$100 Million Donation To Newark Schools Comes With Conditions, Causes Controversy

When Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg donated $100 million to the Newark Public Schools system in September, advocates for school reform celebrated nationwide. But how the funds will be allocated is still unclear, and critics have begun speaking out, reports CNN.

Bob Braun, a columnist for the Newark Star Ledger, says the donation was made in the form of stocks to be distributed over five years, but no one knows how the money will be used.

What we do know is that Zuckerberg's donation came with strings. Newark public schools are currently run by the state of New Jersey. Under the new plan, Newark's Mayor Cory Booker, under the advisement of Governor Chris Christie, would develop an education plan.

Though Booker says he "would not take a formal role in running Newark schools," parents and students are still waiting to see what will come from Zuckerberg's hefty donation.
