Review: Amelia

Posted October 23, 2009 | 11:22 AM (EST)

Watching Amelia, a biopic of aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart, is like spending two hours reading a Wikipedia entry on the title character.

With two biographies as source material, the adaptation by screenwriters Anna Hamilton Phelan and Ron Bass tries to cram in too many facets of a 10-year period in...

And yet, it's everything.

That is why comedian...

In the indie feature Peter and Vandy, Jason Ritter stars as one half of a New York City couple who fall in love, then out of love, and then get back together. A pretty simple premise, except the whole film is told out of chronological order. It shifts back and...

The forecast for the animated feature Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs could very well be sunny with a chance of a big hit.

In Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, two story lines, each containing a strong female character, converge in a violent, bloody finale. Actress Diane Kruger plays one of these women -- a 1940s German screen star named Bridget von Hammersmark. Famous, beautiful and beloved by the Germans, Bridget has a secret side...

Movie Review: Aliens in the Attic

Posted July 31, 2009 | 09:07 PM (EST)

There has been lots for the kiddies at the multiplex this summer from Harry Potter, Ice Age and Transformers sequels, to G-Force to Up. Some of those were excellent and some were down right terrible. This weekend's 20th Century Fox's Aliens in the Attic falls somewhere in the middle.

Best known as Seth Cohen on television's The O.C., Adam Brody has been pretty much laying low since the show went off the air in 2007 -- until now. The actor, currently shooting A Couple of Dicks in New York City, stars in the indie feature Death in Love, in...

Movie Review: I Love You Beth Cooper

5 Comments | Posted July 11, 2009 | 12:53 AM (EST)

He may love you, Beth Cooper, but the audience likely won't. Marred by bad acting, an unoriginal premise and characters that are no more interesting than card-board cut-outs, I Love You Beth Cooper feels like one of those upteenth straight-to-DVD sequels of American Pie or Bring it On that have...

Movie Review: The Hurt Locker

2 Comments | Posted July 8, 2009 | 12:56 AM (EST)

The Hurt Locker is a phenomenal movie whose whirlwind action and terrific performances easily make it a contender come awards season later this year. It's also a triumphant return for Bigelow, who's been largely MIA since directing K19: The Widowmaker seven years ago.

The film follows a squad of...

Predictable? You bet. Original? Hardly. But what keeps audiences of this lite-fare comedy in their seats is the undeniable on-screen chemistry between leads Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. The two are so adept at comedy and have so much fun with one another, viewers watching The Proposal won't be able...

Movie Review: Observe & Report

Posted April 9, 2009 | 11:53 PM (EST)

Don't confuse Observe and Report with that other mallcop movie "Paul Blart: Mallcop." The latter was a fuzzy, feel-good family comedy starring Kevin James as a lovable, goofy head of security at a mall. Observe, on the other hand, is much darker, often violent, bizarre and mostly unfunny movie starring...

With the Academy Awards upon us, it's freebie time again. This year, star wattage was considerably lower than in previous years though there was no shortage of gifting suites around town.
