Pelosi: House Judiciary Committee May Hold Impeachment Hearings

The US only accepts the world court's (ICJ) jurisdiction on a case-by-case basis, and can veto UN enforcement of a ruling because it is a permanent member of the UN.

The ICJ would be a more fitting court for the Bushies in terms of war crimes, but the US (via Cheney) and Israel withdrew from their jurisdiction in 2002. No one at the ICJ would have the jurisdiction to bring about criminal charges, even if the American people wanted it to happen. That's why it's even more important that the American government police its own.

Sad, isn't it?

My Conversation with Former U.S. Secretaries of State James Baker and Warren Christopher

Mr. Rose, up until last night, you were one of my favorite journalists, because I always thought you were insightful and fair. However, when you asked how anyone could disagree with this proposal, I was appalled. The Constitution is clear, and this faux debate on the war powers of the executive branch is a false flag. The president should "consult" with congress, with stipulations as to who that should or should not be? That proposition is the exact opposite of what the Constitution states. Shame on you. posted 07/10/2008 at 02:23:38

Supreme Court Upholds Right To Own Guns For Self-Defense

"Take the guns away from the government and give them to the people."

Most people miss that this is the point of the law (and I am not a gun advocate). In other words, this law was meant for the times like when the government goes rogue (a little too close for comfort right now). This was a good decision. posted 06/26/2008 at 21:27:13
I am also from DC and I disagree. Though I am far from a handgun advocate, the ban in DC was unconstitutional. In addition, the majority of people who commit crimes usually get their handguns illegally, or would not be eligible to purchase a handgun under this ruling. posted 06/26/2008 at 21:16:45

"What will impeachment really achieve."

I think the better question might be, "What will impeachment prevent?" Bush is ramping up the talk on Iran, and he is aggressively trying to push through the SOFA in Iraq that would establish 58 military bases. If he is not able to get all of his ducks in a row, what will he do?

Besides, what you or I, or even what any representative thinks doesn't matter. Our congress is sworn to uphold the Constitution of the US, whether we (or they) like it or not. posted 06/24/2008 at 23:10:55

McCain Calls For Better Electric Car Battery, Proposes $300 Million Bounty

My previous post is in the Huffpo ether....Anyway

I don't think that Mc Cain's idea is bad, I think it is the same as O bama's, but less thought out. It's a matter of providing a cash prize vs. a tax credit. I tend to think that these companies would prefer the latter.

In addition, looking at promoting just a battery is a) bad business, and b) short-sighted. That battery will have to work with a number of components, not just in isolation. Furthermore, if we are going to throw money at the problem, we need to look at the larger picture. This means not just focusing on a battery, but focusing as well on issues like emissions.

As far as drilling, I think that the oil companies need to drill into the reserves (79%) that they already have access to, instead of looking at new wells. If the push for new technology is strong enough, we could be using alternative energy in 10-15 years, instead of just starting to tap a new oil well. The other immediate solution is to close the Enron loophole.

Though the Democrats may be losing on this issue, that doesn't mean (at least in this case) that they are wrong. posted 06/23/2008 at 19:41:34
I don't think it's a bad idea, I think it is the same idea as Obama has, the only difference being tax credits vs. a cash prize. I tend to think that the tax credits would be a bigger motivation for companies.

Also, I think its bad business to promote the building of a singular component, the battery, rather than the whole car. We need to look at other factors as well, such as emissions. Just promoting the battery puts limits on innovation before it starts.

And as far as drilling, I tend to think that drilling the reserves that we already have is a much better cushion between now and when these technologies come to fruition, rather than promoting new wells that will take 10 years to produce usable oil. If the push is made for alternative energies, we could have those on the table and ready to go in 10-15 years.

Not an energy expert, just my two cents... posted 06/23/2008 at 18:28:40
This is BS. Obama's suggestion to give tax credits to companies to develop alternative energy ensures that the best product emerges from healthy competition. Pushing the McBattery without looking at the other components is idiotic. Any business savvy person knows this. For those who say this is a good idea, I disagree. It is either pandering or stupidity at its worst. posted 06/23/2008 at 17:51:43

We do not commit to the press; we make that commitment to facts. Each of us is reviewing whether we will continue to support your stations and your advertisers.

The decision to mislead the American people is a troubling one. We hope this does not presage a relationship with the press that is not based on a mutual respect for the truth. Our joint mission is to hold our government accountable on behalf of the millions of worldwide viewers and readers. Those individuals expect truthful and fair coverage from you. The American people expect nothing short of that from you as well. Surely you should expect the same from yourselves. We sincerely hope we can expect a relationship based on mutual trust in the coming years of this country's existence.

Going forward, we know from experience that covering the news requires integrity and honor. There may be times when the press needs to address injustices that may go against the press' own financial and political interests. This is standard operating procedure for any member of the press, and highlights the importance of freedom of speech as outlined in our constitution.

There are many ways in a campaign to disseminate news and conduct private business that does not involve deceiving the American people. Over the last 8 years, the Washington bureau chiefs of ABC News, CBS News, CNN, Fox News, NBC News, and the Associated Press have misled the American people. We strongly protest the events of the last eight years.

To review, the American people were told that you would be unbiased reporters of the news. You were not. Then, the American people looked to the press to provide needed and facts about many issues pressing our country. You did not. When pressed repeatedly, the press insisted that the war was legal. It was not. When you continued to peddle lies, there were loud protests from the American people because we were not given the option knowing the full truth.

I too, have worked with addicts, and I agree that sympathy (not pity) should be had for them. HOWEVER, so much of being a fully recovering addict is the ability to understand how your actions affect yourself and others--in other words, empathy. As you stated, addicts tend to become very selfish and lack this key trait.

The fact that Cindy McCain has been taking cheap shots at Michelle Obama shows that she lacks empathy. Furthermore, it shows a willingness to lie and manipulate to get something that she wants--clearly addict behavior.

Perhaps her stint in rehab without having to suffer the full consequences of her actions (like so many other addicts do) has caused her to stop using drugs, but keep the habits that fueled her addiction. She needs empathy, yes, along with a swift kick in the a$$. posted 06/20/2008 at 01:28:33

Further, these statements emphasize that this commitment is lifelong in nature and should be

Thank you for this article. What people don't understand is that the constitution is about the rights that we confer on the government, not the other way around. According to the founders, we are the ones that have the powers and freedoms, and it is the government who must be kept in check.

The right to bear arms is not a right granted to you by the government, it is so that you can overthrow a tyrannous government. Freedom of speech was not a freedom granted to you, but so that you have the ability to criticize the government.

That's why the latest SC decision was so startling. Without habeas corpus, all other rights are lost. If the government can hold you without reason, then you have no other rights--speech, arms, etc. This decision was not about giving illegals the right to trial (which is not even what habeas corpus means), but limiting our government when it tries to overreach its powers. posted 06/17/2008 at 01:14:27

I am sure that you would agree that countries such as England, who have innocent detainees at Gitmo, might be less willing to share their intelligence with us if we keep locking up their citizens without due process.

Weren't we supposed to be bringing democracy to the Iraqis and helping them to set up their own government? This goes completely in the wrong direction. posted 06/14/2008 at 18:10:21

McCain: Guantanamo Decision One Of the Worst Ever

McCain would be right if we were talking like POWS like we should be, because they would be protected under the Geneva Convention instead. But once Bush started to make up categories like enemy combatant in order to circumvent international laws, things got effed up. The problem is that the government (thanks to the patriot act) can designate anyone as an enemy combatant, not just someone fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan. That means you or me. The court's only choice was to rule for habeas corpus, or risk stripping some of its citizens of a basic constitutional right. posted 06/14/2008 at 18:50:38

Malcolm, Albright Urge Female Voters To Get Behind Obama

"The large majority of the mainstream media as well as on the blogs have been overwhelmingly sexist to the point of misogyny," said Sharon Gorseld, Executive Director of the DNC's Women's Leadership Forum. "There really needs to be an examination by the media, journalists, and owners of outlets. There needs to be a long term analysis and study of this problem and they can use Senator Clinton's campaign as a starting point."

Ms. Gorseld, there needs to be an examination of not only misogny, racism, classism, etc. Unity comes with sympathy to those who shared a similar plight as yours during this election season. posted 06/13/2008 at 00:37:51

A Warning to My Old Republican Friends: Screw Up The Obama Moment and You're History -- Literally

Ummm, the government under Bush is one of the largest its ever been. You might also want to note that Bush;s shredding of the constitution has brought us closer to the Gestapo than we have ever been. And though you claim that republicans are all about choices, I guess that doesn't apply to a women's right to choose to have an abortion or for gay couples to get married.

This is BASIC. Are you even awake? posted 06/13/2008 at 00:19:09

Being Gracious in a Sexist World

Just some history lessons:

1) Though black men got the vote on paper before women, they did not get the chance to actually exercise that vote until well after women did.

2) The reason why women did not get the vote sooner was because "feminists" like Susan B. Anthony threw black women under the bus. When it looked like either voting rights for blacks or women would pass, but not both, Susie cozied up to the racists in the government to persuade them that allowing white women to vote was better than letting any black vote. They gambled and lost, thus delaying women's suffrage for decades.

3) Just because there is not "strange fruit" hanging from a tree, doesn't mean that there aren't modern day lynchings going on. Just ask Sean Bell, or any African American male in jail.

Your words imply that black folks unfairly got rights before (white) women. Perhaps you should open your perspective a bit more. posted 06/04/2008 at 16:54:33

Durbin On Clinton Camp Raising Wright: Try Your Best

But what you and others who use the "get over it" excuse fail to understand is that past injustices have not been made right. Just like women earn seventy cents on the dollar for the same job as her male counterpart, African American opportunities are not equal. Take the subprime loan crisis for example. A disproportionate amount of blacks were offered subprime loans, even when they qualified for better loans. This is just one of many examples of injustices that have yet to be "righted." posted 04/04/2008 at 00:03:48

Sean Hannity Confronted Over His Relationship With Neo-Nazi Hal Turner

Just one question Mr. Boyce. If no one has anything to hide, then why were all references to Sean Hannity deleted from Hal Turner's wikipedia page when this story broke?

Is a Sad History Repeating Itself?

1) Jan 10 08--Clinton Advisor "If you have a social need, you're with Hillary. If you want Obama to be your imaginary hip black friend and you're young and you have no social needs, then he's cool."

2) Jan 10 08--Andrew Cuomo, Clinton Supporter; of Obama, "You can"t shuck and jive at a press conference."

3) Jan 7 08--Fracine Torge, Introducing Clinton before LBJ speech, "Some people compare one of the other candidates to John F. Kennedy. But he was assassinated. And Lyndon Baines Johnson was the one who actually passed the civil rights legislation."

4) Feb 13--Robert Ford, ""Then everybody else on the ballot is doomed. Every Democratic candidate running on that ticket would lose because he's black and he's at the top of the ticket. We'd lose the House, the Senate and the governors and everything."

And many more... posted 03/23/2008 at 03:40:31

The Wheels Come Off -- Again

But Mr. Fisher, you forgot some of Hagee's greatest hits:

WHAT ABOUT THIS:
The Express-News reported:

Hagee, pastor of the 16,000-member Cornerstone Church, last week had announced a "slave sale" to raise funds for high school seniors in his church bulletin, "The Cluster."

The item was introduced with the sentence "Slavery in America is returning to Cornerstone" and ended with "Make plans to come and go home with a slave."

A July 27, 2006, Wall Street Journal article about Hagee noted the incident:

To help students seeking odd jobs, his church newsletter, The Cluster, advertised a "slave" sale. "Slavery in America is returning to Cornerstone," it said. "Make plans to come and go home with a slave." Mr. Hagee apologized but, in a radio interview, protested about pressure to be "politically correct" and joked that perhaps his pet dog should be called a "canine American."

AND THIS:
In his book What Every Man Wants in a Woman (Charisma House, 2005), Hagee wrote:

"Do you know the difference between a woman with PMS and a snarling Doberman pinscher? The answer is lipstick. Do you know the difference between a terrorist and a woman with PMS? You can negotiate with a terrorist."

Obama, Clinton And McCain's Passports Breached: Two State Dept Officials Fired, Investigation Underway

This press argument doesn't hold water. Why would the first breach have happened right after Iowa--not the best time for negative press. And what assurances would the Obama campaign have that the supervisor who did not report the breaches--a Clinton supporter--would have knowingly broken protocol?

Instead, follow the money. Stanley, Inc. just got a new DOS contract last year to build two new facilities. Where is Stanley's main headquarters--New Hampshire. Where did they build their two new facilities--Arkansas and Arizona. When did they first start working with the DOS--in 1992 right after Bill Clinton came into office. Just another angle to look at... posted 03/23/2008 at 01:33:26
ACTUALLY, as of January 2008, the DOS gave clearance to all contractors to have the ability to view and modify all passport documents. (note the date) You can find this info on the DOS website. It is less likely that this person is a programmer than someone who does mid-level data entry.

And, your argument about smaller government doesn't hold. Bush's government contracted to private companies in order to keep government small. posted 03/23/2008 at 01:24:46
