Calling All Investors: eBay Announces Plans to IPO Skype in 2010

After earlier reports that Skype s founders were trying to buy back the company from eBay, the company has now released the news that it plans to spin off Skype as a separate company and file for an initial public offering. 2

Just 24 hours after divesting itself of StumbleUpon, eBay is making a much bigger but much anticipated move: announcing plans to spin-off Skype Skype reviews as its own, public company. 7

What was less clear is how the e-commerce giant would dispose of the division that lets users place free or cheap phone calls over the Internet. 1

Online auction giant eBay announced plans on Tuesday to spin off Web communications service Skype with an initial public offering next year, ending the troubled relationship between the two firms. 4

San Jose, Calif.-based eBay said Tuesday it expects to complete the IPO in the first half of next year, though it said the timing will be based on market conditions. 10

John Donahoe, eBay's chief executive, said in a statement: Skype is a great stand-alone business with strong fundamentals and accelerating momentum. 5

The IPO idea follows recent rumors that Skype founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis were rounding up private equity partners to buy back their firm for $1.7bn. 9
