Niles Girl, 8, Accidentally Shot In Face By Teen Brother

An 8-year-old Niles girl is recovering Sunday night after her 13-year-old brother accidentally shot her in the face while they were playing with what they thought were toy guns in the north suburb.

The incident happened about 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the 8600 block of North Oketo Avenue in Niles, the Chicago Tribune reports. The girl and her brother were playing with toy guns in the basement of their home when the boy pulled out a .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun and shot the girl.

The bullet went through the girl's cheek and she was conscious when paramedics arrived, police told the Tribune. She was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Medical Center in Park Ridge where she was listed in "stable" condition.

The children's parents were home at the time. The Tribune reports:

Police said they spoke to the father of the children who said he did not know how the gun ended up in the home. [Niles Police Sgt. Tom] Davis said the boy may have taken the gun from a relative's home in Chicago without his family's knowledge.

No charges had been filed in the incident Sunday night.
