7 Easy Ways To Make People Think You're A Millionaire

Posted: 11/09/11 09:52 AM ET

Just imagine how grand life would be if the posh club memberships, sophisticated yacht parties, and sojourns to Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and Southampton were no longer the exclusive province of the fabulously rich, but were, in fact, within reach. I believe it's possible to mingle with millionaires, party with plutocrats and enjoy the good life, all while living on a budget. If one can dream it, one can live it. And be treated like an important person too.

Before I became a professional, full-time writer, I worked in advertising. There I learned a great deal about personal branding and how to use it to get ahead in life. By branding yourself as fabulously successful even before you are a success, I think you will achieve it all the faster.

Following are seven tips to help you wing it till you cha-ching it, and most of them are free. For the rest of them, check out my book "The Millionaire's Handbook: How to Look and Act like a Millionaire, Even if You're Not."

A name can make you sound like a prince or a pauper, a businessman or a bum. Depending on its rhythm and spelling, a name can sound aristocratic, presidential, poetic or even humorous. Nicknames that sound like they belong to baseball players such as Chuck, Derek or Gordy have the potential to make you sound rich. (Top baseball stars fetch an annual salary of approximately $25 million.) Does your name convey everything you want it to--both about you and your ambitions? If not, take out a pen and paper and nickname yourself. Then start seeding your new nickname with your oldest friends on the planet.
