Xeth Feinberg's "The Uncomfortable Circle" is a study in humor, economy of space, commentary and the classic gag -- all in a neat, round package. Feinberg is the Bill Keane of today!

Xeth, you really put your finger on it! Conservative means to advocate conservation - and our precious planet is the most important thing we have to preserve!
But what are we going to do about it? What are you going to do about it? If we're going to save this planet from the ravages of hyper-capitalism, we're all going to have to change our life-styles, to put real conservation first. Eat local foods. Ride a bicycle. Write your representative, and ask him/her to support legislation curbing greenhouse gases. These are all small steps - but we need to start making such efforts if we are going to avoid the worst consequences of nearly 200 years of heedless industrialization on this planet.

Xeth points out the essential philosophical contradictions that are inherent in conservative ideology. This isn't limited to environmentalism, however. Contradictions can also be found in social and foreign policy. What is conservative about choosing to start wars, however? If conservative has the implied meaning of "cautious," then such a policy is certainly not conservative. Yet - this has been a dominant approach followed by so-called conservatives. While so-called conservatives rail against the the erosion of social values that liberals have caused, in fact the economic policies pursued by so-called conservatives with their emphasis on ruthless economic Darwinism have been destructive of societal cohesion. This is not conservative. So-called conservatives could more accurately be called greedy bastards who believe that money can buy morally correct positions and that the mythical marketplace will solve all of societies problems. The failures of this approach are painfully evident.

Well said, Sergio. I've gotten a good bit of feedback on this cartoon (not necessarily on this forum!)... I think it resonates because it shows how strange the so-called 'conservative' approach is when it can't even encompass the most basic, realistic use of the word 'conservation.' What ARE conservatives conserving, exactly?
