The Aftermath of SB1070

Posted: 06/25/2012 5:59 pm

As Arizona prepares to begin a new chapter in their epic human rights movement, a look back down the road we've traveled reveals many things about our community. I believe there is a profound education for every American in our journey; the people we are, the community we've become.

In the final analysis, things won't change much for our community. That's because SB1070 doesn't represent the beginning of our time of injustice here in AZ. It is only the continuance of things which have already come to pass. Arizona is already dealing with an unrelenting progression of anti-immigrant sentiment institutionalized by the state. First there was the "English Only" mandate in schools across the state. Then came the laws that denied access to drivers licenses, then to health care and social services. There have even been laws designed to discourage Mexican immigrants from starting their own businesses, and that's just the story of the Arizona State Legislature.

There is another story that could be told about the practical experience of people on the street. In this story, we would talk about how this spirit of intolerance in the legislature was transmitted to the streets. It manifested in the workplace when business owners refused to even consider a brown person for a job due to intimidation and pressure by hate-mongers. It manifested in the line at the grocery store, or the bank, when almost overnight, it came to be that speaking Spanish on your cellphone was enough to draw suspicious stares and racist remarks like 'dis is America , speak English' from the people standing in line next to you. Arizona in 2012 came to resemble Mississippi in 1955 more than decent people would be comfortable with-- checkpoints on the street, stopping people to ask them for documents. Roundups at the edge of 'hispanic' neighborhoods.

Even if we remove SB1070 from the equation, what remains is Arizona's litany of proposed bills and efforts directed at limiting the quality of life a migrant can have here in Arizona by restricting access to the very things that we all need to be productive, healthy, and functioning members of society. One thing is for sure, the SB1070 that returns to AZ will be confronted by a people very different from the people we were when it left for Washington D.C.

The authors of SB1070 hoped to make the life of a migrant so unpleasant that it would cause a mass self-deportation movement. Instead it has caused the people to become inspired, informed and involved. Not only are we not leaving, were fighting! Yes our community has suffered, but today we are a more organized, more informed and more engaged community. Student DREAMers have confronted the fears that they used to live with everyday, and now they are Undocumented and Unafraid. Artists, business owners, and entire families have found their voices in this cause and come forward to send a message to traditional politics. Senate, House of Representatives, County Sheriff, Supervisors, and School Boards around the state have had fresh new faces introduced to their respective races.

I'm positive that many years further down this same road, history will note this one thing above all others: A new kind of citizen was forged during our time in this crucible of hatred. This citizen bears the countenance reminiscent of our revolutionary ancestors. This citizen is vigilant, righteous and powerful. He is a citizen who will never again forget the wages of apathy. He will always remember that justice is something that is not given. It is not passively received as a gift from another. Justice must be fought for. Justice must be won. It must be protected by vigilance and it must be maintained by action. In him, the American Dream is manifest.
Arizona, and the people who live here have been changed forever.

Obama gave a speech in FL last week, stating America needs a bottoms-up economy, look that one up. Bottom up economy is Socialism, question is, which one as there are more than one type.

Bottom line, if Obama wins 2012, welcome to the newest Socialist nation! Who will be the ones responsible, the Latinos as the majority of Americans have finally seen the light. I've read on twitter where they encourage each other to vote, makes me feel they have no morals or values!

What makes this blog think that illegal immigrants should have the same rights as American citizens? Arizona has never discouraged legal Mexicans immigrants from doing anything in the state. It's illegal Mexican immigrants that are not welcome. You talk about hate? Maybe you should read this blog again.

People who come here illegally know the risks. They brought this on themselves. An "English Only" mandate? Oh, the horror. What uncivilized country would dare force the torture of immigrants to actually learn the language? Devils. What kind of evil society would force helpless undocumented people to actually come here legally? And obey laws? Oh, the wickedness of it all. I may faint. (rolling eyes)

"...crucible of hatred."??? Oh, brother. Spare me the drama queen statements. I'm surprised the title of this story wasn't "The War on Immigrants".

There is another motive for AZ to be so harsh and punitive towards the illegal immigrants - follow the MONEY called the 'prison industrial complex.' You need inmates to fill these prisons. Criminalizing small amounts of MJ gets you the black kids, now going after illegal immigrants get you the Mexicans. This is a whole community to populate your private owned govt funded prison industrial system. Again, follow the money. Nobody is safe from these 'white billionaires' who make money off the least among us brought to us by Reagan/Bush41 Administrations.

Prisons can only be populated by those who are without virtue.

Obama wants his voting base to look to HIM, not their church or community for assistance and a safety net.

SB1070 was not written as an Immigration Bill! It was written to create Profit for their "Private Prison System"! It was a way for them to fill more cells and collect revenue from the Federal Government. The authors just thought that the Latino population was the best target and would create the greatest opportunity for Higher Profits!

Do you not think, that if there were not 11.2 million illegals, unauthorized to be in the USA ~ that there would not be a need for "Private Prison System'?

They can racial profile me anytime. If it makes my streets and neighborhoods safer ill show my id to cop who stops me. What are people so pissed about. Do hispanics get made when they are stopped by hispanic cops? Do blacks get mad when they are stopped by black cops? If your a legal citizen show your identification, and be grateful that your community cares enough to protect the people that live there.

This is from yesterday's finding by the SCOTUS: "Hundreds of thousands of deportable aliens are apprehended in Arizona each year."
"Unauthorized aliens who remain in the state comprise...almost 6% of the population."
"And, in the State's most populous county, these aliens are reported to responsible for a disproportionate share of serious crime."
".....unauthorized aliens comprise 8.9% of the population and are responsible for 21.8% of the felonies in Maricopa County, which includes Phoenix."
"Accounts in the record suggest that there is an "epidemic of crime, safety risks, serious property damage and environmental problems" associated with the influx of illegal migration across private land near the Mexican border."
"THE PROBLEMS POSED TO THE STATE BY ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION MUST NOT BE UNDERESTIMATED." (my caps).

Your "community" is an embedded syndicate of foreign nationals with authorization to be here. You have no legitimate claim to be here. You are outcasts.

Some one better hire a lawyer to read the scotus's RULING TO THE LATINO'S AND THIS AUTHOR. so that the ILLEGALS AND THE AUTHOR can understand the implications of sb1070 2 b. scotus HELD UP AZ LAW THE 'SHOW ME YOUR PAPERS' SB1070 2B section, when anyone, you, me, the author, or any other person is stopped for the probablity of committing a crime, they MUST PROVE THEIR RIGHT TO BE IN MY COUNTRY IF THE OFFICER SUSPECTS THEM TO BE ILLEGALLY IN MY COUNTRY. THIS IS GREAT NEWS AS THOSE ILLEGLS WILL BER LEAVING AZ ASAP.
09:41 AM on 06/26/2012
I would show my "papers" to anyone, anywhere anytime. It wouldn't bother me one bit. In any foreign country if you don't have your "papers" and your stopped your going to get hemmed up big time! Why are people angry about showing papers or documentation? Do they have somehting to hide? These are questions officers are asking themsleves.

I hear Illinois is welcoming illegal immigrants. Pass the word. Tell them to ask for Luis Gutierrez when they get there.
12:54 AM on 06/26/2012
Fight like tigers --- but you better have good identification to prove you are legally here.
11:01 PM on 06/25/2012
I would love if out of all this "A new kind of citizen was forged during our time in this crucible of hatred." Notice the word "CITIZEN" whereas the states are trying to combat ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.
09:46 AM on 06/26/2012
Crucible of hatred? I would show my "papers" to any cop who stoped me it wouldn't boter me one bit! IF they are here legally they have nothing to worry about, when you lay with dogs you get fleas. If legal immigrants are rallying with illegal immigrants is laughable. Because when the smoke clears and the cops are really checking identification, the legals will be fined and sent on there way, it's the illegals who won't be happy. Then the legals will be up in arms again, in my opinion they are fake activists.

Racial profiling is not a new subject. The fact that it is out in the open for everyone to think about is a victory. The law does not give permission for racial profiling and will, put under scrutiny any police behavior that falls into that category. People are having to make a decision how they feel about the issue and can no longer sit on the fence. Hopefully this new recognition of this issue will encourage more Latinos to educate and position themselves to become a force that can no longer be ignored..

Unfortuately it doesn't make the streets safer because instead of the police following up on criminal activity they are expected to do the job of immigration enforcement. I personal would love to be stopped without cause.. the only papers i would show would be my voter's registration though.
