Tonight at Sam's Club in Athens, GA my curmudgeonly friend Paul Nelson overheard a "fat lady" talking on her cellphone say, "It's the smartest thing he ever did," and "he's not that old."

That's kind of how I feel, too (the first thing). A truly remarkable specimen, she is layer upon layer of Republican Ideal personified like a right wing Wonder Woman or something.

The red states love to get fired up and they love to "rah! rah! rah!" for the red team and she is going to give them all a major league hard on. We belittle her at our peril!

Well, o.k. that is my initial feeling at the end of day 1.

I agree, Vic, there is a great big chunk of voters out there who will go gaga over a candidate like Palin. She's like the Dream Girl of every redneck in America, of which, unfortunately, there are millions. Scary, really scary.

remember what Hillary reminded us about. No matter what, keep going. Keep going. Please don't let this Palin woman distract us from the goal. Keep going!!!

Whenever I have discussed my (Democratic) preference in this campaign............... I have been quick to add that I retain great personal respect for McCain personally.

During the convention....as each speaker was careful to honor McCains service in their remarks........
I joked that it was beginning to resemble the "Sienfeld" episode in which,
......whenever the fact that someone was gay was discussed all the characters would quickly add the caveat...."NOT that there's anything wrong with that!!"

And, of course there IS nothing wrong with that.....
BUT THERE IS SOMETHING VERY, VERY WRONG WITH THIS!!

In naming Ms. Palin, McCain has REFUTED every argument he can make on his own behalf when it comes to experience, judgement, temperment and patriotism.

Yes , I said .......I question the PATRIOTISM of a person who intends to try as hard as possible to put a COMPLETELY UNQUALIFIED person in a position where they will be VERY LIKELY to become the President of the United States!

Someone who loves his country would not do such a thing.

This is SO disrespectful to the American people, to women, to the millions worldwide who thirst for a renewal of at least American COMPETENCE .....and to the many other QUALIFIED candidates (imagine what Kay Baily-Hutchinson or Condoleeza Rice think of McCain's famous "patriotism" today !!!)

And ulimately,........
while I'm sure Ms. Palin and her friends and family are thrilled at the.....shall we say, gently.... UNEXPECTED honor......It is direspectful to Ms. Palin herself.

I am shocked, offended, and afraid. I can not believe that Senator McCain thinks so little of the safety of the citizens of America that he would pick an unqualified person to be his second in command. This woman could possibly have the power to make decisions that could cost all or some of us our freedoms, our security, our safety. Although I am a Democrat I followed the Republican campaigns this year as well. I can understand when people initially questioned Senator Obama. Who is he? What are his beliefs? We have had over a year to learn who he is, his beliefs, his management style, his behavior under pressure, his ability to interact with other leaders, etc. For many people one year is not enough. One year on the campaign trail and his history in public service will not do. Okay, I get it. But how on this earth can it be acceptable that with 60+ days left on the campaign trail is it acceptable for an unvetted, unknown, unqualified soccer mom to have control over the United States of America? I am not a Republican but I am sure that there are so many more qualified female Republicans with extensive resumes, thoughtful perspectives on foreign policy, domestic policy, healthcare, the economy, etc. How can anyone pretend that this cruel joke is acceptable? This is our lives, our security! Everyone is afraid to question her b/c she is a female. This is horribe.

If it's a point guard he wanted, why not Magic Johnson? Now that's a ticket I would vote for, McCain and Magic!!! 18 million cracks in the glass backboard, and they could take Obama-Biden in 2 on 2!

If you were for HRC and now are going to vote for Palin, please just leave the democratic party because you obviously have no sense of principle.

The Irony of crying foul because your candidate was mistreated for being a woman (questionable....) and then jump on the next bus that comes along because it says "Girl Power" is beyond me.

This is not a game, it is real life and the future is absolutely tied to the decisions we are preparing to make.

ALL you need to know about Palin FROM AN ALASKAN. It is all going to come out anyway so learn it here first.

Look around QUICK..the GOP is scrubbing the entire internet to shore up their story about her and things are disappearing FAST!!!!!!!

Can you say COVER-UP

This was a LAST second pick so they did not get to do it before she was picked. HURRY!!!!

GREAT link!!........confirms what some Alaskan friends told me last night.....with much more detail

They say it's hard to dislike Palin even when you know her politics are just awful

By the way, MY friends (Obamites) say Obama didn't have a CHANCE in Ak. even before the pick

Thanks to "SO CAL NICK"

Oh, goody, goody. Just what we need is an ex-soccer mom CHEERLEADER for the right wing as second in command.

This is great!! I lived in Alaska for 7 years and can't wait to see how all of this unfolds... She has reached across the aisle? DUH! Nobody in politics in Alaska expects to go anywhere else, so of course they reach across the aisle.

And her "economic" experience to go with McCain's idiocy? Alaska has had a surplus FOREVER. This is a state that gets so much money from oil revenues that they have NO SALES TAX, NO STATE INCOME TAX, and they pay every person (man, woman, child) a dividend check every year. The highest check i ever got was something like 1,200 dollars... this year, it's reportedly going to be over $3,000!!! Must be tough managing that kind of excess money.

You raised the point I thought of as soon as I heard some comments touting Palin's gubernatorial experience. Most states right now are having a terrible time trying to balance their budgets. Being able to rely on petrodollars removes the biggest conflicts (coming up with a balanced state budget) inherent in running most states.

Did Palin do all of that in 18 months or was that the status quo when she arrived on the scene. Most of the attention will be on the abuse of power that is going on in Alaska and the fact that she is a right-wing Pat Buchanan storm trooper. McCain already had the extreme right-wing vote because they had no where else to go. Unfortunately the day of Mccain's vp pick will go down in history as the day McCain lost the election. And we thank him.

Why didn't he just choose Gena Davis...at least she has CIC experience.

Priceless, does not describe this pair, the biggest mistake ever is more like it. Not good for the country and I am so happy that HRC's camp does not fall for this tactic.

Listen people!! Sympathy votes. We saw it in Mrs Clinton, now this is what they are trying to pull. Make enough stupid comments and create a false sense of getting Mrs Palin getting jumped on by us and the MSM. Lets all just let it go.Focus on our team. They saw what happened to Hillary, now they are trying to create the same effect, just to get the Reublican women and some Democract women to do the same. View it for what it is..lets just let it go
