In the first period of Colorado's 5-1 loss to Edmonton on Wednesday night, Avalanche defenseman Ryan O'Byrne had to leave early due to a bloody injury.
While going for the puck behind the Avalanche goal, Edmonton's Taylor Hall got tripped up and fell forward. The blade of Hall's skate sliced O'Byrne's face as he was falling to the ice.
The 26-year-old started bleeding as he skated off and went to the locker room. According to the Associated Press, O'Byrne was "escorted into the locker room for initial treatment before being taken to a nearby hospital."
"He suffered a bad cut on his face," Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said. "They had to take him to get sewn up. Anytime a skate gets near the face, it's always dangerous and scary. I'll know more tomorrow. I'm sure he'll be fine at the end of the day."
