Yael Cohen is the Founder, President and CCF (Chief Cancer Fucker) of Fuck Cancer; a charity that she started in 2009 when her mother was diagnosed with cancer. Astounded to learn that over 90% of cancers are curable in stage one, Cohen realized that early detection is our only cure right now and that we should be looking for cancer instead of just finding it. Fuck Cancer targets Generation Y in an effort to engage them in the important dialogue about early detection; with a clear call to action to involve, engage, and educate their parents. The movement aims to create a generation that puts an END to late stage cancer.

Digitally Disrupting the Cancer Space

(0) Comments | Posted July 30, 2012 | 12:13 PM

It's safe to say I spend a lot of time in the cancer space. In 2009 I founded FCancer, and over the last three years we've noticed a few things were missing in the cancersphere. Three areas our community identified as needing a little extra attention...

Let's Talk About Sex, Baby

Parents are awkward. It's a fact. They wear scrunchies in public, try to use "hip" words that make our skin crawl, and worst of all, just when we're at our most uncomfortable stage in life, they try to talk to us about sex. No familial relationship is strong enough to...

Learning How to Be the Boss

(1) Comments | Posted March 4, 2011 | 4:50 PM

These days being your own boss is like being Charlie Sheen's psychotherapist; everyone wants it, but we don't exactly know why. When I started FCancer, along with a plethora of awesome, scary and interesting responsibilities; I became 'the boss'. I didn't think twice about what this meant. Just...

The New Generation of Karma Junkies

(2) Comments | Posted February 28, 2011 | 1:28 AM

Only a few short years ago, aspiring doctors didn't necessarily need to have "philanthropist" in their title. College students were content with the heavy assignment workload and late-night pizza runs. Busy professionals were furthering their careers instead of their karma count. Flash forward to 2011, and philanthropy is the new...

My mother is BRCA positive, after multiple surgeries and a life changing few years, I know what that has meant for her. But now I have to start asking, what does that mean for the whole family?

BRCA refers to the Breast Cancer...

Twitter or TED?

After weeks of pulling my hair out over planning, writing, re-writing, and rehearsing my talk... TEDxVancouver is finally over (cue sigh-of-relief). It was my first time speaking at TEDx, and although it was a positive experience, it was also utterly nerve-racking. Now that it's over and...

What Provokes Even the Mildest of Towns?

(1) Comments | Posted November 2, 2010 | 1:35 AM

Apparently I do. This weekend, a not-so-nice article on FCancer was published in a local paper, the Vancouver Sun. I'm getting ahead of myself. The article was written because a local store, Moule, chose to put our logos in their window...uncensored. This elicited instant...

Why F*ck Cancer?

(2) Comments | Posted October 13, 2010 | 8:54 PM

I always assume people know why I started FCancer, but in reality the name does not tell the story. So here it is.

Two years ago my Mom had her routine annual mammogram, and thank God she did -- she was diagnosed with breast cancer a few...

Post-CGI Perspectives

Before embarking on the journey that was the Clinton Global Initiative, I publicly confessed that butterflies had taken up residence in my stomach. Now I can gladly share, that the squatter butterflies have been evicted and CGI was a success. CGI is what you make of...

Pre-CGI: A Tale of Confusion, Excitement, and Nerves

In two days I will be boarding yet another plane for New York, but this time is different. This time I won't be taking ten meetings a day, running to the FCancer office with every free second, and scarfing down street food when I realize I've only eaten...

Tell Off Cancer With One Click

F*ck cancer! Go ahead, say it out loud. Whether or not cancer has affected your life, it can't be ignored. Last year, when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, I emblazoned the words "F*ck Cancer" on a T-shirt as a private source of strength for her. Being the firecracker...
