WHY: Thomas Eakins' painting Wrestlers (1899) was recently acquired by LACMA and serves as the centerpiece for their exhibition, 'Manly Pursuits: The Sporting Images of Thomas Eakins.' The decision to focus the exhibition around sport is in and of itself a rarity and provides viewers an opportunity to see the work of a less-often exhibited artist in a highly focused way: through the vast array of sports depicted in his body of work.
The exhibition is curated by Ilene Susan Fort, The Gail & John Liebes Curator of American Art at LACMA.
