New Year's Wish: Getting My Country Back

What's Your Reaction:

Of all the things I want most in the new year, getting my country back tops everything. No, not the way those who want to turn the clock back to when the president wasn't a black man with foreign lineage and an agenda they see as "not American."

What I yearn for is when my country was, in fact, a beacon for democracy, for high principles and ideals. When the elected president was seen to be, and widely accepted to be, president of all Americans. When the party not in power not only did not want the president to fail, did not work for him to fail, but wanted him to succeed for the benefit of the country. When fomenting hatred of the president was not only un-American, but uncool.

During the Great Depression and the global war that followed, my father took great pride in being at once a staunch Republican and a strong supporter of the president, who happened to be a Democrat. My father did not see any contradiction. The country was beset with dire economic problems, as it is now, and we faced implacable enemies, as we do now. In such circumstances, my father would say, we are Americans first, party members second, and the president deserved our support. Not a blank check, but also not knee-jerk opposition just for the sake of it.

Back then, and in the years that followed before the dawn of polarized politics, facts mattered more than willful ignorance. They mattered more than the fear and fiction purveyed today in the name of defending American freedoms and values. Civility in debating the issues of the times was preferred over today's tendency to attack loudly, often in the key of nasty.

I want back a country wedded to the rule of law and the principles of human rights. When the law was not bent to justify a litany of abuses more identified with dictatorships I covered as a correspondent in junta-ruled Argentina, Pinochet's Chile, Franco's Spain, Salazar's Portugal, Noriega's Panama.

When terrorism was treated and prosecuted mainly as the hateful, hideous, cowardly crime that it is, not as a "new type of war" that justified injustices and suspension of civil liberties in the name of national security. When invading and occupying a country that did not attack us would not so easily be dismissed as a misstep, with no one held accountable for the human devastation inflicted in the process. "Collateral damage," we called it, and still call it, so we don't have to talk about children and other innocents caught in the crossfire. The inevitable "price of war."

When not so long ago you would not think of mistreating prisoners taken on the battlefield and elsewhere, let alone torturing them, not because international law forbids it, but because our moral compass rejects it. When our leaders and lawyers would have rebelled at the notion of indefinitely detaining prisoners beyond the reach of the law, beyond the inconvenient legal restrictions of inadmissible evidence, unlawful detention and other checks and balances of American jurisprudence.

I want a country that embraces without hesitation the words of English philosopher John Locke, cast in bronze on a monument to 9/11 victims at a law school a family member attended: "Wherever law ends, tyranny begins." Words that ring as true today as they did when he wrote them more than three centuries ago.

I want back the country I was proud to be part of growing up during the "good war" of the last century when Americans joined together on the home front and the war front, concerned more with what united them than divided them. I want the lump I always got in my throat when the Stars and Stripes passed by, when "the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air" resounded in my ears.

I want back a country that understood that its biggest strength was its democracy, not its military might. A democracy that can serve as a model for others and a reminder why we are Americans.

"You speak my heart." Someone else said it (I don't remember who) but your article says everything that I want to be said...this is the America we can rightfully love and respect again. And so can the rest of the world. Thank you,

Hear hear. Excellent and sadly needed article.

Thanks, it was a sad task to write the column. I know it's something my dad would have wanted me to say and I know he would shed a tear for the country if he were alive. As an old newsprint journalist, I had no idea the column would catch on so quickly across that new fangled thang, the Internet. I hope it keeps spreading, and others take up the theme and I get my wish in the New Year. I'm battling cancer and heart disease so I'd like to see the country whole again before I check out.

All best and Happy New Year,

Will

Perhaps the Mayans are correct, and we can all start over from scratch after December 21, 2012?

For a few months after 9/11 we had the country you wanted. We stood behind the president, not because we agreed with everything he did, but because we wanted America to be stong and win. Then the Republicans realized that to paraphrase a former Illinios governor: 9/11 was a f*%@#g valuable thing that could be used to invade Iraq and win in the next round of elections. Bush had a chance to not only rallty America, but the whoe world to our cause. He threw it away for a chance to play tough guy and win a few more congressional seats. What a waste.

PS: I even hoped for a win in Iraq once we invaded, though I believed it was a stupid move to make when it only hurt the war on terror.

The best way to get our country back is to elect a president who's ideals reflect our country's history. This president does not fit that description. What is good for our country is to see that this man does not get re-elected.

I encounter similar comments fairly often, and I have to confess that I honestly don't know what meaning is intended. Sometimes it seems as though the commenter wishes to do away with everything that democracy has brought us since the nation's founding. Is that it? That would be kind of hard to go along with for female voters.

Sometimes it seems as though it means a yearning for a President who will not point out any of the things that indicate the nation is headed for some trouble. Is that it? Please tell me.

I am afraid that the ideological debates of 2009 are going to become practical debates about how to save our economy from hyperinflation in 2010. Check out this article, it describes how Peak Oil and Inflation could converge to create the perfect storm.

The best way to "get our country back" is to fight really hard to make sure every member of the GOP gets thrown out of the Federal Government.

Then, when the GOP is no longer nationally competative, America can decide whether they are happy with a permanent, one party majority, or else we can watch the creation of a new political party which isn't built on hate and obstructionism, but is instead actually forced to have principles.

The destruction of the GOP really is the best thing that could happen to our nation.

I wholeheardily agree. The destruction of the Goopers is the only way.
12:50 PM on 12/30/2009
Not sure it's that simple. We're witnessing a sadly large number of people that thrive on hate and intolerance. If nothing else, having a black President made them come out of the woodwork even more. We see continuous examples of disrespect to the Office and although President Obama is perhaps used to it because of his color, I find it distinctly distasteful. Just removing the Party will not make these people (and their mannerisms) go away I'm afraid...

It won't get rid of those people, but it will remove them from being inflicting their radically anti-American agenda on the entire United States.

America's last, best hope is the destruction of the GOP, and purging conservatives out of the government. Anything less is useless, as history has already proven. Compromise doesn't work with people who's only goal is to destroy your country and way of life.

The deal is folks, teabaggers do not consider themselves Americans because they are angry at America for electing Obama. Teabaggers are openly advocating revolution and secession during a time of war. They are bringing assault rifles to townhalls to intimidate Americans to adopt Teabagger views, which is the very definintion of terrorism. The Teabagging right is the US Taliban and they want nothing short of the complete eradication of all liberals. The Teabaggers are the gravest threat the US has ever faced, far more dangerous than even the USSR, that other nation ran by teabaggers.

It can start with the media. Media in the hands of one group of people is poisoning the well. Lies, hatred, disrespect for the opposing views, lack of knowledge by the so called "reporters" all of this contributes to the situation this country is now in. When lies are spread and nobody intervenes this is when the problem starts. It is so easy to manipulate the ignorant.

Agreed, but there are two problems there. The first is the consolidation of "the media" into fewer and fewer hands and the second is the metamorphosis of "Journalism" into "Transcribers".
01:55 PM on 12/30/2009
I couldn't agree with you more. On the second thought, our newspaper journalists are now paid so little that no one can afford to go into the profession. My daughter has a degree with majors in journalism and political science. She was lucky to find work paying $10 an hour. How can you expect people to go to college to learn to be a good journalist when this is the pay scale they can expect when they get out.

So...all of the ugly, daily diatribe by the left didn't result in the exact same emotion on the right during the Bush years? Don't we owe it to ourselves to take a good hard look in the mirror and realize we're getting what we gave for all of those years? And c'mon people, I watch and read news on this site, Fox, MSNBC and others, The continuing immaturity from the left that the only correct news is on one side of the fence is ridiculous. There's plenty of bias to go around. The ongoing vilification of the opposition is just boring. Debate it, don't hurl kindergarten level insults at it.

No, the ugly diatribe from the left did not start until the GOP started accusing liberals of 9-11. If you remember, I know short memories among teabaggers is common, but if you remember right after 9-11 Bush had 92% support, that means a whole lot of democrats. Now, how many teabaggers supported Obama after this failed attack? Zero? There is your teabaggery patriotism, calling for secession and revolution against a democratic president while democrats were behind Bush after 9-11. You know darn well that if another 9-11 were to happen during Obama's term, you would be howling for Obama to step down because you don't like America, youre a teabagger. So quit your sniveling emoting and realize that you are a traitor just like every other teabagger.
09:53 AM on 12/30/2009
and you just proved my point.
03:34 PM on 12/30/2009
Frank - I'm an Independent. Not thrilled with the ugliness on either side. Why can't anyone debate their differences based on their view of the issues without making personal attacks on how American one or the other is? I know of no one on the "tea party" bandwagon who has called for secession or revolution. Many of my friends and co-workers were in Manhattan on 9-11, some in Tower 1. If it happened again, I expect Obama would do what any president would do. I don't agree with many of his policies, but I don't think he would hesitate to defend America. So see you jumped to quite a few conclusions didn't you? Smile, it's a new year. Unfortunately I'm afraid something will happen that will bring us together again. Hopefully a good thing will do that.

A good start would be getting Beck, Palin, Rush, Bachmann off of our TV and radio.
Then stop covering the teabaggers, birthers, and the negative republicans.
President Obama has put a lot many positive speeches/comments over the past year but the noisy folks on the right have been drowning him out.

I too wish that our country returns to sanity. I have to say though that it is not only the right wing that wishes failure on the president. the extreme left wing and blue dog democrats have done more damage than right winger.

Want that America back, you need to get rid of the farce that is Fox "news" - a purely propaganda station, whose only objective is spread lies, hatred, and misinformation about our President, and about Democrats.

Want that America back, get rid of the racists in this country, who will believe any, and every negative thing they hear about their first black President, because he does not have the right hue to his skin - in their opinion.

Want that America back pray for a press that is more interested in talking about the FACTS, as opposed to worrying about their ratings.

good luck with that. go talk to the repubs.

THe fact is the the US has never been in perfect unison,
we have always had our problems but the majority of the
people worked with it. The bigots will never accept Pres
Obama and nobody really cares.
