Use your own brain: if individuals didn't voluntarily enter into the military, the draft would be re-instituted.

Personally, I would much rather spend money on supporting our troops who have served, than on the war itself. I don't support the Iraq war (the Afghanistan war is another matter).

But I DO support our troops and would gladly pay for their education. posted 05/08/2008 at 09:54:16

The Pro Teen Sex and Unwanted Pregnancy Movement

Good for you! You are very much the exception in remaining married to your teen bride.

But you didn't, as a teen, avoid temptation, did you? And neither will most teens. posted 05/08/2008 at 09:12:32
It's all connected. Overpopulation is a big issue.

One of the more environmentally-friendly things someone can do these days is not have kids or only have 1 or 2 kids. For some reason, this point of view does not seem to be popular at all, maybe because it's politically charged.

I'm all for fewer people on our planet and a higher quality of life for ALL. The only way to achieve that is to educate people. And, BTW, this does not mean PROMOTING abortion. It means promoting the use of birth control and educating women on how to avoid getting pregnant when they don't want to be. posted 05/08/2008 at 08:55:59

American Idol Top 4: Jason's Last Bow

I agree on all counts. They really should raise the age to at least 18. posted 05/08/2008 at 09:42:16
I like David A, but only because he has the BEST voice and always makes the songs sound good, regardless of what they are. He sings on key, has good rhythm and phrasing, and makes good choices when changing it up.

I do think he needs much much more coaching on stage presence, and, of course, he just needs some time to grow up. He's only 17, and a young 17, at that. The eye closing thing is a tough one, and MOST of the performers on AI do it. Jason does it, Brooke did it, Ramielle did it, Kristie did it.

David C is my next choice, then Syesha.

IMO, Jason should have been gone AT LEAST 2 weeks ago. I really just don't like him at all. posted 05/07/2008 at 16:29:46

True. Daughtry has done pretty well for himself, and he didn't win the thing. I don't think Cook needs to win it to make a career of it. He might have more flexibility in his career if he doesn't actually win it. posted 04/30/2008 at 12:56:27
It's time for Jason to go home. He was cute but boring, and his voice is marginal.

Brooke was perky but mostly boring--her second song was better, but not great.

Syesha was entertaining and she's a good singer, but I don't think she's really found her style.

David Archuleta has a great voice and that always saves him, but his performances last night were fairly lame. I didn't really like "America" despite what the judges said.

David Cooke was the only one that truly put together a performance that captured my attention completely (his second song, not his first one). And he is also a very skilled singer. I think he's going to win this. posted 04/30/2008 at 10:27:55

I didn't like her pop, the song was boring, and I agree that her stage presence is marginal. But with the right coaching on stage presence and some better songs, she could be very interesting. posted 04/24/2008 at 14:20:48

Let's Give Our Kids All The Information They Need To Make Safe, Healthy Choices

Interesting question. All I know is that someone who is gay or transgender may start to realize at a VERY young age that they are different. If the children are exposed to someone like that, they see the difference and need explanations.

The son of a friend of mine started to say (at approximately age 7) that he wanted to be a girl. It was very clear that he was "different". It was very difficult. Both the adults and the children around him needed help in understanding him and accepting him. posted 04/24/2008 at 09:30:48

I mostly agree. I am also disappointed in how Hillary has handled herself.

But by the same token, we can't expect her to step down from the race (not because we shouldn't but because we KNOW she won't), and there are people out there who could end this quandary --and haven't. posted 04/24/2008 at 12:32:12
Fair enough....I'm just saying: spread the blame around. She's not the only one that doesn't want this contest decided just yet. And she's not the only one NOT sticking to the issues (ABC debate . . . er, debacle).

And the one group that could decide this, right here right now, are the superdelegates. They need to step up and force the issue. posted 04/24/2008 at 12:25:44
Where? Where?

But on a more serious note: it's up to the superdelegates to end it. There's no reason HRC should end it, and she won't. So why blame her? However much you hate her (speaking of hate ....) she's following the process. By all rights, HIllary or Barack could still be the nominee.

I blame the superdelegates, not Hillary. posted 04/24/2008 at 11:20:46

Earth Day Beyond Bush

Well, you're right that a smaller, green house would be even greener. But my house is also my workplace (no commuting!).

I agree that the photovoltaic solar panels are pretty darned expensive. We did look into paneling the entire roof with solar, and I would have LOVED to do that and run my electric meter backwards. But it was not economically feasible--the payoff was about 15 years. Now, if the payoff had been 5 years, I would have done it without a second thought. posted 04/23/2008 at 10:44:25
Here's an article:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24243063/

But I was really speaking to your point from a very personal level. I recently remodeled my house and added foam insulation and a single solar panel (passive solar for heating water). I also replaced my A/C with an evaporative cooler (not feasible everywhere, but where I live they work ideally) and installed triple-pane windows. Any replaced appliance were Energy Star. I added quite a bit of square footage during the remodel (went from 2800 sq ft to 4100 sq ft) and my electric and gas bills went down to 80% of what they were in the smaller house.

And on a much broader note, if we all had 40 mpg cars, we would all be better off economically right now. posted 04/22/2008 at 14:17:12
"it's is not worth blowing up our entire economy"

Many of the environmentally friendly options out there would actually help our economy quite a bit.

I agree with you that fuel efficiency in our automobiles would be the #1 thing we could do---and I think we could do it quite a bit more quickly than some have suggested.

I do not agree with you that climate change is a hoax. posted 04/22/2008 at 10:08:56

American Idol Top 8: Inspirational Song Night

I like Syesha's voice, but she lacks one very important quality when she's on stage: authenticity. She just isn't convincing me. It's that very quality of authenticity and honesty on stage that makes Jason attractive (not his voice, in my opinion). posted 04/10/2008 at 08:51:44

I think you picked the right bottom 3. But I think Syesha and Carly will be the bottom 2, not Brooke. She will squeak by, just from being more likeable than Carly.

I hope Jason Castro goes home, but he won't. Don't get me wrong, I think Jason has loads of charisma, more than any other contestant, possibly. But he has no voice. He could get something reasonable going if he took a few vocal lessons and worked a little harder. I don't think he wants it enough and he's just along for the ride.

Regarding David Archuleta, I think he has the best voice of all of them hands down and he is, for 17, already a very good player and performer. posted 04/10/2008 at 08:45:01
