The Evangelical Swing Vote

Eight years ago, my partner and I moved to a new neighborhood, partly because of homophobic harrassment we had received in our home of 19 years.

We had a bit of trepidation about the fact that our back yard bordered the property of an Evangelical Church with a nursery school and playground, so we immediataly put up a 6-foot fence to avoid problems.

Well, bit by bit, we have had to talk to the Pastor of the church about neighborhood issues, and we have never found him and his congregation to be anything but good neighbors. Sure, they know we're gay. But it was the Pastor who offered the church property for us to do our daily walk (recommended to all us old geezers by our doctors) when he heard my partner had a neuro-muscular disease and was afraid to walk too far from home. Now we get hellos from all of the church members who see us on the property.

It took us a while, but we came to realize these Evangelicals were no more rabidly far-Right political than Methodists or Episcopalian. posted 05/16/2008 at 12:01:41

Electing Sweetie

"left has been far more brutal to Hillary then the 'rightwingers ever were.

Hardly. Please review your history. Or go to freerepublic dot com and search for Hillary.

And "sweetie" as brutality? No, I have another explanation. I am a gay male, and I have called my partner "sweetie" for 27 years. Every once in a while, I am in an animated conversation with another man or a woman, it doesn't matter which, and "sweetie" slips out, force of habit. If it's a straight man, I am pretty mortified. If it's a woman or a gay man, they usually just smile at my own embarrassment.

I think that's what happened to Barrack, Tootsie. posted 05/16/2008 at 12:20:47

I really appreciate your column. Although I see many of your stories on responsible sections of the blogosphere, there are others that I miss.

The Mad Cow story is particularly galling and should be picked up elsewhere. First we are told that we don't need government regulation, because industry can self-regulate. Then, when industry tries to self-regulate, the government agencies responsible for regulation actively prevent it from doing so. Welcome to the Republican nightmare! In addition, of course, the balance of trade, already severely out of balance, is tipped further by making Unitedstatesian products unacceptable abroad! Brilliant! posted 05/16/2008 at 13:12:19

McCain and the Courts

"No, a judge doesn NOT have to glean the meaning of ambiguous language from somewhere other than the Constitution. "

The Constitution, my friend, does not explain the ambiguous language of a law written in 2008. The law would most likelly contain words that were not even in the English language when the Constitution was framed. You seem to miss the point that a major part of judicial duties has ALWAYS been interpretation of the meaning of the words of a law, and that to do that other sources, a dictionary perhaps, and certainly the decisions of judges in the past, must be used.

You are confusing this task with that of determining the "constitutionality" of the law.

You are also missing the point that conservative judges have been every bit as eager (perhaps more so) to "legislate from the bench" as have liberals. It is their politics that are different. posted 05/13/2008 at 12:58:37

Many people aren't interested in facts or reality. That's why they are told that they must believe by faith alone. posted 05/05/2008 at 09:09:02
"the difference between ATTENDING a church for 20 years and a strictly POLITICAL alliance. "

You mean the difference between sitting in a pew and giving someone an active role in government? posted 05/05/2008 at 08:05:32
"America was founded in part with the intention of seeing this false religion destroyed""

This doesn't question the very foundation of the country? Yet the basis for Wright's questioning--the inhuman slave trade--has indeed been questioned before, by Lincoln among others. posted 05/05/2008 at 07:38:34
It's not a "distraction", my friend. It is a HIT JOB. An attempt to make Americans "vote with their gut" and ignore the real issues and real crises that our country faces.

Maybe Obama misworded it, but his "bitter" comment and later explanation were right on. People's lives are miserable and getting worse? Hit them with gun rights, abortion, the homosexual boogey man, get their votes, pick their pockets, and they are none the wiser. posted 05/05/2008 at 07:34:03
It's Hollywood. I must say, when I watch the old movies on Turner, I am delighted at the lack of a constant musical score telling the audience what emotion to feel at any given moment. They relied on writing, acting, and directing. Do you know that Hitchcock's "The Birds" has NO musical score? But turn on any recent movie, and the music often drowns out the dialogue, even during intimate scenes. These pastors have learned the technique. posted 05/05/2008 at 07:29:56
Obama did not bring Rev. Wright into the political fray. Fox News and the Republican "Liberal" press did with the obvious intention of scaring white voters with constant images of an angry Black man.

McCain has groveled before these hateful bigots and put them on display. But does the average American know about them? Will the average American ever know about them? Not until they get their own 24/7 video tape loops on all the news channels, and that is not likely to happen. After all, they are only angry White men. What's entertaining about that? posted 05/05/2008 at 07:25:09

Rove's Next Trick -- If Obama Must Answer For His Minister Now, Just Wait to See What the Republicans Will Do To Clinton Inc. in October

We are not talking fairness here. We are talking Karl Rove.

All that chit about McCain will be squelched. Even his the illegitimate Black daughter that Rove discovered in 2000 [ ! ] posted 05/05/2008 at 10:02:02

The New Karl Rove: Sidney Blumenthal (And Hillary Is in Bed with Both of Them)

In that case, I apologize for my comment (just below). But your choice of words seems to have mislead several people. Okay, we're all a little testy right now. And it is going to last till August. Aaaaargh! Can't they just move the convention up a month or two and get it over with? posted 05/05/2008 at 13:04:54
cook... maid... chauffeur... gardener... hmm... Barack was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. Are you suggesting a change of profession? Not bringing race into it are we? posted 05/05/2008 at 12:57:42
