Setting goals gives us something to strive towards and boosts our self-confidence each time we achieve them. More often than not, we are guilty of setting goals that we sometimes fail to meet. I have observed the following to be the major reasons we sometimes fail to meet goals we set for ourselves.
1. Excuses, Excuses, Excuses - We all make them! These are often easier to come up with than reasons why we need to do something. They can range from not having enough time to the stars not being correctly aligned. Whatever the case, they paralyze us.
I personally come up with mine when I am feeling fearful, anxious, uncertain or just plain old lazy. Sometimes it seems easier and safer not doing anything at all than tackling what needs to be taken care of.
2. Magnifying our fears more than we do our abilities - Fear of failure has killed so many dreams before they had the chance to take off. We are so accustomed to leaning more towards things not working out than to them working out and often allow this to dissuade us from taking on challenges or setting goals for ourselves.
Fear robs us of our self-confidence and allows us to come up with reasons why we can't do things or make them happen. Grab your fears by the horns and stop underestimating yourself; you are more capable than you think.
3. Not a strong enough "WHY" - What does your goal mean to you? Why have you set it?
We sometimes chase after things because others expect us to or to keep up with our peers or the "Joneses", if you will.
When we set goals for the wrong reasons and chase after things we don't really need or desire; we aren't driven to pursue them, commit to them or achieve them and end up wasting a great deal of time, energy and money that could have been spent pursuing things that resonate with us.
4. Not setting our priorities right - There are times when I choose to keep up with the Kardashians rather than work on my writing or allow other unimportant things to distract me. It's amazing how we manage to find time for things that don't really add value to our lives, yet give the excuse of lack of time as the reason we can't pursue a goal.
It's never ever about having time, but more so about making time. If something is important enough to you, you will find time for it and make it an important enough priority.
5. Trying your hand at everything - It's so easy to become a Jack of all trades and a master of none. When we spread our attention, energy and focus into many things, we sometimes fail to hone our skills and expertise in the area that we would most flourish in and that is best suited for us.
It is important for us to discover what we are really good at, passionate about and most driven to do and focus on and perfect that one thing. We weren't meant to do everything, neither can we do EVERYTHING.
6. "Crying wolf" too often - The more we talk about things we want to do and fail to do them, the more we not only lose creditability with others but mostly with ourselves. When we continually fail to keep our word or meet goals we set, we become demoralized and sometimes lose confidence and faith in ourselves and often times abandon our goals altogether.
We need to learn how to walk the walk more than talk the talk and expend our energy into doing things rather than talking about them. As they say, let the results speak for themselves and your actions do the talking.
7. Lacking a plan - When we fail to plan, we plan to fail. A plan is integral in helping us achieve our goals and is a GPS or map, if you will, that helps get us from point A to B. How do you plan on accomplishing your goal? What actions do you need to take? Outline this and have a clear strategy.
Having a plan will gives us direction, allows us to better set our priorities as well as ensure we stay on track in the pursuit of our goals. Not having one will have you running around like a chicken without a head and sometimes result in failure.
8. Not being committed - You know what am talking about! That diet that's started with the very best intentions on Monday but ends that very day as soon as your co-worker walks into the office with a box of donuts. "I don't want to offend her, I'll have just one and start the diet tomorrow", you say.
Unless one is fully committed to following through with what one has set to do, reasons and excuses will always pop up that will derail you or cause you to postpone actions you need to take that support your goals
9. Not having a deadline - Having a deadline forces one to become more focused and disciplined and creates a sense of urgency; factors that keep one driven and attentive to one's goals.
When things are open-ended and lack a time frame within which to get accomplished, they sometimes get pushed to the back burner; this often leads to procrastination and at times results in things not getting done at all.
10. Giving up when the going gets tough - Nothing worth having is ever easy. Some goals will really require our blood, sweat or tears. We live in a time that promotes instant gratification and doesn't encourage perseverance enough and where quitting is often viewed as an option.
There is no such thing as over-night success; diligence, dedication and discipline are required if we want to meet your goals or change our lives. We also have to be willing to put in the time.
