September 11 memorial services were held today in New York, Washington D.C., and elsewhere throughout the country and the world, remembering the lives lost nine years ago.
Friends and family members of victims united with emergency personnel, officials and others at the World Trade Center site to pay respects, while President Barack Obama attended a service in Washington D.C.
"As Americans we are not - and never will be - at war with Islam," Obama said. "It was not a religion that attacked us that September day - it was al-Qaida, a sorry band of men which perverts religion."
This year, the 9/11 anniversary coincides with an ongoing debate about a proposed mosque not far from ground zero.
