Hey! Stop Talking, You Woman! The Attack on Katherine Fenton

Posted: 10/18/2012 7:00 pm

This morning I woke up to check my Twitter feed and learned the name of the conservative right's newest target: Katherine Fenton.

For those of you who watched the second presidential debate this past week, you may remember Fenton as the young women who brought up the sad truth that women, today, make 72 percent of what their male counterparts make. This made a lot of people mad -- a lot of conservative people.

Yesterday afternoon, the Washington Free Beacon released what they have termed a 'study' of Katherine Fenton's alleged personal Twitter account, which, from the evidence, shows some tweets that have been presented out of context, presumably in hopes of damaging her credibility in the public eye. From this study of Fenton's Twitter account, the Washington Free Beacon has named her a certifiable 'party girl' who likes to drink, dislikes law enforcement and disagrees with women who watch sports. Raw Story has more:

The article, published anonymously, alleged that Katherine Fenton's Twitter account "reveals that purple Joose is her choice to get blackout drunk and she has a history of getting wet at happy hour." The article also highlights sexually suggestive messages Fenton allegedly sent from her Twitter account.

The Twitter account cited in the article no longer exists.

Groundbreaking stuff, right? So what if she likes 'joose' or talks about sex on Twitter? She can do that, hell, I can do that. In conclusion: Fenton has done nothing wrong.

But before we move on, I have some questions: Where is the 'study' of the other people that asked questions to the candidates? Where is the publishing of their social media accounts? Where are the articles insinuating that they are sluts, that they drink too much and that they should be proverbially beaten up in the media for asking a question that affects more than 50% of America?

*crickets*

Only Fenton has had this done. She has been made a reminder to us all that a woman should never, ever ask why they are being discriminated against in our society in a public forum. Ever.

This is sexist and we all need to come together and recognize that. No matter what Fenton may have said on her alleged personal Twitter account, she still deserves the right to ask a candidate why her work isn't being considered as equal to that of men's work. And in the same note, she and all women deserve equal pay, no matter what.

In this case of "Fenton v. Conservative Right," we see that the Internet has once again absorbed the idea that there is a public/private divide between men and women. And that a woman should be quiet and at home, complacent, while a man can be public and allowed to do whatever they want. (If this had been a man I think things would be quite different.)

At the end of the day, Twitter is considered another form of 'the public' and a woman being in public and talking openly with other people about sex, drinking and having fun is just not OK for a lot of people, because we still live in a world that thinks women should be stuck in the 1950s, raising their kids and cooking dinner.

I mean, isn't that what Mitt Romney's whole binder babble was about? That he was so gracious to hire women AND let them go home at certain hours of the day to be a good wife, mother and caretaker of everything?

God bless that Romney, he sure does care about those women.

And God bless the conservative right for another round of their favorite past time: the public shaming of women.

I have to laugh at people who accuse Obama of being a member of a religion that suppresses women and he's all for equality, yet the ones who accuse him are the ones who want to do exactly what they accuse Obama's supposed religious background of doing! Did that make sense?? :)

Right wing mud flinging serves to remind them where they oozed out of and gratifies their need to strike out at anyone who declines to kowtow to their ideology.

Under no circumstances will right wing males allow females any measure of equality or the right to make any decisions about their reproductive destiny. Women are utterly lacking as far as right wing males are concerned. They lack the ability and right to earn a salary equal to a man who is doing the same job as well as the ability to determine if and when to reproduce.

I can't wait to have some right wing male explain to me that I am wrong. I am waiting to see the rationale that they are right in their quest to insure that females will forever be second class human beings.

Why did they single her out? Simple. She didn't keep to her proper place. Welcome back to the '50s...the 1250s.

Yet another non casualty in the GOP's non war on women. Serves her and Fluke right for having opinions and wanting equality and stuff.

And she's still undecided? Let the repubs have 'er.

So scary. The worst part is that after all this bullying from the right wing she is still an "undecided voter." What the hell?? So you're going to vote for the very people that want to keep you down and silent? Clearly not the next Sandra Fluke. I don't understand how any woman could ever vote republican. Yes, please--take my rights away, insult me constantly and force me back into the kitchen and caring for the children in 2012. Let's fight all the same fights the early feminists and suffragists fought and died for all over again. Very productive.

If a legitimate question is raised about fairness and equality regarding the distribution of income between genders than such claims should be embraced with open arms and not be ridiculed without supporting one’s point of view. The Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act passed by President Barack H Obama in 2009. Which was action taken to support and promote fairness in the workforce. Let’s not ridicule, but continue to progress towards prosperity for all.

It is unbelievable that the right demonizes a young woman who asks a legitimate question. We wonder why more people do not participate in the political process. This is why! I think Katherine Fenton is a smart young person who does not deserve others to judge her tweets!

It's sad that this poor woman is having to deal with the backlash from what I would label a radical conservative website. I'm conservative and have never heard of the Washington Free Beacon until this incident and, in my opinion, it's nothing but a political "tabloid" full of political drama that everyone should be ignoring. What concerns me more is that more reputable media sources pick this up from a "tabloid website" and further spread the political drama.

The Washington Free Beacon and other people and sites who have attacked Katherine Fenton should be ashamed.

It's a shame that the most important political process has turned into this mud slinging, rumor spreading, dishonest, immature and simply sad displays of campaigning ads and debates....on both the Republican and Democratic sides.

When will honor, honestly, integrity, compassion, morality and compromise return?

Her tweets totally make me LOL. What she said is really nothing unusual nowadays. People just don't normally post it on their public profiles.

And, while I wouldn't want my child (if I had one) posting those things online (regardless of whether or not they are a boy or girl), I think she's ballsy. She says what no one else is thinking. Whether she's a woman or not, we ultimately need people like her to speak up and say something for the hundreds of others who just sit by watching.

It makes you think that some women are totally brainwashed when it comes to equal pay, that fact that Mitt Romney will get rid of the Lilly Ledbelly act which is equal pay for women which president Obama signed into law.

Salem add a few more lines of the same words and you'll have a good tongue twister. One thing for you sure. It is a shame.

This is 2012, you can be whatever gender you want to be. They should change to men if they want more money, those greedy women!
