The Empire State of Public Art

There is currently a plethora of powerful public art statements punctuating New York City. I don't recollect there ever being quite so many artworks sprouting up in the dense urban summer -- perfect timing for pedestrians and visitors alike to view the huge spectrum of work out there. Concurrently what this season brings is a group of whip smart and dedicated interns to Art Production Fund. I sent them out on a pilgrimage to document the spectrum of gritty, sophisticated, accessible and at times invisible art within the spaces we all share. Here is what they came up with:

JACQUELINE HUMPHRIES “After Hours: Murals on the Bowery"

We will start with Art Production Fund’s very own project: “After Hours: Murals on the Bowery" (in collaboration with The New Museum) where 18 artists were invited to create an artwork for a roller shutter seen after the stores close every night. We had the artists record their own message on the cell phone tour available to all. So in Humphries own words: “My first studio in NY was on Bowery and Grand Streets. I’ve always liked the Bowery for it’s local hardware culture which used to spread from the Bowery most of the way across Canal Street. This neighborhood has changed a great deal, but the Bowery has really retained a lot of its character from those days. I agreed to do this project because I wanted to see a work of mine painted by another painter’s hand…I chose this image because I wanted something simple and graphic, with an open character, and I’m quite interested to see if it invites graffiti which I feel would complete it by integrating it back in to the texture and feel of the Bowery at night.” Her desire met was met when a street artist spray painted a large red nose in the middle shutter!
