The year just past was a notable one in the career -- and surely also the life -- of Kevin Kline. Notably busy, and at times disappointing. But ultimately, and happily, triumphant.
The curiosity resides, to begin with, in the remarkable amount of time Mr. Kline spent on New York stages. It is not that common for well-known actors to undertake a major theatrical role these days. Years can pass between stage engagements for actors with established television or movie careers. But Mr. Kline, a veteran who has begun appearing more frequently in theater in recent years, spent the spring climbing Mount Lear at the Public Theater, then almost immediately swashbuckled onto Broadway in the fall in "Cyrano de Bergerac."
