Here's How Collaboration And Servant-Leadership Can Take A Business To The Next Level

I believe part of good leadership is showing my team the enthusiasm and passion I have for the business, while also hearing from them what their goals are for their individual careers. Working alongside them allows me to see their strengths and determine where there is room for improvement. Conversely, my sales associates are able to get an up-close view into what it really takes to run a luxury real estate and lifestyle company. It's a win-win for everyone.

When I founded Nan and Company Properties right from my kitchen table, I knew I wanted the kind of company where my team saw me roll up my sleeves and work right alongside them. This servant-leadership style of management has helped the firm grow exponentially in its first two years in operation. The strategy is clearly working, as Nan and Company Properties was named Best Places to Work by the Houston Business Journal for the second year in a row.

I firmly believe that you never stop learning, no matter what stage in business or life you're in. That's why I enjoy working side-by-side with my support team and real estate agents. When you're young, everyone expects you to automatically know about every new piece of technology that comes out, so everyone on my team helps one another stay up-to-date on the latest gadgets and software, which ultimately benefits our clients.

Being in close proximity to one another also allows for spontaneous brainstorming with colleagues, quick sharing of resources, and insight into all facets of the business - from customer service and human resources to sales and marketing. This management style promotes individuality and sends the message that each person has qualities that bring value to the company on every level.

Because everyone on our team works closely together, we've gotten to know each other and form great relationships. These relationships also extend to our families and close friends, so we've been able to create what feels like a family. We also have a pretty diverse team, which allows us to tap into everyone's strengths and get unique perspectives on any issue. The characteristics that make us different are also what add to the strength of the company - and it adds a lot of fun to our day.
