Obama's Struggle With Typical Liberal Hypocrisy

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, all men are created equal."

". . .judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

Mr. Ridley's right. Some of us don't like it but it's true, and it's largely a compliment not an insult to us.

What he's saying is Republicans simply ignore differences (be they gender, ethnic, racial, sexual, whatever) and hence rarely have in-party racial difficulties. In other words they just assume white is right so they have no problems.

Democrats, on the other hand, don't. We try to really understand and appreciate people's differences. Naturally, sometimes this can lead to a sense that we've all somehow "done enough." And that we're tired of the bickering. The truth is that's the only way to bring change.

These are things we have to work through. It's to our credit we're trying and succeeding as well as we are. But we cannot simply be content to stay where we are. To sit on our butts and do no more. This is a change year, it's a change election and even some of us who have worked so hard and known that from the beginning need to accept that it is a work in progress and just maybe WE have more changing to do as well.

Please don't stop halfway. Become the change you want to see in the world. posted 05/17/2008 at 15:58:49

Why NARAL Pro-Choice America Endorsed Barack Obama

What is most important here is to support the candidate who defends a woman's right to choose.

If that is Hillary Clinton (please do not forget she has not dropped out yet) I am sure we will all close ranks around her. If it is Barack Obama I would ask that you do the same.

John McCain has made it clear (and even said) he would like to overturn Roe v. Wade, and would appoint justices to do so. Breyer is 88, Ginsberg is in her 70s and I believe Stevens too.

The point is anywhere from 2-4 Supreme Court Justices will be replaced during the next President's term ( 5 Justices are already conservative) easily pushing the total to 7.

Roe v. Wade CAN be overturned. Don't fool yourselves. So please, everyone, let's close ranks and tamp down the vitriol. If you want to be mad (as some of you are) or happy (as just as many others are) fine. But NARAL had to make a choice and they made it. Please stop yelling at them, or threatening not to support the other candidate. Women have fought TOO HARD for the right to choose. Now many of you are justifiably angry. Fine, you have a right to be. But please, dust yourselves off, air your legitimate grievances, and move on.

We must get a DEMOCRAT elected in the fall. We must protect a woman's right to choose and there is only ONE Party which will do so. posted 05/15/2008 at 00:04:23

Why Hillary Lost My Daughter and Me

Those are all good reasons but the author hit on the main point.

Why aren't young women flocking to Hillary? Easy she attacked them, precisely, for being young.

Well, someone should have told Hillary when she went after young people as "naive", started waving her hands in the sky and demeaning Barack Obama and his supporters about "the heavens opening and celestial choirs singing" young women took offense.

They are young, in addition to being women, after all. And apparently no one told Hillary they can vote. Well when you attack someone as naive, clueless, stupid and wrong merely because of their age you're darned right they get mad.

Now we can talk about how she brough Chelsea out later. Great. But the Clinton campaign started out openly contemptous of young people. They put no stock in their opinions and made the mistake of assuming young people wouldn't come out to vote. (They can deny it now, but they did.) They're reaping what they sowed now. posted 05/14/2008 at 03:43:15

What Do Obama/Clinton, Kennedy/Johnson and Nixon/Rockefeller Have in Common?

Yes you're the only one who remembers the 1960 convention.

And thank God. Obama's running a new type of campaign. If he puts Hillary on the ticket it destroys all of that. Clinton destroys his entire message, allows Republicans to run the comments Hillary made as an attack ad on him and ensures that he will never control his own White House. He can't do that.

He's got to go for either Webb (and get what Hillary indelicately termed as the working-class white vote back) or Sebelius (who is hugely qualified, gets you swing states and hopefully much of the woman's vote back.)

Either is doable and winnable. Technically Wesley Clark or Bill Richardson (to help with Latinos, swing voters and hopefully some WCWs) would do it as well or Strickland as a last resort. posted 05/14/2008 at 03:52:34

Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty Jokes His Wife Won't Have Sex With Him

Give them a break. He thought he was going to be V.P. and then McCain went and started talking about how the bridge collapse in St. Paul was the state's fault.

When they went to a McCain fundraiser in D.C. Mary Pawlenty referred to her husband as "45" as in the forty-fifth president (i.e. what I guess he thought he'd be after McCain.)

So for their family this really is a big blow. Young, Republican governor from what they thought was a swing state they were sure they had it. You have to understand how they could be havin' a few problems. posted 05/12/2008 at 22:55:07

New Clinton Team Motivation: Stick It To Naysayers

Can I just say, briefly, I disagree with this whole "Hillary Clinton has set women's candidates back" moronic issue some of you made up.

And I can't stand Hillary.

But look at Kathleen Sebelius, the governor of Kansas. You hear her name on here for V.P. and President in 2016 constantly. Look at Janet Napalitano, the governor of Arizona. Hugely popular, slightly younger than Sebelius (Sebelius is 59, I think Napalitano is like 54) and also a front-runner for 2016. Claire McCaskell, who's also younger, is quickly becoming a star. Sara Palin (governor, Alaska) and Cristine Gregoire (governor, Washington, and who's good on t.v.) Both in their 40s.

We're going to see a woman president in the next 8-12 years no matter what. She's probably not going to be named McCaskill. But we're going to see it, thank God. And these are all whip smart women.

They've learned a lot from this campaign about what to do and what not to do. And I guarantee you one of them is going to run and win. (Slightly off topic but they all seriously dislike Hillary. That to me has always said something about HRC, but whatever.)

Point is: society is changing. We're getting a woman president sooner or later (and this is coming from an Obama supporter.) Hillary's certainly not my first choice, and she's made many mistakes, but she's also made some huge gains we just can't quite see yet. posted 05/12/2008 at 03:53:37
This is not a mature approach.

I guess I understand it, to a small degree, from the Clinton campaign. Prove she can at least stay in until the end. And show some in the media, who are being insanely stupid, what is being done right. Ok. Cool. But after that, really now but whatever, the focus needs to start being on what's best for the Party and best for the country.

Getting back at people is a waste of time. For everyone. posted 05/12/2008 at 03:08:27

Open Letter to Two Undeclared College Superdelegates

Thank you Kal! You've summed up my feelings and reasons for voting for Senator Obama so much better than even I could!

As a young person I'm so inspired and happy to see his candidacy. He has hit on a message of change, hope and inclusion of young people (who DO have something to offer despite what many here and other places would have you think) that is resounding in this country. It is definitely time for these two young Democrats, whom we have heard make comments leaning towards Obama to commit.

With Hillary's supporters we would be unbeatable! Hope we can work over our differences and go forward. God knows we need all of your strength, experience and wisdom as much as we do Senator Clinton's. Let's get a Democrat back in the White House! posted 05/11/2008 at 23:46:32

ID-Less in Indiana

Couldn't agree more. This was the last of what I think were a series of anti-young people laws being pushed through. (Yes I think there are also anti-old people and anti-minority laws, but I think this one was aimed at young people.)

The problem is not that these people necessarily have no i.d. The problem is that students, many of whom are voting on the Univeristy of Indiana, Purdue and Notre Dame campuses, brought in their STUDENT i.d.s as any right-thinking individual might. Add to that school and finals had just ended that Saturday, many were graduating Sunday, packing relatives off home Monday and trying to vote Tuesday. That's a lot to ask from anyone. Given that the law only passed like literally 3 weeks ago, it's a reasonable conclusion. They were then turned away. Student i.d.s it turns out are not state i.d.s.

It was an absurd law and if passed, like any other law, there need to be some reasonable exceptions made. To me it's clear intent is to marginalize not minority, but rather young voters. It was passed by a G.O.P. Supreme Court mysteriously in the middle of a presidential primary and just before states with two of the biggest university systems (Indiana and North Carolina) voted. To me it's clearly an attempt to depress the Democratic turnout. Pure and simple. posted 05/12/2008 at 00:07:51

Thoughts on Yesterday's Rebel Attempt to Topple Khartoum

Always enjoy your thoughtful pieces, Ms. Farrow and thank you for your continued involvement in this cause.

Also congratulations on making TIme Magazine's 100 Most Influential People List!

Disagree with you slightly. JEM is doing what they must do (and we both know they're not perfect.) As much as I decry violence, there comes a time when it is necessary to fight in order to get your message out. As you admitted negotiations have essentially broken down, Bashar's government is stalling for time, and world attention has turned away. The only way to reverse this situation, unfortunately, is to attack. Then and only then can you get back to the negotiating table

This will make the U.N. take notice. Now whether they have the guts to actually step in, loosen the rules on the African Union peacekeeping forces already there, and actually do something is another question. But first you must get their attention again. posted 05/11/2008 at 23:36:28

What Should Obama Do In West Virginia and Kentucky?

Initially and still strongly agree with you.

If you'll look at what Senator Obama is wisely doing in Kentucky even now, pushing rightly the 2007 Senate bill he co-sponsored with Kentucky Republican Senator Jim Bunning to push new, clean coal over the older, more polluting version, he's doing this. And it's great!

But I've gradually had to abandon my view with respect to West Virginia. There seems to be an attempt there for a number of reasons to make sure Hillary wins by as much as possible. One reason seems to be so she can have at least one huge win before quitting, which I agree with.

Also some (not all) of West Virginia's voters have shown a strange aversion to even the mention of Barck Obama's name which some of us can only conjecture is a result of them being the 3rd oldest state, and being just slightly more resistant to change. Could be wrong. But he's right, for now, to not spend too much time in WV. Maybe come the general but not right now. posted 05/11/2008 at 23:57:55

Edwards: Clinton didn't choose words well on race

Couldn't agree more.

I mean, no offense, but West Virginia is about as stacked against him as you can get. It's a wondeful state, been there, they have beautiful cities like Huntington, but some of it's citizens just aren't progressive thinking.

Put it like this: It makes Ohio look like San Francisco, in terms of political views.

When JFK had to win it or leave the race in 1960, his father told him to not even bother and just bought it off. It's just not always the most receptive state to change. And when you have the 3rd oldest population in America, it's just hard for a young, half white/half black candidate. posted 05/12/2008 at 03:00:59
Read that too, it's disturbing.

At least people seem to understand why Obama' s going to lose that state by 70%.

Listen there's nothing wrong with West Virginia, been there it's a beautiful state, but it's also the 3rd oldest state in the nation. Many (not all) older people are rightly and justifiably proud of their previous acheivements. Sometimes however this makes them blind to the equally important changes that are coming in the future.

You cannot have a future without a past, but there is no point to the past without the future. posted 05/11/2008 at 22:28:55

"Saturday Night Live's" Message From Hillary Clinton: "I Have No Ethical Standards" (VIDEO)

Pre-Wright I would have agreed with you. But I'm sorry whatever the media gave Obama they more than took away from him during that almost 2 month long anti-Obama show the Reverend literally every second tirade.

This campaign, in terms of elections which started in January, has been going on for 5 months. They've definitely been unfair to Hillary. But 2 of those months were nothing but non-stop Reverend Wright. I wouldn't exactly say they were "going easy" on Obama during those times. posted 05/11/2008 at 21:33:13
Ummm we ARE beating the Repbulicans.

We've turned a district in Illinois, that has been Republican for 30 straight years, Democratic thanks to Obama.

Also we did the same thing with another district in Louisiana, which has been Republican for 20 straight years. There the Democratic candidate endorsed Obama, the Rethuglicans tried to run an attack ad using Wright against him, and the Democrat won. Ooops. Why do you think the Rethugs are encouraging McCain not to use Wright? It doesn't work.

So there you go 2 districts, one of which we haven't held in two decades and the other in three, Obama just turned from red to blue. Good enough for you? posted 05/11/2008 at 17:57:45
Well since 90% of black voters voted for BILL Clinton what were they then?

This is an idiotic point. The Democratic Party needs 90% of the black vote to win and has for a while. That's the way they built the Party. Whine to them not us and OBama.

Again Bill Clinton got 90% of the black vote and won both times. John Kerry got 84% and lost. The black vote in Ohio alone (had he gotten 90% of it ) would have won the election for Kerry.

So yeah 90% of the black vote (not 89% or 88% or 84%) is CRUCIAL to our Party winning. Certainly you don't think Hillary's going to get that now do you? posted 05/11/2008 at 17:53:39
Yeah there is a bit of an over-reaction by Clinton supporters on here. Read Obama supporters' letters, many of them are siding with you guys.

Why are you so sensitive to one skit? No offense but if must have really hit home or rang true on some level to get this kind of a reaction.

Certainly as an Obama supporter I don't agree with all of it, but again what's the big deal? I just don't get it. So some show made a joke about you and your candidate. That same show has treated us and our candidate like a joke from the beginning. Grow up a little and get over this. posted 05/11/2008 at 17:50:36
I personally didn't like the sketch. Both because I think SNL hasn't been funny for a while and it maybe pushed the Hillary message a little hard. (Although, disturbingly, she has been moving gradually in this direction, especially with respect to encouraging some of her supporters to be more racially closed minded.)

But where was the outrage when they were doing this to Obama? And in that case they did it, repeatedly, on the eve of important primaries.

I just think it's a double standard. If the Clinton supporters want to be mad about this sketch, then they should have been mad about the Obama ones too.

I know Clinton supporters are trying hard, and have a lot they're trying to adjust to, but they really do need to try to be more emotionally honest with themselves and consistent with the rest of us.

None of us are trying to tell you the media wasn't sexist against her. Why do you insist on pretending that, on the eve of Ohio and Pennsylvania, SNL, Letterman and Stewart all gave her the NYC home court push? posted 05/11/2008 at 13:26:54

Look I know it's ugly, I know it's stupid, I know the Clintons could more than easily pay this debt off themselves ($109 million) and some of us are giving money that's tough to give to Obama, but it's the way politics works.

Just let him pay her off and be done. It's worth it to finally get Obama the nomination that he's rightfully won. For Senator Clinton, possibly, it's a pride thing. Let her have it.

Give Senator Clinton a keynote address at the Convention. Be respectful, be kind, be nice to her supporters. Let her have a say over the Convention's platform. Will Obama Win Enough White Votes to Beat McCain?

You're sadly mistaken this time. Thomas, Scalia, Roberts and Alito would overturn it in a heartbeat.

Stevens is 88. Ginsberg and Souter are both in their 70s.

The next president could, potentially, appoint FOUR Supreme Court Justices. We've just NEVER seen as big a turnover as we're going to see in the next president's administration (even if that's only one term, four years.)

The stakes are just higher, when it comes to justices, this time. Anyone who doesn't think so is sadly mistaken. Heck a lot of people thought the Constitution couldn't be as effectively overturned and circumvented as it was in the Bush Administration. Just look how wrong they were. Don't be one of those people this time around. posted 05/10/2008 at 05:41:24
You do know those are all swing states the Democrats need to win don't you?

Missouri, Wisconsin and Iowa are all swing states.

Actually the media's underplayed his wins in each of these states. Particularly Wisconsin which was the last of his 11 straight wins and which really should have ended the race right then and there.

All are states Hillary would lose (as she would Colorad, Virginia and Maryland). So it seems to me the real underplayed story is the swing states Obama is winning, and Hillary would lose. Any three of which could cost her the White House. posted 05/09/2008 at 02:10:10
Don't know if anyone's told you but Democrats never win more than 40% of the white male vote anyway.

Bill Clinton got 40% both times. Al Gore only got 36% and came within a hair's breadth of winning the presidency.

If Obama can get 38% of white male support he'll waltz into the White House.

Black support, on the other hand (sorry know everybody's sick of hearing about this, but since it's the topic at hand) you gotta get 90%. Bill Clinton got 90% and won. John Kerry got 84% and lost. Do the math.

Of course, Barack Obama has a GREAT deal of work to do with white voters male and (especially) female. But he CAN win this election. Don't let the media fool you.

If he gets 38% of ALL white male support (including educated, those with college degrees which the MSM decries as "elite" as well as blue collar) he'll win the election and sweep into the White House on January 20, 2009. posted 05/09/2008 at 00:50:59

John McCain also wants another 100 Years in Iraq. I won't bore you with my personal stories, since I know many non-young Clinton voters think we young people don't understand anything, but this is far more dangerous of an idea than you realize. People, real people, will die because of it.

Obama Vice President Picks: Who Are The Frontrunners?

Also with all due respect SCREW that.

The Senate CAN spare his seat. They're just whining because Webb gives them some backbone on the Hill.

The truth of the matter is Virginia has an excess, not shortage, of qualified Democratic candidates.

Tim Kaine. Mark Warner could take Webb's seat if need be. Ditto Doug Wilder who's already been a U.S. Senator, is currently the mayor of Richmond and would love to run again. Same goes for Chuck Robb.

This is a red herring. There are plenty of qualified Democrats in Virginia who not only could take Webb's seat, but run in a GE and actually win it against pretty much any Republican.

To me it's also partially out of fear that many of the higher-ups in the Party (who still support HRC) have that they know we're right and hit on the silver bullet: An Obama/Webb ticket would win. posted 05/10/2008 at 03:11:15
A much better idea than you will probably get credit for.

Obama ONLY needs Pennsylvania, Florida or Ohio. Just 1. But he has to have 1 of the 3.

Since Rendell is a lose cannon who constantly spews off at the mouth and has shown that he has reservations about Obama winning Casey is a MUCH better pick than usually given credit for.

Granted you have the substantial one term Senator/one term Senator ticket which could prove difficult but Casey is a pro-gun, anti-abortion Catholic who could easily get the swing voters Obama needs in PA and OH.

Plus he and Obama seem to genuinely like each other. And their styles compliment. Obama is high-minded, Casey practical. Not a bad choice at all. posted 05/10/2008 at 03:06:33

Nuns, Students Blocked from Voting in Indiana -- Where's Congress?

This is to me the most disturbing trend. Why we always insist on finding every possible way to attempt to disenfranchise young voters and African-Americans EVERY election (this is not a Clinton/Obama issue, it's been a problem for at least 8 years now, and ask some black Kerry voters in Ohio about it) is shocking and disappointing to me!

What's the problem? I honestly don't get it. I've had to watch young voters continuously argue with election officials every time I've went in to vote. The only way I've seen the workers get off their back is if they tell them, "This isn't my first election."

It's really odd to me. Is it just an assumption that young people don't know what the heck they're doing? No offense, but the 80-year old lady who runs my polling station can hardly read, we all know it, her co-workers know it but we don't complain.

As for African-Americans, which is equally if not more disturbing, we've known what the case there is forever in this country. Do anything you can to disenfranchise them. Florida, Ohio, it doesn't matter it just keeps going.

Why the government refuses to fix this amazes me. Whoever the next Attorney General is (hopefully John Edwards) I hope they will look seriously into this. posted 05/07/2008 at 05:23:46

So now economists are "elitist" too, huh Senator Clinton? Who will you be listening to then? Is this like when that pesky little National Intelligence Estimate raised doubts about invading Iraq and you didn't bother to read what those experts had to say either?

Senator Clinton's continued pattern of ignoring experts, because she's assured her often wrong judgement is somehow right, is disturbing and the main reason I won't be voting for her. posted 05/04/2008 at 18:30:35

Actor Tom Hanks Endorses Barack Obama

Did you see Philadelphia? Did you see Forrest Gump? Did you see Apollo 13? Did you see Saving Private Ryan? Two Oscars.

Yeah I hope Barack Obama is as much of a "mediocre" president as Tom Hanks is a "mediocre" actor.

Yeah or maybe as "mediocre" of a president as Ernest Hemingway is "mediocre" of a writer.

Apparently you and society have very different definitions of mediocre. posted 05/05/2008 at 04:00:04

Early Indiana turnout heavy in strong Obama counties

THIS DOESN'T MEAN CLINTON IS WINNING EITHER.

The reverse of what all these posters are saying is also true. Just because political scientests THINK Hillary's going to win doesn't mean she IS going to win.

Your vote is your vote. No one can tell you what to do with it. Just because you're young or want change, doesn't mean your vote doesn't count just as much as everyone else's.

This shows that there is hope for Obama in Indiana. Particularly if all of his supporters, in the small towns, the universities and the cities get out there to vote for him, this shows HE CAN WIN. posted 05/03/2008 at 13:23:10

John Gibson Mocks Rachel Maddow's Sexuality: "Ooh, Lesbians! Yummy!"

John Gibson's beneath contempt.

The Right WIng's just mad because Rachel Maddow regularly embarasses them (especially that moron Joe Scarborough who's always wrong, never able to admit it, and still maintaining even today on Race for the White House that Hillary Clinton has ran a good campaign.)

Their problem is Maddow uses reason and logic to make the Republicans look like the morons they are.

For anyone who actually cares, Maddow was also a Rhodes Scholar, which is pretty much the hardest graduate program one can get into.

Things like this make me so mad it's hard to even engage with them. It's none of Gibson's business. What the heck does Rachel Maddow's personal life have to do with anything? There's nothing wrong with being a lesbian. Maybe he's just mad because he knows she's not only smarter than him but definitely doesn't want his old wrinkled rear end.

All of this homophobic, racist, sexist crap that this campaign has somehow managed to bring to the surface really HAS TO STOP in this country. This is America for crying out loud. People have a right to be what they want to be. I've never been so glad, in my life, to be part of a younger generation that hopefully will live to see all of this crap go by the wayside.

Clinton Challenges Obama To Debate Without A Moderator, Lincoln-Douglas Style

The audacity of hopelessness by Hillary Clinton: voting for the Iraq War, refusing to say you're sorry, voting for Kyl-Lieberman paving the way an Iran War, pushing through a bill allowing credit card companies to charge 30% interest to indebited people, threatening to nuke Iran for looking at any country, making fun of young people, disenfranchising voters.

And all the while seek to destroy not only your opponent who dares to speak about hope, but also registers millions of new young people, had the sense to oppose the war from the start, won't nuke Iran any day of the week and twice on Sunday, actually wants to DECREASE senior taxes, lower gasoline prices and get us the heck out Iraq.

But by all means vote for Hillary. She is after all the establishment candidate (the Stephen Douglas to Barack Obama's Abraham Lincoln you might say), she's white, she's older and heck we feel safer. The Clintons and Bushes have been screwing us long enough. No reason to stand up now. No reason to actually try to change our and our children's lives by voting for Obama. No, we are far too scared of a people for that.

There was a time when we were brave. There was a time when we elected a Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and yes a F.D.R. There was a time when we Americans had the bravery to claim our birthright and hope. Sadly that time seems to be fading quickly into the past. posted 04/27/2008 at 05:18:09
I'm so sorry. You're right. I want all of the people who supported the Iraq War (like Hillary), who think 30% interest on credit cards are reasonable (like Hillary), and who support nuking Iran for our allies in the region, not just Israel but Saudi Arabia and Iraq (like Hillary) to please, PLEASE, PUH-LEASE come around to Obama.

I'm willing to give up all we're fighting against and all change to grovel on my knees for those who support and helped get us into this mess to come back around.

Or maybe I want real change like Barack, maybe I understand THE SYSTEM ITSELF IS BROKEN, and this is not just another minute policy issue like Hillary Clinton. But then again I still have hope and I'm young. So maybe Barack is wrong and Hillary is right. I will immediately abandon all hope and sell out to the same corrupt system we've been victim to for the past 20 years. I feel so much better now. posted 04/27/2008 at 05:04:19
You mean the fact Barack admitted any connection they might have and gave the money back? Blasphemy?

But, no, you're right Hillary Clinton is not the establishment candidate. She's not the one who's been crooked since at least 1992 when her husband got elected. She's not the one who's worth $109 million and who, with Bill, has managed to do more to entrench themselves with the political elite than any two other candidates ever.

No it's Barack Obama, with his student loans and message of change, who is the real establishment candidate, the real threat.

Because he challenges the status quo?

Yeah, no, you're right. Thanks. The Clintons have no entrenchment with monied interests. And theirs are ago because they're called Peter Paul, Norman Hsu, the Carlyle Group (which profits off Saudi oil), NAFTA, Elton John and others who have been in power for 20 years.

Any one who thinks Rezko is a drop in the bucket compared to the last 20 years of Bush/Clinton graft, greed, hypocrisy and yes monied interests in this country is beyond naive.

But no, by all means, keep fighting for that Clinton campaign against monied interests ignore the fact after she's in we're back to the same people who have managed to rob us all blind.)

Second, it makes us all realize how big of a joke the ABC gotcha game debate was.

And third it reminds us of how much Barack, in rising above this crap, really is like Lincoln. So why don't all of you scared, cowering, pitiful excuse for Democrats Clinton supporters go yell about being "brave" and "nuking Iran" go hide somewhere else. That's what they said about Lincoln. Check the literature of the time.

They claimed Lincoln was a punk and fled from the South.

That doesn't change the fact that Lincoln was what he truly was, the same thing as Obama, a great leader.

Notice they also called FDR a girly man, Washington not strong enough to lead, and Andrew Jackson incapable of running a government.

Anytime a man is a real man, and a great leader (read Winston Churchill or any of the examples above) poor excuses for a leader like Hillary Clinton and sad supporters like you call them a punk.

Agan don't forget people at the time claimed Douglas was the better debater.

They said he had more specific and implementable idea.

They said Lincoln talked too much, gave too many speeches and was too high-minded. Remind anyone of Barack? A great deal of Lincoln's support also came from African Americans and young people.

Douglas also enjoyed support from a number of whites who said they weren't racist, per se, they were just uncomfortable with Lincoln's stance towards blacks.

Lincoln gave a reasoned speech on race, much like Obama, chiding both sides blacks and whites for what they were doing right and wrong.

So I for one am glad the Clinton campaign's finally fessing up to what we really have here a choice between a Lincoln-esque candidate, Obama, and another Stephen Douglas, Hillary Clinton. posted 04/26/2008 at 20:05:39
Yeah great example.

People didn't understand what Lincoln was saying, chastised him for his "house divided message", called him all rhetoric and elected Douglas to the Senate. Four years later they realized their mistake, and overwhelmingly elected Lincoln president.

Not sure that's the pattern the Clinton campaign should really be trying to follow, casting her as Stephen Douglas (the shorter, more wonkier, details-based one of the two) and Obama as Lincoln (the taller, more articulate, hopeful, big message one), but whatever. I'm all for it. posted 04/26/2008 at 19:58:59

Yeah you guys are forgetting the other half of that sentence:

Teddy Roosevelt preceded it with "SPEAK SOFTLY and carry a big stick."

She's doing just the opposite. Which is why it's MORE likely to cause a war rather than less.

You have to speak softly first, otherwise you're like the little dog that keeps jumping up and barking, no one takes you seriously, and you have to actually start the fight.

That's what she is right now, with statements like this. posted 04/24/2008 at 03:39:37

I like Evan Bayh a lot, but remember his questioning at the Petraeus hearing two weeks ago. He was extremely deferential to the general. He's one of those hard-line Democrats. He's not the type of guy you want to consult on national security, because he's always inevitably going to lean towards the more aggressive side.

Someone REALLY needs to call Hillary to task for these Iran remarks and ask her to explain them.

I've listened and tried to post patiently, as all members here can attest, to all blogs including the ones arguing (often correctly) that Hillary has been the victim of sexism.

But this is the most blatant, ambush/attack on any candidate I've ever seen in my life merely for them having the nerve to win and challenge the status quo. Far worse than anything, even dating back to Nixon, the American public has ever had the misfortune to witness.

I hope George Stephanopolous, who worked for Bill Clinton, is proud of what he's done. He's lowered American politics even below the sewer level at which it's hovered since at least the Reagan administration. The worst example of politics this country has ever seen. For shame! I'm embarassed by what happened tonight. All good Americans should be too. posted 04/17/2008 at 03:56:17

Reclaiming Pro-Israel Peace and Stability

The problem is this, like so many other issues, has become one of those dreaded third rails of politics no one is wililng to touch. The solution, as the author outlines, is to stop the settlements, stop cutting of the Palestinians medical aid and electricity, start treating them as human beings, improving the conditions at the refugee camps, quit treating the Palestinians as if they're living in a refugee camp and quit launching offensive operations against them.

These are things all sides, including the right wing Likud Party, can agree on. Do these firts. Then get to the tricky part like a Palestinian state.

The problem is that approach is called diplomacy and it's one we've abandoned. You negotiate from strength, but not from ignorance. If you agree with your opponent on something concede the point rather than fighting them on it simply because they're your opponent. There are plenty of substantial steps one can take with regards to this situation without being called anti-Israeli or pro-Palestinian. Take those first. posted 04/16/2008 at 16:54:34

Burn the Witch: The Case Against Gloria Allred

Don't call women witches. It is in no way helpful and if you really have something to say it's just going to cause a lot of people to ignore it.

"Get rid of this disgusting human being" would have been just as powerful and carried the same message without an inane and certainly loaded headline. posted 04/16/2008 at 02:45:14

The Real Feminist Thing To Do is Acknowledge Hillary's Failures as a Candidate and Move On

The author gets one thing right, there is a record number of viable female candidates lined up and more than likely soon to be running for the presidency:

Kathleen Sebelius, Janet Napalitano, Cristine Gregoire, Claire McCaskill, M. Jodi Rell, Kathleen Blanco, Sara Palin and Jennifer Granholm to name a few.

I'm not a woman and won't pretend to understand what sexism feels like. I also won't say just wait. I cannot guarantee that any of them will win. But I, for one, do think we will see a woman president and very soon in this country. I also think that some who view Hillary Clinton as the last chance to have a woman president in their lifetime, are mistaken.

Watch Sebelius. I'd be surprised if she doesn't make a run at it and at least win the Democratic nomination in 2016. posted 04/15/2008 at 19:26:24

McCain, Military Oppose Expanding GI Bill

He's really gonna regret this when Jim Webb is Barack's VP nominee and Webb calls McCain out on this every day on the campaign trail. Huge mistake. posted 04/15/2008 at 12:56:11

The Alabama of Pennsylvania Mirrors New Hampshire

Actually found it a pretty well-reasoned article by an actual political science professor. The title was stupid, but the rest was right on point. The polls show it, the people who study it say it, but no one will believe it. "Bittergate" is going to have next to 0 effect on this primary outcome on April 22nd. posted 04/15/2008 at 13:00:18

Obama: "Hope And Anger Go Hand And Hand"

Well are we supposed to be thrilled by the Bush Administration's tearing up of the Constitution, destroying of our economy and plunging us into a useless war in Iraq?

When even HRC supporters tell you, HuffPo, that picture's really toeing the line in trying to portray the whole "angry black man" Obama you invented, you know it's true. As close to a hit piece as I've seen in a while. posted 04/15/2008 at 12:54:31
