Sri Lankan Rebels Cornered; Violence Continues (VIDEO)

The Liberation Tigers Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a Sri Lankan rebel group seeking independence from the Sinhala government, has been forced to withdraw to a 30 x 20 kilometer strip of land -- now the Tamil Tigers' only stronghold in the island country, according to the Sri Lankan Daily Mirror. The Sri Lankan Army has been taking over areas once occupied by the LTTE since the rebel organization lost their de facto capital to the government in December.

This Al-Jazeera English video shows the havoc wreaked by both sides in the war-torn country. More than 300,000 Sri Lankans have been displaced by the fighting and about 70,000 have been killed in the civil war. The government vows that this is the final battle against the militant Tamil Tigers.

The Lanka Sun reports that Sri Lankan Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa will not give amnesty to the LTTE leadership, but will try the leaders and instigators of the conflict once the fighting subsides and the Tamil Tigers surrender.
