention were passed in the last Congress, where the Democratics had an even smaller minority. What doesn't scream bipartisanship about that? Truth Alert: McCain's Freudian Slip is Showing (and Very Telling)

You'd think he'd be distancing himself from Bush, now that he has the nomination sewed up. I thought that's what he was doing when he made his remarks about Katrina, but apparently not. Or does he think people want more of the same for the next 8 years? posted 05/09/2008 at 23:47:02

... does this have ANYTHING to do with my post? posted 05/06/2008 at 02:26:26
Presidential elections aren't about issues, they're about personality. And McCain still has a personality that's very appealing to Americans. After 8 years of a president who comes across like an immature fratboy with a thin veneer of Texas redneck, what could be more soothing than "grandpa" (as even Arianna calls him)?

Who cares if he gets Sunni and Shia mixed up? So do most voters, and anyway that's what national security advisers and secretaries of State are for -- the small stuff. We all know older guys have memory lapses. Or do you think maybe Ronald Reagan wasn't a hit at the box office -- oops, I mean voting booth. posted 05/05/2008 at 23:41:40

The Specter of 1988

Did Michael Dukakis really lose because he looked dumb with his head sticking out of a tank? Shouldn't be that hard to find out -- just ask people if that's why they voted for Bush (I). Probably a bit late at this point.

It's just easier for the media to deal with these superficial symbols than with the often complicated reality on the ground. What happens if there's more than one reason why people vote for or against a candidate?

Which is not to say that "issues" determine presidential elections either. Believe it or not, I think it often boils down to likability. Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton -- very likeable. Dubya -- more likeable than Al Gore in 2000. What does it say about John Kerry that he couldn't even appear more likeable in 2004?

And this year -- one guess. "Do you, John McCain, promise to uphold and defend the Constitution..." Get ready for it. posted 05/05/2008 at 18:50:07

"American Idol" Elimination: Sobbing Songstress Sent Home

Thank God Brooke was finally put out of her misery. I'm trying to remember if she EVER gave a performance that I really liked. Maybe in the audition. She has a small vocal range, no breath control, and an almost unbelievably limited comfort zone for her repertoire. "She's great when she's behind the piano" -- yeah, so was Liberace.

But this has been a really lame season anyway, I can hardly believe I'm still watching. I'm so tired of these "theme shows" I could scream. Let them do what they do best already! posted 05/01/2008 at 21:30:58

Those who live by the Oprah shall die by the Oprah. They thought she was just great when she was praising his book to the skies.

But there is a valid point here. There's definitely a double standard when it comes to memoirs. Celebrities can get away with telling all the lies they want in their books, while a writer like Frey can have his whole life pretty much ruined.

There's an easy solution for publishers and authors, just use the disclaimer Shelley Winters did in her autobiography. It was something like, "Some of this is my life just as it happened, and some of it is the way I wish it had happened." posted 04/30/2008 at 13:56:02

Probing a Political Paradox: Why the Discredited Right Still Sets the Agenda and Dominates the Debate

I'm not sure President McCain will be agreeing that the right wing era is over. Can't wait to see who his first Supreme Court nomination will be...

As for Nixon, does anybody remember that one of McGovern's ideas was to give every household $1000 to relieve the recession? Sound familiar? And he got really slammed for that radical notion. posted 04/29/2008 at 22:38:18
This is the kind of thinking that gave us Ronald Reagan in the first place. Obviously the liberal point of view is the right one, these people on the Right must be crazy or evil if they don't agree with me, therefore I don't have to take them seriously, blah blah blah.

Unfortunately in a democracy you can't just proclaim your correctness and march to the White House, you actually have to convince people you're right.

28% still support Bush? That sounds like a pretty big voting block to me. The Democrats would kill to have a solid base like that, instead of the usual miscellaneous (mis)alliance of special interest groups.

Democratic candidates are so desperate to appeal to the center, they don't know what they stand for anymore. Are we for or against free trade this month? Universal healthcare or some weird variation on the same old crazy quilt? Welfare is good -- no wait, it's bad. Same thing with affirmative action. Pull out of Iraq? Sure -- but only after Goal X, Y, or Z (none of which are achievable) has been achieved.

And over the whole thing looms one name that causes able-bodied Democrats to wake up screaming at 3 a.m. and piss their pajamas -- McGovern. His lopsided defeat (to Nixon!) set the left in this country back 40 or 50 years.

Too bad the Democrats didn't learn the right lessons from it. posted 04/28/2008 at 17:38:55

Closing the Message Gap on Iraq: A Responsible Plan to End the War

As for the oil issue -- the vast majority of Iraqi oil is currently being smuggled out on the black market. If oil was our primary concern, don't you think we would have dispatched a few battalions of soldiers to make sure that didn't happen?

As for "declaring victory" -- yes, I thought of that too, when Bush said "mission accomplished." Good going, Dubya, now get the heck out of there! But as stupid as our Prez is, even he realized that that was a no-win proposition for the US. The civil war was going to happen in any case, but as long as we have 140K soldiers there, we can claim that we're doing the best we can. At least no future historian will have any problems illustrating the principle of unintended consequences... posted 04/01/2008 at 17:27:44
Gosh, I would have thought this was an easy one. American voters don't want to "end" wars -- they want to "win" them. They simply do not want to hear that some wars can't be won. Find a way to fix it! We don't care how long we stay there, as long as we don't have to leave with our tails between our legs.

Remember Vietnam? How else can you explain why we stayed there so many years after it was obvious that the outcome was going to be disastrous?

So no, the issue isn't "give us a plan for getting out of Iraq." It's "make us feel better about what's going on there, even if you have to lie." Who can do that better than President McCain? posted 03/31/2008 at 17:03:31

John McCain, Iraq, and the Eyewitness Fallacy

Well, of course they only visit the Green Zone -- the rest of the country is too dangerous for Americans! Shouldn't that tell you something right there, Hillary, Joe, John, etc.?

And now even the Green Zone is under attack again -- not to mention Basra, formerly lauded as a "success story."

What's depressing is the extent to which politicians and journalists are all locked into the same mindset about this "war". It's not a war -- who is the enemy? It's not an occupation -- we're not running the country. So what is it, besides a mess? A "police action" maybe -- but then who are the criminals? posted 03/27/2008 at 14:41:23
