Gun Control Issues Take Back Seat at DNC

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick tears into Mitt Romney's record as the governor of that state. He, like the other speakers, is silent on gun control.

By: Sayre Quevedo

The last two nights at the Democratic National Convention have had consistent themes: immigration, women’s rights, the economy, and college affordability. But one subject that has consistently been on the minds of Americans for the last weeks has not been mentioned once: gun control.

In July of this year, James Holmes entered the midnight premier of Batman at a theater in Aurora, Colorado, killing 12 and injuring 58. Then on August 5th, Wade Page entered a Sikh Temple, killing six people and injuring four. And on August 24th, Jeffery Johnson opened fired on a crowded street in front of the Empire State Building killing his former co-worker. These incidents didn’t happen years, but months and weeks before this event. So why haven’t they been mentioned?

The conventions are all about staying on message, and solidifying the president’s values. Veering from set talking points could be confusing for an audience tuning in to be reassured about the President and his accomplishments, not the issues he has yet to to solve. But Colleen Williamson from Indianapolis, Indiana says there’s another reason. “I really believe it’s because it’s kind of a scary issue too. I mean...people don’t want to hear about all the bad stuff that goes on.”

When I asked her when and if gun control would be addressed, she seemed uncertain. “In the last four years it hasn’t changed that much, so it’s probably not going to change in the next four. We’ve got too many other issues: education, women’s issues, health care. We’ve got too many issues to dwell on the gun issue.”

Cristin Leighty, 24, from Washington D.C argues that many of those other issues hit closer to home for most people. “In general, until things really affect you most people kind of tune out. Most Americans are thinking about their own jobs and the economy, so those kinds of issues, [like gun control] tend to take the back burner...But I’m sure if you talk to people in Colorado they’d probably feel differently.”

I didn’t talk to anyone from Colorado about guns, but I did talk to someone who said he’s been personally affected by gun violence. 27 year-old Ulises Gonzalez from East Los Angeles said he would like to see guns completely eradicated, but he concedes, “It’s a part of American culture, the right to bear arms.”

So, can we expect to hear Obama talk about gun violence tonight? Probably not. I just hope gun violence, like Leighty mentioned, doesn’t have to touch all of us before someone is willing to take a stance.

Gun violence. Gimme a break! Why is it that we blame drunk driving deaths on the person behind the wheel and not Volkswagon or Budweiser? Wouldn't all those deaths be a result of beer crime or automobile assaults?

Great point, just a question, if the drunk driver was driving a car with a automatic transmission, would that make it a "fully automatic assault automobile"?

"In the last four years it hasn’t changed that much, so it’s probably not going to change in the next four.” Bull. Ship. If he gets 4 more years, guns are the new tobacco and the sky is the limit on 'sin' taxes. Um... for the children. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Gun control wasn't brought up because the folks at the DNC are smart enough to realize gun control doesn't work and the American people don't want more useless laws.

No they know it will cost votes...better to wait until after the election when the gloves can come off and they can put that 2nd amendment in its place

"And on August 24th, Jeffery Johnson opened fired on a crowded street in front of the Empire State Building killing his former co-worker."

If you are going to make statements about things, make sure of their factuality before making them. This statement is false. Those people that were shot and wounded in front of the Empire State Building was not shot by Johnson, but by the POLICE.

And I'll see your person from East LA and raise you a widowed 18 year old mother in Oklahoma and a grandfather saving his grandchild. Both of whom used guns to save lives.

This is just another attempt to twist facts, confuse the ill-informed, and create fear by relying false information from the spin masters of the Brady Bunch.

I wonder if "progressives" ever stop to think literally how many MILLIONS of working class Americans vote Republican over this one issue...

Considering that hundreds more guns were sold the week after the latest Colorado shooting I would say that Coloradons don't feel guns should be banned. I've read that concelaed carry class registrations are up as well.

To provide fair consideration: Senator Diane Feinstein did advocate re-enacting (and likely expanding) a federal law prohibiting manufacture of popular and rarely criminally misused civilian sporting rifles.

He has taken a stance.  We can address the issues of gun violence by better enforcing our existing laws.

Why would this suddenly become a critical issue when we have experienced a continuous drop in the homicide rate, which is down 57% from its peak in 1992.

“In the last four years it hasn’t changed that much, so it’s probably not going to change in the next four."

With violent crime falling for the last four years, and continuing about a 20 year decline - while gun ownership has increased, gun laws loosened, more and more people lawfully carrying concealed firearms - why should gun control be a hot issue?

Don't forget, guns don't kill people, people kill people.

They made it clear they will ban most guns people have been buying since 2004.

The founding fathers took a stance on gun control and decided to not let General Gage disarm them. Then they secured OUR Fundamental Right to Keep and Bear Arms in the Bill of Rights. 44 State legislatures have taken a stance and have recognized a state level Right to Keep and Bear Arms. The Congress took a stance and ratified the 14th Amendment so that southern states could not disarm recently freed slaves. The Supreme Court took a stance and ruled in the Heller and McDonald cases and cleared up any doubt about The Peoples Right. Yes, it’s sad that at the DNC they are not taking a stance and protecting our Rights.
