It was a hot Saturday night at Downtown’s popular Court Street multiplex, where the second popcorn machine fire in six weeks shut down date night screenings and sent hundreds of moviegoers out into the rain.
Just as in the Aug. 4 blaze, no one was seriously injured, and the fire started in a popcorn maker — though not the same one as the first time, a manager of the Court Street Cinemas said.
Flooding from sprinklers caused some minor damage, but the movie house was open for business on Monday, with a line down the block filled with patrons hoping to see the ubiquitous Tyler Perry’s new film, “I Can Do Bad All By Myself.”
The elevator was still out of service, a problem since the most popular films were being screened on the top floors. A handicapped patron was disappointed when she was turned away by the manager.
One man who was inconvenienced by the blaze in the fifth-floor kernel crisper returned on Monday to collect free passes.
“The most important thing is that no one got hurt,” said Robert Chiver, who was in the middle of the Perry film when the fire broke out.
Sixty-five firefighters responded to the fire which was under control in about 40 minutes.
A spokesman for Regal Entertainment Group, the movie theater’s parent company, did not return calls in time for The Brooklyn Paper’s fiery online deadline.
