Cows and ditches are not a good mix, says Bayfield rancher Ross Gosney.

So when he went to his summer pasture one day and saw a trough cut in the earth for a coal-bed methane pipeline, he worried for his animals. "If a cow falls in the ditch, it ends up upside down because that's the way cows are," Gosney said. "It won't live but a few minutes."
