'National Barefoot Week' Collects Shoes For People In Need

The first week in June, nonprofit organization Soles4Souls is celebrating National Barefoot Week, using events across the country to highlight the plight of people in need of shoes. The organization is challenging Americans to go barefoot to experience the difficulty of living without shoes firsthand.

During the week, Soles4Souls will be distributing 50,000 pairs of new shoes to Americans in need. Through shoe drives and other events, the organization is encouraging the public to get involved helping with their mission to provide shoes.

Participants can donate new or used shoes to a nearby drop-off center. Search by zip code to find the location nearest to you. You can get even more involved by organizing a shoe drive in your community or at your school. Ask your church to participate in Barefoot Sunday any Sunday during the month of June to collect shoes to donate to children around the world.

Individuals can also create personal fundraising pages to support Soles4Souls through donations from friends and family. The organization is also asking supporters to use social networking sites to promote National Barefoot Week -- by changing their profile picture or sending out a status update.
