Pedro Espada Jr. Seizes New Role In Senate

Three months after a State Senate revolt catapulted him to infamy and power, Mr. Espada - audacious, unapologetic, a magnet for prosecutors - is seizing on his new role. His fellow Democrats, who elevated Mr. Espada to the leadership post in exchange for reversing his defection to the Republicans, privately express hope that they can contain his ambitions and sometimes outrageous behavior. But time spent alongside the 55-year-old Puerto Rico-born legislator - who has racked up as many losses as victories in two decades running for public office - makes clear that Mr. Espada will not be easily contained.
