Verizon Droid X Release: New Motorola Droid Announced

The new Motorola Droid X is official!

Verizon and Motorola announced the new Droid device at an event Wednesday.

Some of the phone's features:
  • 8-megapixel camera
  • HDMI out
  • 4.3-inch screen, 848x480 display
  • WiFi hotspot for up to five devices
  • Multitouch
  • Pre-loaded with SWYPE
  • GPS and Bluetooth
  • 3 mics--for video and noice cancellation
  • 8GB storage, in addition to microSD

The Droid X release is set for July 15 and its price will be $199, after a $100 rebate (along with a $29.99 smartphone fee for unlimited data. WiFi functionality will cost you another $20). It will ship with Android 2.1 operating system, although Android 2.2 should be available this summer.

Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha emphasized the Droid X's call quality--perhaps hoping to exploit the main weakness of Apple's iPhone and AT&T--highlighting the Droid X's "high performance diversity antennas" and noting "We pay attention to this, because we realize that people still use their phones.. as phones."

The phone's video capabilities were also emphasized: the Droid X will come with VCAST, Blockbuster (which will allow users to rent and buy films), NFL mobile, and other features.
