I am a conservative with a desire to discuss the important issues that face our country in a manner where we can unite again as a nation. I am deeply concerned that sites like this only add hatred and divisiveness to the equation, not intelligent discourse. Mostly, we need people who put the good of our nation ahead of their own personal gain.
For example, let's look at the resolution to go to war in Iraq. It was known at the time by Congressional committees that the intelligence about WMD was sketchy at best. (This was reported by the Washington Post and other "reliable sources prior to the vote.) Yet the president attempted to overreach in his powers by forcing a vote to authorize the use of force in Iraq. At the time, his approval rating was 70%.
So why didn't Congress, seeing that the President was overreaching in his powers, use the powers vested in them by the Constitution to "check" those powers and force the President to make a better case?
The answer? It was 30 days before the 2002 elections. The people who should have used their conscience like Hillary Clinton and John Edwards instead chose the path of political expediency.
It's easy for one man or woman to abuse their power in the role of the presidency. But the fact that hundreds of Congressmen and women chose the selfish route, despite evidence to the contrary, demonstrates a fundamental problem with the way we elect the legislative branch of government. That's the real problem.
Yet I read on this site only that Bush/Cheney are evil war mongerers. How exactly are we going to have better leaders in the future when we are unwilling to look at the mistakes of our past without the ideological kaliedoscope?
As one small voice, I will do what I can to change the discourse into a discussion on important issues...without insults and innuendo. I hope you will do the same.
