Exclusive: Sophie Cranston Chosen as Kate Middleton's Wedding Dress Designer

Posted: 04/16/2011 6:06 pm

UPDATE 4/29: Kate Middleton's wedding dress designer is Sarah Burton. Read more about Kate Middleton's McQueen wedding gown here.

Previously:
I've reported many exclusive details on the royal wedding, but the biggest scoop is undoubtedly the identity of Kate Middleton's wedding dress designer.

I can reveal that Sophie Cranston of the Libélula label is said to have won the coveted commission to make Catherine's wedding dress. You might recall that the royal bride-to-be stepped out to a friend's wedding in Yorkshire this January in a much-talked-about, vintage-inspired, Libélula black velvet dress coat with a diamante clasp -- the Dulwich coat, named after the area in South London where Cranston has her studio:

Through my insider sources, I've heard who was designing Catherine's wedding dress four months ago but kept it a secret in accordance with palace wishes, only divulging in my Huffington Post story last December that the designer is a young, relatively unknown British woman. At the time, everyone else was certain that Bruce Oldfield was the chosen designer. The relentless media speculation then moved on to a host of other names such as Alice Temperley, and even Victoria Beckham, before settling on front-runner Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen.

A St. James's Palace spokesperson I talked to won't confirm or deny that Cranston had been selected, only saying, "We are not being drawn on any speculation on the wedding and cannot comment."

But something this big won't stay a secret indefinitely. Catherine's wedding dress is near-completion and with less than two weeks to go, there's indication that the designer's identity might soon be revealed, anyway. It's also likely that there is more than one dress made (by the same designer), much like Princess Diana's dressmakers, David and Elizabeth Emanuel, who had a "back-up" dress in case something happened to the first one.

***For more royal wedding news, visit our Royal Wedding page.***

From what I've uncovered, the reason the palace did not announce the designer's name (as they did with the Emanuels who were confirmed just one month after Diana's engagement) was to protect Cranston and her family from media scrutiny for as long as possible, and to allow her the freedom to create the wedding gown of Catherine's dreams without additional pressures and distractions. It's stressful enough to make an unforgettable gown that will be seen by billions around the world and which will be immortalized in royal and fashion history.

34-year-old Cranston is young but certainly not short on talent. As I've said before, this will be another Jason Wu-moment -- when a talented, previously little-known designer is launched and becomes a globally-recognized name.

Cranston won the Designer of the Year Award at London's Graduate Fashion Week in 1999 and then went on to hone her design skills under the tutelage of Alexander McQueen before going into business with Alice Temperley to create the Temperley label in 2000. A couple of years later, Cranston left for Andalusia, Spain to pursue her interest in flamenco and her time at Costa La Luz inspired her to create her own label Libélula, which means dragonfly in Spanish. The line is known for its feminine, figure-flattering silhouettes, luxurious fabrics, and vibrant use of colors and prints. There is also a small ready-to-wear and bespoke bridal collection, according to her website.

Since establishing Libélula in 2002, Cranston has gradually acquired a loyal and discerning clientele which includes Catherine and the Middleton ladies, as well as Emma Watson, Jerry Hall and writer Celia Warden who married fellow journalist Piers Morgan last year in a Libélula gown.

Coincidentally, the Libélula española is one of the first helicopters invented -- perhaps a subliminal nod to Prince William's job as a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot? Oh, the little clues!

That's all, for now, readers -- don't expect me to reveal the exact design of the dress. After all, Catherine should have her big moment when she arrives at Westminster Abbey and surprises William and everyone else with her spectacular gown fit for a future queen.

Yvonne, Okay, please share with your readers why you reported that Sophie Cranston was the desginer. You had indicated earlier that since you revealed Sophie was creating the dress that Kate might go to a back-up dress. I have a very strong impreesion that Sarah Burton has been the designer all along, and the dress Kate wore was certainly not a Plan B type dress. What happened? Thanks.

I'm glad you asked. I've reported that Sophie Cranston is said to be Kate's wedding dress designer, and this was the name that I heard from my royal sources four months ago. As I've mentioned, William and Kate have been playing a cat-and-mouse game with the press and deliberately left a trail of red herrings on all aspects of the wedding. Not even their closest friends knew many of the details. Just take a look at the very public visits by Carole and Pippa Middleton to Bruce Oldfield and Alice Temperley's salons - and none of the Middleton ladies ended up wearing either designer. Or how many honeymoon and stag party locations that have been mentioned - touted as "exclusives" in British tabloid papers and American weekly magazines.

At the end of the day, no royal journalist, no matter how good, is 100% correct all the time. Show me a single royal correspondent who has never reported anything incorrectly. However I've had a better track record than most. I've correctly reported on the embroidered dress that will be very classic and traditional in style, the heavily-embroidered shoes, the short train, the modest-sized tiara chosen from the Queen's collection that has not been seen in public for quite awhile, just to name a few. I do think that there was more than one dress made and possibly more than one designer commissioned - even mother Carole had more than one wedding outfit commissioned by different designers.

Yvonne, all is forgiven. If anyone owes an apology, it's the royal source who deliberately misled you. However, please don't be hard on them -- they did it to make sure the wedding details remained a surprise.

So interesting to speculate about this. Yvonne, do you think someone deliberately misled you? And of course, it doesn't hurt Sophie to be mentioned as the possible designer of the dress; it gives her some nice free publicity!

Who desigined Pippa's evening dress? I thought it was Alice Temperley.

I was actually expecting something little less conservative for the wedding dress. But they are a cute couple and look great together.

Good call -- great "scoop." Sarah Burton designed an exquisite dress and was a excellent choice.

Yvonne,

Sophie Cranston has denied she is making the royal wedding dress. Care to address this new information?

Sure - watch for my next story. A denial from the designer is expected, whether they're making the dress or not. Frankly, I'm surprised that Cranston didn't deny it immediately, but kept saying "not commenting" before she finally denied it after being beseiged by the world's media.

Also, a denial doesn't necessarily mean that the designer is not involved. Sarah Burton came out with a flat denial right after her name was indicated as the wedding dress designer, but that certainly has not stopped the speculation by many that she's received the commission.

ANYTHING has got to be better than that mess Diana wore! Diana looked like she had been rolled in a bedsheet with way too puffy sleeves! (Victorian? Mess! It even looked Dingy!) And dear God, I hope this young women does something special with her hair! And by that I mean she keeps if off her forehead and most importantly out of her eyes! Diana's thick shrock of hair hanging over her forehead causing her to actually dip her face to see where she was going DID NOT go over with me as a look of demure shyness. Diana looked miserable and now that we know WHAT was going on in her life, she was.

On the other hand - the commercial pattern for the bridesmaid's dress worked very well for a Blue Fairy Hallowe'en costume.

Recent pics of Kate Middleton show her to be going down the anorexic route. Even her normal lovely face looked to be that of a 40 year old woman.

I know. Kate never looked younger than her age and the weight loss isn't doing her any favors. If it's a diet, Kate needs to ditch it, and if Kate's already stressed out about royal duties, the weight loss doesn't bode well for the future. It's not like the stress or the treadmill of royal duties are going to go away after she marries William, ever. Prince Philip still has to follow around the Queen. No retirement.

There was a picture of her in one of the dresses that she bought earlier this week. You could see her rib bones in the picture, and her breasts were nonexistent. She used to have some. Prince William is going to snuggle up with skin hanging off of bones on his honeymoon. I hope she gainst the weight back and becomes at least a US size four or six. She wouldn't be fat in photographs still, but she would have a little softness to her looks. Naomi, Cindy, Linda and the other supermodels of the nineties were that size. Not the zeroes and twos of today.

This is interesting - FWIW - the Daily Mail is reporting that Middleton designed it herself - not Cranston. Renaissance-inspired, ivory satin and lace, pearl buttons, ten foot train, nod to Diana, no flounces.
