Loon, a hip hop artist who once starred in music videos surrounded by
scantily dressed women and expensive cars, has converted to Islam.
Imagine the pressure of living up to an image that was created and molded
like a gob of clay. Imagine friends you have grown up with, shared laughs
and meals with, turning against you out of pure jealousy; like a bucket of
crabs trying to pull you down to their level at any cost. Not to mention the
music industry politics that control an artist's ability to actually create
and release their own musical vision in a timely manner.
Loon's shaggy beard almost looks like a disguise, camoflaging the rapping
"bad boy," but when he discusses his new life and religion, Loon beams a
contented ear-to-ear smile. It's a sign that he's in a new and better
place.

I hope he practices and understands the true teachings of Islam. It is easy to misunderstand Islam from the media as well as some of its so-called followers. Salaam.
I have no idea who Loon is but this is no shock to me. A few of the black people I know as friends and one in my family have at one time in their lives explored Islam, including me. Its like a period of exploration for some people or a black pride awakening. Most of the people I knew who got into Islam strayed back to whatever they used to do after they found what they were looking for. Some people found it too restrictive as born and raised red-blooded free Americans.
I wonder why this is a story. Nobody ever cared before what unknown black people were doing before. All through the 90s we went through a Malcolm X phase and nobody even noticed this second wave of black pride emergence. Now its a story on a liberal blog. Go figure.
Poor guy.
