Obama Spokesman Responds To Iraq 'Faux Flip-Flop' Story

I don't see this one as a flipflop. Who knows what pile of steaming mess GWB will leave to Obama. On Jan 20, when he gets that Top Secret briefing and finds out how badly the war really has been run, he may decide we can't get out as quickly as he wants.

But there's NO NEED TO SAY THAT NOW!!! How many votes did he gain by saying this?

Added to his flipflop on FISA and his stunning embrace of Bush's funding religious organizations and you start to get a new narrative: Barack is Hillary... i.e. he will say anything to win. It's getting harder to "believe" in his "change".

Moral of the story: you don't have to defend flipflops you dont' make in the first place.

The campaign needs to stop changing its message. It seems like the two Davids are off on vacation and Mark Penn has been put on the payroll.

There's only thing worse than pandering: pandering that doesn't work. posted 07/07/2008 at 14:08:08

Obama Tries and Fails to Put Out the FISA Fire in His Own House

I am an Obama delegate to the national convention in Denver. i have worked hard for him since Feb 2007. i have donated the max for the primary ($2300), traveled to 5 states besides my own, and spent my winter "vacation" campaigning for him in SC. I was happy to do all of it, and so happy when he won the nomination.

But now I feel like I need to paraphrase Obama on Jeremiah Wright: "This isn't the man I've known for the past 20 months." Barack keeps moving closer to the sort of person that never would have inspired me to do anything. And his flip response is that this may be a deal broker for some, "and that's ok."

The great news is that there is no law that requires that I continue giving my time and money. For the moment I continue to give some of the former -- though not as generously as before -- and none of the latter. When Obama becomes the man I knew, I will open my checkbook again. If he fails to do so, well that's $2300 I can put to better use. If he moves further to the right, those are more weekends and evenings I can spend with my friends and family or just doing something fun for myself.

Get it together, Senator. Otherwise, you are looking at a single term. As GWB famously said "Fool me once..... can't get fooled again." posted 07/06/2008 at 18:50:57

I hope we're not on our way to saying "Obama is the lesser of two evils." If he keeps this up and manages to win, he'll *have* to take public financing the next time around. All of his "fired up and ready to go" supporters will hang on to their $20-50 a month. posted 07/04/2008 at 22:31:15

Rove Refuses To Testify On U.S. Attorney Scandal

They should put his ass in chains and throw him the deepest, darkest, dankest dungeon.

Unfortunately, none of that matters, as Bush will grant him a giant sized pardon, as he did for Scooter. The Congress can do nothing to anybody so long as Bush has the pardon power.

Which is why it must impeach and remove him and Cheney. It's that, or sit back and let the boy doofus do whatever he wants until jan 20, 2009. Congress needs to find its balls and use them, or stop pretending like they have any.

I applaud Conyers and know that he'd love to ship Rove off to Guantanamo. But there's nothing any of them can do so long as they are unwilling to remove the war criminals from the Presidency. (And you gotta do both simultaneously.)

Which means they will do nothing. Conyers can huff and puff and threaten to blow Rove's house down -- or anyone's for that matter -- but none of it means anything. posted 07/04/2008 at 01:37:33

Obama May Cut Dem Convention Short

Exactly right. What is the point? He could make a great speech from some important campaign location instead. it would be a better use of campaign money. Besides, why should 5,000+ people spend the money on travel and hotel and take off a week of work for this? It makes it available only to a rather select few who can afford te money and time teo go..... that money and time would be much better spent on contributions to the campaign. posted 07/03/2008 at 10:23:44

Seven Things Barack Obama Should Do to Keep from Blowing It

Right on. If Obama tries to dance with all these folks who didn't want to dance with him, don't want to dance now, and aren't going to dance no matter how much he panders, the army he has awakened will feel its hope slipping away, shrug its shoulders, and wearily go home. If they go back to their couches, they won't get off them again for at least another generation.

If Obama continues this present course of flip-flopping, pandering and becoming a Republican he will find himself waking up shortly after Denver wondering where all of his supporters went. Wondering where the money went. "We were raking in over a million a day.....what the hell happened?" he and the two Davids will ask each other. By then it will be too late, and we'll do end up doing what Democrats do best -- losing an election in which John McCain shouldn't have a chance.

Then again, i was saying the same kinds of things last fall, when Obama's #s were tanking, when he wasn't hitting back hard like I thought he should. "Why won't this guy get in the game?" I asked myself. "Is he ever gonna get off the bench?" It made me nervous and angry.

This feels a lot like that. I was wrong then. i hope I'm wrong now. I hope they know what they're doing. posted 07/02/2008 at 18:57:55

Remember who programs and owns the voting machines... that are chock full of secret programming code no one is allowed to look at. Not to mention outright voter fraud (remember those robocalls "Dems vote on Wednesday" or "blacks vote on Wednesday") Never underestimate the ability of Republicans to steal an election.

Kos Upset With Obama, Withholds Contribution

Kos you are right on. And let's add "faith based initiatives" to the list. Christ, I'm holding my breath waiting to hear him say "the Iraq war isn't such a bad thing.... let's stay for awhile."

I gave Obama the max of $2300 during the primary -- not in one big check to some fancy dinner, I wasn't mentally there yet, having never given money to a campaign before -- but in smaller and then larger increments over the 16 month primary. I'm definitely an Obamamaniac if you want to use that term.

But now I'm also astonished. And I too am holding on to my checkbook. Whether I start writing again depends in large part on whether he gets back on track -- and by that I mean living up to his own rhetoric -- and who he picks for VP. If he picks Sam Nunn, forget it. I won't send him another penny.

As kos said, others will probably pick up the slack and he won't miss my dollars. But I wonder how many other people are feeling the same way, how many of us grassroots, firsttimers, who have given so much time and energy to this campaign, looked at Plouffe's "midnight deadline" email and quoted our hero silently to ourselves: "not this time."

It hurt not to answer that call. But Barack is not being the candidate I put my heart, soul and money behind. He's becoming the sort of politician that made me stay uninvolved. posted 07/02/2008 at 08:54:16

Obama On FISA: Security Trumps Suing Phone Companies

Professor Obama, your Constitutional law class is giving you a failing grade!

No one is holding you to any crazy leftwing standards -- we are holding you to your own standards, to your promise. and more importantly, to the job description you want to have: "to preserve, protect, and defend" the Constitution. If you won't do it now, why should anyone believe you'll do it in office? Are you going to get in there and grant immediate pardons to Bush and Cheney too?

My advice to Obama supporters is to hold on to your wallets. Keep that $20 you were going to send in. Put it toward your mortage or in the gas tank instead. The Obama campaign is used to a million dollars a day pouring in. When that stream of cash slows to a trickle, they will remember the principles that created the movement that put them where they are now.

They are in danger of becoming as arrogant as Hillary was, assuming this is now a coronation. They need to remember that this is a campaign funded "by the people" as Barack says, and guess what? If "the people" don't like a Presidential candidate who is already taking scissors to the Constitution, we have the power to pull our support and leave you high and dry.

p.s. how am I supposed to explain this position to my friends and family who are not yet Obama supporters? What's the talking point supposed to be? posted 06/26/2008 at 08:49:13

Sustainable Democratic Convention Challenges Organizers

These conventions seem like a huge waste of time, money, and resources. The only thing that truly has to happen is that delegates cast their votes for the nominee -- officially, legally, etc. That could be by fax or some other means that costs very little. However, I'm going as an Obama delegate, so I'll let you know if it really is a big waste of time.

Why am I going? Because back when delegates were being chosen Hillary was making noises about maybe trying to steal Obama's pledged delegates, and she was talking about going all the way to Denver.. (oops. we're not supposed to bring up things like that anymore.) I wanted to be sure that whoever went could not be persuaded to flip her way at the convention. That's why I ran for delegate. Obama Asks Donors To Help Clinton With Campaign Debt

Let every person who voted for Hillary send her $1.25. 18 million x $1.25 will pay off her debt.

See how easy that was? Tell me that even those hard-working white people in rural Appalachia can't spare a buck twenty-five for their queen. Send her $2 each and she'll have a great start on her Senate race.

Hagel: I'd Consider VP Offer From Obama

I'm starting to think that the Obama campaign is letting these unappetizing choices (Hagel, Nunn, Hillary) float out there so that whoever they end up picking makes people say "whew! that's so much better than...." There isnt' anyone who can match Barack for appeal, so anyone he picks is probably going to be a huge disappointment. But by letting lots of bad choices sit out there, whoever he does pick looks so much better by comparison that people will be happy with it.

Obama Backs Bill Giving Immunity To Telecoms

This is poor judgment, Senator.

Longtime Obama supporter here, and one of his delegates to the national convention. This vote, combined with the possible pick of Sam Nunn for VP, is making me hold on to my checkbook for a little while.

It seems I'm not alone. As great as $22 million is for May, it's actually down for him. He was pulling in more than $1 million per day for several months.

He needs to remember to do the right thing, which is why people have been behind him. Compromise is fine, but let it happen before the bill is voted on. He can't start caving in now, like a typical Dem.

This also shows why Obama needed to run now, not 8 years from now. By then his record would be full of votes like this. The Senate doesn't get to vote on clean bills for which a yes/no vote fully reflects their views. They usually end up voting on a mess, some of which they're for, some against. Which means explaining is always required, which makes you look weak.

But giving telecoms immunity seems like too large a price to pay to get the FISA courts back -- esp. when GWB ignores the law, and will ignore these courts, anyway. posted 06/21/2008 at 01:07:33

Obama Considering World Tour Ahead Of August Convention

This is a great idea as long as his security can be assured. It's also good, frankly, to give the American public a break from an election that has been going on for a year and a half. Give us some breathing room to go back to our normal lives for 5 seconds.

Both candidates are having trouble coming up with something new to say. I'm an Obama diehard, but the speeches I hear lately are largely the same as they were 6 months ago. There is only so much new you can say about what you would do for the country before you get to have a go at it. (Imagine interviewing for the same job 10,000 times. How much new stuff could you come up with by the end?)

A foreign trip would breathe new life into the Obama stump speech. It would let the rest of the world see this guy Americans are so gaga over, and it would give us a break from the campaign cycle.

At Clinton's Final Rally, The Scene Is More Bitter Than Sweet

I think it's so hard for Clinton supporters to accept that it's over because they assumed she would win. This was supposed to be her time. She had the Dem party machine, she had the then-most-popular Democratic President ever on her side, as part of her campaign team. Obama had to run against two Clintons for a year and a half, not just one. They had all the big money up front. This was supposed to be a cakewalk.

On the Obama side, we knew it was a long shot. We knew we weren't guaranteed anything. We didn't have the big money, or any particular advantages. We had our candidate and our enthusiasm. That was it. If Obama had not won, we'd have been disappointed, but not to the point of crying, not to the point of feeling that we would vote Republican. We didn't feel entitled, and so if we didn't win we couldn' get this upset.

The Clintons and their supporters felt they were entitled. You can hear it in callers to talk shows who say "he took this away from her," or "he stole this from her." You can't have a nomination stolen/taken from you unless you believe it was yours from the start. That's your evidence for the sense of entitlement. No other candidate had it. that's why Edwards and Richardson supporters were able to move on. That is why it's so hard to Hillary supporters to let it go. posted 06/08/2008 at 00:08:43

Yet people go on and on about the race issue, even though Obama's never made it one. While Hillary's people go on and on about someone with a vagina being President, and that's entirely acceptable.

Ultimately it came down to who was the better person, who did people trust to do what they say they'll do. More people believed Obama than believed Clinton. In the end none of it had to do with racism or sexism. Both candidates rose above such childish categories and were, in the end, judged on their own individual merits. posted 06/07/2008 at 18:11:11

Angry Clinton Supporters Start Rallying For McCain

The next President will get to pick at least one, perhaps as many as three, Supreme Court Justices. He will be replacing the liberal justices, not the conservatives. Scalia, Roberts, Thomas, and Alito are much younger than Stevens, Ginsberg, Kennedy, and Souter. The MOST we can accomplish on the Supreme Court is to maintain whatever liberalness there is. We will not get it back toward the middle. That ship sailed when GWB "won" re-election in 2004. If President Kerry had been able to replace Rehnquist and O'connor we might have moved the Court back toward th center.

So.... vote McCain into office and a few years from now you will have a Court that votes 7-2 or 8-1 in favor of every conservative case tehat comes before it. Say good-bye to Roe v. Wade, equal pay for women, the Fourth Amendment, limitations on business polluting the environment, any hope of employment non-discrimination, a secular state.....

Say hello to back alley abortions, a polluted environment, more climate change, more discimination in the workplace, a religious state.

Obama: Clinton Can Run "As Long As She Wants"

i'm tired of hillary's campaign complaining that she's losing due to sexism. ALL of the Obama supporters I know believe that we are long overdue for a woman President. We just don't believe Hillary is the right woman. That's assessing her as a person, not as a gender. If the best candidate were a woman, we'd all be supporting her. This time out, the best candidate is Barack Obama. That's assessing all of the candidates by the content of their character. posted 03/29/2008 at 22:54:10

Obama Should Think Big -- and Seat Michigan and Florida

This makes sense only if Obama gets all the delegates that Clinton did not. She "won" Florida 55-45, so he won't lose much there. She "won" Michigan 50-whatever....if he gets the other 50%, Michigan is a wash.

Where she flies past him in Florida is superdelegates. All those Congresspersons you see all over the TV arguing for "fairness" for Florida are Clinton supporters. They can't wait to give her their superdelegate votes.

Right now Florida and Michigan are playing the General Motors/Bear Stearns card (GM/Bear Stearns were too big to be allowed to fail. FL/MI are too big to risk offending them.) Their bluff needs to be called. If they do not, the state with the most votes -- California -- WILL move its primary to first place in 2012, on the theory that "we're too big to be offended in the general election -- just like Michigan and Florida." That WILL happen. You heard it here first. California's 2012 primary will be held in late December, 2011.

There must be some penalty for moving their elections forward. If there is not, the 2012 race and beyond will be completely chaotic, as EVERY state realizes they can race to the front of the line without penalty. I don't know what that penalty should be but it must something that makes states in 2012 say, "move our election forward? are you kidding? look at what happened to Florida and Michigan!" posted 03/31/2008 at 07:27:59

Chris Matthews Really Plays Hardball, Demands New Guest Name Sources For Obama Claim

it's the newest political game, Six Degrees of Barack Obama. 1. Find someone who utters hateful public statements (racist, sexist, anti-Jewish, anti-gay, anti-Keebler elves, etc.) 2.Find some way to link them to Obama, no matter how loosely or absurd. Example: Random guy at grocery store makes a racist comment. Notice that random guy has milk in his shopping cart. Do a Google search to learn that Obama also drinks milk. You're done! you have just linked this racist to Obama. See how easy that was? posted 03/29/2008 at 08:34:59

Senator Leahy To Clinton: Drop Out

Sen. Leahy is exercising his "independent judgement" as a superdelegate. This is exactly what hillary is asking all superdelegates to do, as it is the only way they can justify overruling what the people want. When that "independente judgement" doesn't go Hillary's way, her supporters are offended. Another example of Hillary Hypocracy.

What should really means is "exercise your judgement as long as it leads you to vote for me instead of Obama. And if the people of your state voted for me, well then shut up do what they want."

Talk about having it both ways. posted 03/28/2008 at 15:43:17

Chris Dodd: This Race Must End

"Irresponsible" is the key word here. That's exactly what it is to let this go on and on. Superdelegates need to grow a pair, support who they're going to, so we can get on with running against the Republicans.

If they can't face up to that responsibility, they shouldn't be superdelegates. posted 03/27/2008 at 20:41:43

Clinton Donors Object to Pelosi Comment

Hillary has been running around saying that superdelegates should exercise independent judgment, which is her way of saying "screw the people, vote for me." But as soon as one of them does -- Bill Richardson -- she is all over his ass via surrogates. James Carville should have been applauding Richardson's "independent judgement" as exactly what Hillary has been calling for.

So it looks like the real position is that "delegates should exercise independent judgement, if their state went for Obama. But if their state went for Hillary, they should go with what the voters decided."

In other words, they should always vote for Hillary. posted 03/26/2008 at 20:18:28

Perception of Electability At Stake For Obama In Coming Primaries

Rush Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos" is in full force in PA, as it was in OH and TX. He is open about this. I just heard him talking to a caller in PA who told how exciting it was to register as a Dem so he could vote for Hillary. Rush said, "didn't you feel like your vote would really count?"

This shows that:
Republicans are already attacking the candidate they are afraid is most electable: Barack Obama.
Republicans are rallying against Hillary. They find it exciting and fun. They would do the same against her as the nominee.
Hillary's support in OH, TX, PA and every remaining contest is not as high as the vote indicates, since some percentage of these voters are Rush' "agents." Their votes must be subtracted from Hillary AND added to the McCain column. If only 2% of Hillary's vote in PA is from them, there is actually net of 4 points to McCain -- enough to lose an election.

Superdelegates need to discount some of Hillary's votes in all future primaries and not buy the "electablility" argument. If they do, they are letting themselves be fooled into the Republicans' trap. posted 03/25/2008 at 13:57:54

Bill Clinton: No Revotes Deliberate Attempt To Disenfranchise Voters

You are exactly right. Hillary didn't give a damn about those voters until she lost so badly. (Her record of winning states is 14 out of 44). If she had lost Florida and Michigan, she wouldn't care any more for them than she did for voters in South Carolina, where she thumbed her nose and fled the state without so much as a thank you to the people who did support her. posted 03/24/2008 at 20:54:53

Why Did Obama Change His Name?

leaving aside the obvious non-newsworthiness of this so-called "story", it's pretty simple. Kids vary their names to whatever is cool when they're younger, and then when they grow up they often return to the more "formal"'/"adult" version. Example: "Joey" becomes "Joseph" when it's time to lead a major corporation. My friend "Angie" became "Angela" in her adult life as a singer. She told us, we got used to it. This is simply a sign of his maturity, that he didn't mind any longer standing out from the crowd with an unusual, more grownup name. Contrast this with an adult named "Scooter" Libby. posted 03/24/2008 at 00:40:59

Is Hillary Positioning for 2012?

Yes, she is.

It's now up to the superdelegates to stop the madness. Barack is clearly the nominee. They should stop letting her play as if there be overtime.

Superdelegates are the people in this country to have the most to to lose directly if the party is torn apart. They need to wise up and realize that 8 year of Obama will do more good for them and strengthen the party long term than anything else. posted 03/22/2008 at 23:14:02
