'Mission Accomplished' Anniversary: NYT Celebrates With Panel Who Largely Got It Wrong

it just underlines the truth that on a policy level no one's mind will change; and therefore; the situation will not change. the times is showing the press the way: the next eight years of middle east war will be conducted- odds on- by a democrat who will sincerely believe he or she is "against the war". under the democratic president who is against the war, the causualties and slaughter will continue without interruption as the new president plays games with minor adjustment to troop levels. this will be the mirror image of the vietnam shuffle, where a republican failed to end the vietnam war after the democrat left in disgrace. this year the democrats will expand armed conflict after a republican has been disgraced. sorry obillaries. have fun now because both your candidates are committed to expanding hostilities in iraq and afghanistan. they have already told you they will refuse to withdraw american forces. so when the rest of the press follows the times' lead in rehabilitating the new democrat war; then all the obillaries can suit up and go like they've been telling the neocons they should do. posted 05/05/2008 at 15:07:17

McCain's Reverends Right: His Faustian Bargain with Radical Christianity

easy fourex... i support barack obama. i support rev wright's basic critique of american foreign policy. i simply suggest that attacking evangelists may be counterproductive tactically- that it may lose votes. i haven't seen an actual televisable video showing a white evangelist saying "god damn america" and talking about deserving 9/11. by "clips" i literally mean broadcast video like we have of wright. maybe there is video of hagee or falwell saying god damn america and that. i just haven't see it.
I AGREE THAT RIGHT WING EVANGELISTS IMPLICITLY CONDEMN THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. with guilt theology and teaching acceptance of being poor. and taking poor peoples' money. i just think with the kind of people barack needs to reach, swearing at america BY NAME is a different shock level than even hagee blaming sin for katerina. posted 05/05/2008 at 17:33:26
from the extreme left, i have to recognize that hagee's attacks on homosexuals, catholics, et al. just dont inhabit the same "fighting words" terrain as wright's viral video attacks on america. they just don't have that impact among the broad swathe of mid-american voters. many of these voters agree with hagee about gays. how many agree with wright about america? (i'm just trying to be pragmatic here. i agree with wright, although i reject his rhetoric.) posted 05/05/2008 at 10:00:33
as i read this i am listening to stephanie miller, air america, on the same points. i'm obviously no mccain apologist. i have to briefly express an honest opinion, however, that the attack on mccain through rev hagee is not getting traction with voters and may be very damaging to democrats if it's pursued. i say this because rev wright attacked the COUNTRY with his comments. but there are no clips of hagee emotionally haranguing against the country. failure to identify disloyalty to the country as the lethal element of wright's harangue is a symptom of the notorious democratic cultural tin ear.
i believe if obama had condemned the rhetoric but distilled wright's point of criticism from his tone and language; he could have made it a foreign policy talking point. but dumping wright wholesale under pressure made a negative impression that mccain's fundie associations can't attain. posted 05/05/2008 at 09:33:31

i don't see what the problem is. we may have already won (check krauthammer or kristol). the only problem will be how to explain to liberals why- even though we've won- it doesn't look that way. and we have to learn our lesson. it doesn't do any good to say we'll stay for 100 years until after we declare we've already won. once the public believes we've already won;no one will object to continuing to spend money and take casualties.
(the actual fact is: when we've won- there is liquor. when the taliban have won- no liquor- just like basra.) a really stacked female military analyst on one of the networks would be interesting- as long as there was no odd torture baggage on her service record. she could wear a field jacket and report from somewhere. posted 05/03/2008 at 14:39:15

Five Years After "Mission Accomplished"

it would be a mistake to associate chimpler's appearance in combat drag and the "mission accomplished" banner with the actual war. the event belongs purely in the realm of public relations. for instance, the aircraft carrier was just off coronado, california, thousands of miles from the theater of conflict. they didn't get it quite right. this is why now all political candidates appear in front of flags and flag displays so gigantic and conspicuous that they are visible from outer space. this has somewhat mollified the critics, although hillary in front of the vast panapoly of red and white stripes looks like a pitchman keyed into a bacon commercial. posted 05/02/2008 at 19:39:59

Democrats And Fox News Play Nice

big news business again on schedule with it's only agenda in any election: squeezing out progressive candidates and driving the left to the center. that's their job. health care reform is gone, big investors are out of the mortgage con clean. there will be no energy policy with any inconvenience to big oil; the military continues to run a protection racket based on militant goat-herders- a nice year's work. thanks newtorks and cablemouths, another job well done. now the survivors are free to go hard right in the name of "reagan democrats"; i.e., blue collar republicans. (since the democrats cannot psychologically acommodate the notion of blue collar republicans, they invent the term "reagan democrats". ) the point isn't that they shun progressive media like amy goodman and mark greene. it is rather that it doesn't make any difference that they talk to fox instead.
the next task is to paint the hard right as centrist accommodating and tolerant- now that they are out of power. big news business and corporate democrats now need to shield the right from the bush contagion. they need to stamp out any implication that progressive anti-war policies have been vindicated. hillary and the newly chastened centrist obama stand ready to do their part. posted 05/02/2008 at 10:02:50

Five Years Ago: How the Media Gushed Over "Mission Accomplished"

this is proof the above mentioned and other press commentators are incompetent to address the ethical implications of american politics and policy: because they can be shilled like ten year olds by anything vaguely military. still, they, like congressbeings, cannot control their bodily functions- much less their composure- in the presence of their military gods. they were even reduced to children before the planted brass pentagon shills that were deployed to explain the war to them under guise of being independent analysts. the mainstream press and its opinion commentators have no status to address any aspect of political or policy development that involves the application of ethics philosophy.
but since this was an awol national guard ninny from the prairie whose dad bought him the presidency and not an actual pilot, and since this was a phoney event off california- not in the theater of war; knowing, intentional propaganda complicity by MSM can be presumed- as it can in view of the militarism of the subsequent war coverage. so the MSM is best understood as the propaganda arm of the oligarchic american state. this arm confuses people because MSM can go tough on a variety of "candidates", creating the key illusions of "objectivity" and "independence", because several political options always exist within the overall oligarchic power structure. the more bitter the rivalry between these "candidates"; the stronger the oligarchic structure becomes. posted 05/03/2008 at 10:12:10

Reading The Pictures: Taking On Ayers, Etc.

this campaign season must at all costs remain safely beneath a cogent discussion of the ethics of american foreign policy. at no time, under no circumstances, can logical thought be permitted to take precedence over the service records of the participants. much like the pennsylvania bowling-hunting weenies; the effeminate sensibilities of the patriopaths cannot under any circumstances be bruised by frank elucidation of the inherent racism implicit in US foreign policy. it is imperative that any candidate's slightest deviation from simpleminded flagsucking at any point- however distant in the past- precipitate baboon howls and terror-sweat from the land of the brave. i just want to know how experienced people like russert could think begging for votes in the appalacian ravines full of junked appliances could take the form of a "national discussion of race". Is This Primary Irreversibly Shredding the Democratic Party? I'm Skeptical.

democrats do politics- not policy. they remain well within their comfort zone. john mccain does not really interest democrats. neither of the candidates is interested in diverting attention to mccain when other democrats are so much more interesting. the strategy is to ignore mccain until he is elected; then carp about all the right-wing policies the usual democrat senate gasbags will be going along with thereafter. much to their immense relief, the mccain victory they are preparing for will again let them off the hook on health care, NAFTA, the war, and what have you. the challenge: barack and hillary defining each other negatively enough to assure that no republican policy catastrophe can derail mccain. they are making headway: they have finally clarified that they are lying about ending NAFTA and the war. they may be only one more hillary combat story- or obama outrage against exquisite redeneck sensitivity- away from their goal. god knows the party itself has done what it could: the late convention, the florida and michigan debacles- and the fact that their two survivors split the party along race and class clean as a razor while the mortgage con men blew by them like they were painted on a wall. those who grope for some rationale are already back to the "keep obvious social darwinists off the court" canard. looks like a 4 year rainy afternoon with gramps and the war stories . posted 04/25/2008 at 03:07:25

on the other hand, there's poor britney, floundering in the "mall-hick gene pool". so unlike marilyn monroe, who got out by marrying older, successful guys. poor britney, along with her friends, is despised for living within her own culture instead of seeking status from established men. all britney and her friends have is worldwide adulation that small time candidates can't even imagine. they are maybe the only popular americans in the world (certainly by far the most popular). at least it wasn't obama who used the phrase "mall-hick gene pool". back when the historcal colossus that was john edwards cast his mighty shadow of significance across western civilization, paris was the object of contempt by the Serious Intellectuals. it says it all that the democrats think they need to go bowling and hunting to reach the people - while insulting the most popular americans in the world. posted 04/19/2008 at 12:10:21

the co-optation of the country's symbols and their subsequent use as identity insignia is common exclusionary fascist practice. barack knows it's a a fascist identifier but can't say so. the answer to your above questions is "yes". the flag pin makes you "patriotic"- not what you do. the pin says you subscribe to a single state of mind defined by the fascist state. the actions which you suggest are more significant do not accomplish that. posted 04/18/2008 at 11:46:33

Unforced Error: Obama as San Fran Liberal Elitist

i hear ya loud and clear, san francisco: no apologies for being cutting edge and capable of processing sophisticated observations. 2c? i'm sick of reagan democrat whining from the rust belt. they voted cultural fears instead of sticking by their unions and they got hosed by the capitalists. too bad. i don't really need anybody in particular to be president . i'm beyond those reprocussions in every way. if white mid-america decided to vote for people who sold out their industries because they pandered to "values", they need to know that has real consequences; and they are now suffering those. no, i don't know how to make them vote liberal, though i would expect economic desparation to do that soon. but i do know they have to learn to make common cause across racial and cultural lines and maybe grow up if they are going to stop losing ground. posted 04/14/2008 at 02:52:35

It Takes Real Chutzpah for a Guy Who Owns Eight Houses (McCain) to Call Barack Obama an "Elitist"

a good number of white americans abandoned their union solidarity and jobs first ethos to follow their cultural values to the republican right. black americans, traditionally very strong christians, nevertheless stayed with a party that advanced women's rights, gay rights, academic freedom, artistic expression and liberal immigration. the white middle class is under tremendous pressure because the republican way has turned out to be prosperity for the rich and decline for everyone else. but taking responsibility for their own decisions- a trait they're supposed to value- is really too much to expect of them. so they blame others who made different choices. it is very comforting for them to have a like-minded president. they need that. and it's not like the democratic alternative is the next fdr or anything. i'm not going to worry about it if they keep crowning these twits, professional veterans, geriatrics, and con men who pander to them. i'm beyond their disastrous influence and i don't really care if they get kicked around in countries they have no business in. in our reflective moments i know we reject returning the rabid hatred they express toward academia and the creative arts. if you add up the fast food, sports worship, and laughable pseudomilitary vehicles that comprise their lives- the sum isn't exactly barack obama. it's what they have; they need what they have. i don't need a president like me the way they do. change inhabits history- not politics anyway. liberals are disingenuous about that. posted 04/14/2008 at 18:06:51
researcher, could you step into my office please? we need to work on your pandering skills. you seem to obstinately forget that this is about sucking up to morons. i think you're- may i put it precisely- clinging to the truth- perhaps bitterly. i refer to the truth that the people who really look down on white midamerica are the ones who feel the need to protect it from analytical reflections on their declining living standard- not those who offer thoughtful reflections in good faith.
you see, researcher, the objective of the fascists is to cut the dialogue off at the pass by empowering the complete yayhoos, rushbo's, hannitary napkins, dittoballs, and what have you; at the expense of those white midamericans who thirst for a dialogue on class, status, and economic recovery. the fascists want to cut those middle americans out of the dialogue. they have succeeded again because democrats aren't smart or brave any more. posted 04/14/2008 at 10:20:52

in parts of southern california, aging female comedians keep scores of young men chained in cubicles, forcing them to make up jokes and feeding them nothing but coffee for weeks. they sometimes venture out in extremely small cars that cause crooked bone development. they are occasionally seen in their trademark glasses and dockers pants trying to purchase small sundries with actual cash, confusing the locals to no end. . they don't talk about their constricted lives because they have such bad breath. the state of california refuses to step in until there are enough jobs in the motor vehicles bureau to absorb them. it's appalling. the main agnostic denominations turn a blind eye, fearing confrontation with some of the very powerful matriarchs involved. the utter absense of any sexual component whatsoever can be axiomatically presumed, leaving the authorities powerless to intervene. public awareness is building, however; as the botched deliveries, soft timing and gems edited out draw attention to these horrendous conditions in what- before the new washington took hold- was the funniest place in the world. posted 04/12/2008 at 14:53:46

for atienne and pa... you are an american and you belong. you have a right to insure the well being of your families through all legal means, even to the extent of changing the law. the rich used political leverage to displace you as labor with cheap overseas labor. they pursued their interests to the exclusion of all else- to the exclusion of pennsylvania, ohio, and the rest of america.
you have the right to also pursue your best interests. your best interests are to organize, support and vote for laws that inure to you the full benefits of your labor- not just your jobs. you are free to legislate an end to job exports and cheap imports. you are free to tax the beneficiaries of your downfall to extreme levels that divert these profits to social benefit.
but your well-being has to be your sole interest. you have to give up flag-waving, racial and religious issues, war issues, soundbyte games., and all else but your economic interests. only if you ignore flag, war, gay, and god issues can you unite. if you are not told your taxes will ruin the country, you are bad for the "free market" , you dishonor the troops, and world depression will result from protectionism- you are not doing it right. these criticisms are a sign you are doing right and becoming effective. posted 04/12/2008 at 11:44:47

beyond obama for a minute: what rust belters need to do is vote for the candidate who will do the most for the health, education, and well-being of their families. period. you need to vote for a candidate who will redistribute a significant portion of the income of the very rich to fund social initiatives that help you. forget the free market- that's how you got here, REAGAN democrats. you are not in any daisy chain fantasy free market. you are a wage earner at best. it's time to act like it and reorganize around YOUR ECONOMIC INTERESTS PERIOD- TO THE EXCLUSION OF ALL ELSE, . it is fairly difficult to ignore war, the flag, religion, the troops, gays, your gun, and what have you but you need to do that. you are entitled to your self interest, which is a society of strong egalitarian protective institutions that help people. your puny ira doesn't make your interests the same as limbaugh's. it all started with your votes for nixon and reagan, whom they're still trying to sell to you in the grave. just vote for what's good for YOU- NOT FOR THE COUNTRY- that's a shell game. VOTE FOR YOUR FAMILY AND FORGET EVERYTHING ELSE. somebody wants to give you free education and health care- VOTE FOR HIM. don't listen to some punk working some phobia about big government. think like the people who gave you the 40-hour week , social security and public education. not some radio windbag. posted 04/12/2008 at 11:00:05
these midwestern and eastern industrial cities were ok when the voted their immediate economic interests and put their unions first. but they bet wrong on the vietnam war, supporting the war and electing nixon. nixon conned them with a law and order smokescreen, and contempt for students and anti-war people. then he opened up china and laid the job hemmorage groundwork. after gas got short and the ayatollah took the hostages; they voted patriotism and got screwed again. the very first thing reagan did in office was bust the air traffic controllers union. then the big money told them it was really wonderful for all to ship jobs overseas. the pinch started- they bet wrong again. they voted anti-gay and gun issues and pro-life instead of what put food on the table and produced a paycheck.
in other words- they're fools. they took the fdr legacy of their wise grandfathers and squandered it. threw it away for comfortable bigotry, flag sucking, and war cheerleading.. they were always so superior to student protestors. they had so much contempt for hippies and students. but i can't be glad they're paying for it because the whole country is involved. they will now be thrown off their social issues by soundbytes to vote for a war that's killing them. because johnny is screwing around in somebody else's country as usual, they will ignore all their social issues and vote for more war capitalism. so they deserve what they're getting. posted 04/12/2008 at 09:28:42
