To compete with what it deems Google's "misappropriation" of its news, the Associated Press wants to fight back by building its own news aggregator. The Web search giant "has a wacky algorithm" for collecting news stories, AP Chief Executive Tom Curley says in an interview. As an alternative, Curley plans to create "landing pages" that would host articles from any news sources that allow their headlines on the site. Participating outlets would share revenue generated by ads placed on those pages, "monetizing content in an ecosystem that would be different from the Google ecosystem," Curley says. 2

Newspaper publishers eager to have their results show up as more authoritative than others got a lesson in ranking results from Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt, who told them Google News already does that. Google News uses a relatively fixed set of sources which are selected based on exactly the kind of trust that you're describing ". Improving search rankings is one of the ideas that has been gaining traction with publishers ; upgrading search results is one aspect of the Associated Press content control campaign announced Monday. 1
