The Struggle To Define Barack Obama

A white man with an extremely thin resume and associations with far right extremists has already been elected president twice now. posted 07/08/2008 at 09:26:51
And that's his primary weakness right now. Most voters haven't known him for a long time, so it's easy to pull things out of context in order to paint him as a radical socialist.

Obama needs to establish some "centrist cred" in order to win this election. Otherwise, voters will start to buy the GOP spin that he's a radical terrorist lover. posted 07/08/2008 at 09:19:15
Obama is following a classic campaign strategy: Court the base in the primary, then run like hell towards the center for the general election.

I don't expect Obama to be perfect or even to agree with 100% of his actions. I do, however, have to be realistic. We have two viable choices now: Him or McCain. So, yes, I will vote for Obama because he's the only candidate left for which there's even a possibility of him reversing the disasters of the past 8 years. posted 07/08/2008 at 08:55:46
It's not a question of If but when.

Actually, it's not even a question anymore. Hillary already laid the groundwork for a racial attack on Obama. The GOP is already picking up where she left off. posted 07/08/2008 at 08:50:41

If the Bush and the GOP truly wanted to eliminate Roe, they could have pushed for a constitutional amendment defining life as beginning at conception or restoring the power of state's outlaw abortion if they want to. Granted, in today's political climate, such an amendment is unlikely to get ratified. But if this was truly a matter of principle for the GOP, they would make the stand anyway.

But they won't because they know abortion is a useful wedge issue, just like gay marriage. Having abortion legal is more of a benefit for them than actually "solving" the problem by outlawing it. For one thing, it helps them in grass roots organization and fundraising. In another, it helps them garner support for appointing more far-right judges like Scalia and Thomas. posted 07/03/2008 at 16:08:51

Okay, we all know that the religious extremists like Strang and Franklin Graham will vote for McCain because he mouths the right words about abortion and gays and those are the only issues they care about.

At the same time, it's amusing for them to try and get Obama to mouth the right words of faith when we know they have no intention of ever supporting him no matter what he says.

What's got to be frustrating for them is that, unlike Bill Clinton, Obama has no "bimbo eruptions" to worry about. Here we have a man who, by all appearances, is a loving and faithful husband and father. While his opponent is a man who dumped his first wife because she had a disability and gained weight.

If we must apply a morals test to the presidential race, there's no question who would win. Of course, we know the last thing Strang and Graham want to do is ask which man is actually living the precepts of his faith and which one is just giving it lip service. posted 07/03/2008 at 14:32:25

US Using Communist Torture Techniques At Guantanamo

How do you know the difference between those who give up accurate information under torture and those who have a stronger resistance and make stuff up to confuse you?

Torture DOES NOT work. Ask real experts on interrogation and stop reading garbage from cowards like Bill Kristol and Sean Hannity. posted 07/02/2008 at 21:13:05
Torture has been proven time and again that it is not an effective way to get ACCURATE information. It coerces people into saying whatever the torturer wants them to say, regardless of whether or not it is true. Victims of torture will start making up names and dates and other details just in the hopes the the torturer will stop.

And the "ticking bomb" scenario exists only on episodes of 24.

Judges Criticize Government's Evidence To Hold Guantanamo Detainees

I realize this is a tough concept for wingnuts to swallow, but criticizing the government is not the same thing as hating America. Read Payne or Jefferson's writings. Criticizing the government is the patriotic duty of every American.

I love this country. I love it so much that it pains me to see her ideals twisted into some kind of perversity just to serve the venal interests of a single administration. A real patriot doesn't just meekly follow the leadership when they want to take the nation over a cliff. A real patriot stands up and proclaims that the American ideals are much more important than any single administration. posted 07/01/2008 at 08:59:09
This whole farce is symptomatic fo a mindset that has infested our government since 9/11. It's the idea that if only we could collect enough data and round up enough suspects, we would be safe. So, the focus as been to collect data on everything (unwarranted wiretaps) and detain anyone a bounty hunter tells us is a terrorist.

The fallacy of this argument has been shown time and time again. 99% of the information picked up in broad-based monitoring of emails and phones turns out to be useless clutter that just wastes time and resources to sift through. Likewise, these kind of dragnet sweeps pick up to many people who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. But, rather than admit to a mistake, our government has just press on until they get their butts handed to them in court. posted 07/01/2008 at 08:49:55
