Burhanuddin Rabbani, Former Afghan President, Survives Taliban Ambush

Burhanuddin Rabbani, a former Afghan president, has survived a Taliban ambush in northern Kunduz province, officials have said.

Rabbani, now a member of parliament, was travelling on a road in the Ali Abad district of Kunduz on Thursday when Taliban fighters ambushed his convoy with rocket-propelled grenades and gunfire, Habibullah Mohtashim, the chief of the district, said on Thursday.

No one in Rabbani's convoy was hurt, while three fighters died in a clash with bodyguards and police, Mohtashim said.

Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, claimed responsibility for the attack.
