1. Al Gore's stewardship of the climate change challenge is unassailable.
2. For him, most of the duties and challenges of the Presidency would in fact be distractions from the critical role that he can play in this most important issue.
3. He probably has little interest in or patience with the political mudpit.
4. He probably has a great deal of interest in wielding the power of the U.S. government.
5. He would rather be a powerful actor, not just an advisor or advocate on climate change.
6. The governmental challenge of dealing with climate change is a highly cross-functional (meaning cross-Cabinet) activity, which will require massive reorganization and redeployment of resources.
7. He - perhaps more than anyone else - grasps the challenges and opportunities of governmental reorganization (this was one of his major VP responsibilities).

Seating them under these circumstances would be the moral equivalent of announcing last summer that there would be NO campaigning ANYWHERE in America, but that all the primaries and caucuses would vote together on an agreed date... and that would be it.
All that money that has gone into campaigning could have gone into the general election fund.
Hell... why even put it there?
Under this logic, no one need campaign in the general either... we could all just go to the polls in November after a quiet year watching Congress on CSPAN.

The deep point that I think we must take from this is that it was his closeness to and knowledge of the Clintons (along, of course, with his regard for Obama) that informed his decision.
Richardson also apparently felt the burdens of "friendship" and "past favors owed", but shed them both in his commitment to do what is "best for the country."
This was a heartfelt endorsement of Obama and a deeply felt repudiation of the Clintons.
Neither of which will be missed by the superdelegates.

As he made very clear, Bill Richardson did not "ignore" his history with the Clintons, but rather deeply considered it.

A few facts:
1. Al Gore's stewardship of the climate change and environmental challenge is unassailable.
2. For him, most of the duties and challenges of the Presidency would in fact be distractions from the critical role that he can play in this most important issue.
3. He probably has little interest in or patience with the political mudpit, most of which he would avoid as a VP pick.
4. He probably has a great deal of interest in wielding the power of the U.S. government.
5. He would rather be a powerful actor, not just an advisor or advocate on climate change.
6. The governmental challenges of dealing with climate change and the envionvent is a highly cross-functional (meaning cross-Cabinet) activity, which will require massive reorganization and redeployment of resources.
7. He - perhaps more than anyone else - grasps the challenges and opportunities of governmental reorganization (this was one of his major VP responsibilities).
8. The way has been paved - by his own Vice-Presidency and, ironically and tragically, that of Dick Cheney - for unprecedented power in this Constitutional role.
9. Gore's political motivations - as Vice President - would be above reproach.
10. Obama and Gore would be a completely unstoppable ticket, able to win by an historical margin: the necessary "governing majority" which Obama and Gore would be best positioned, motivated, and capable of maintaining and leading.
Conclusion:
Al Gore... for Vice President.
Obama/Gore.
