One Book, One Chicago Author Sandra Cisneros Says City 'Makes Me Despair'

Mayor Daley's 16th selection today for the One Book, One Chicago program was written by an author who said her literary achievements came despite growing up in Chicago.

Daley picked the 25th anniversary edition of "The House on Mango Street," calling it "a wonderful book." It was written by author Sandra Cisneros, who grew up in Humboldt Park.

"If I'm an artist, it's despite Chicago, not because of it," Cisneros said during a 1992 visit to Chicago from her adopted hometown of San Antonio, Texas.
