1990s: Three Friends Coffee House, Portland, OR
1 of 11
Coffee-shop culture came to the forefront of the zeitgeist in the 1990s, and was portrayed most famously on "Friends" --
which centered the characters' social lives around a ubiquitous coffee shop where Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) worked. A coffee shop similar to the fictional Central Perk resides in Portland, OR, complete with cozy couches, giant cups of coffee, a warm vibe and tasty baked goods. They serve Stumptown Coffee
and although this brand wasn't around in the '90s, some argue that these rabid roasters are on the verge of becoming "the next Starbucks."
