Nashville To Help Homeless With "Adopt a Meter" Program

Nashville, Tennessee's Mayor, Karl Dean, is hoping a new city-wide advertising program involving parking meters will bolster homeless outreach programs, according to the Nashville Business Journal.

Through the "Adopt a Meter" program, businesses will be asked to donate money that will be used to refurbish old parking meters and install them in areas with a high volume of pedestrians. Money deposited in the meters will be given to the city's homeless outreach programs. Sponsoring companies will have their logo prominently displayed on the decorated meters.

A similar program launched in Denver in 2007 now raises more than $100,000 a year and has reduced the occurrence of panhandling in the area, the article reports.
