After weeks of public scrutiny and many, many interviews; embattled lieutenant governor nominee Scott Lee Cohen officially dropped out of the race Friday evening.
Though Cohen announced that he would step down last Sunday, he submitted his formal letter to withdraw his candidacy on Friday, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Steve Brown, spokesman for House Speaker -- and state Democratic Party Chairman -- Michael Madigan, said the letter was received by the state party and will be submitted to the State Board of Elections on Tuesday.
Cohen's withdrawal came after allegations of domestic violence, steroid use and his non-payment of child support became public knowledge.
The Democratic Party state central committee is expected to choose a replacement for Cohen after March 5.
