Two Denver police officers who were recently fired in connection with an April, 2009 beating in LoDo are appealing their termination.
Denver Manager of Safety Charles Garcia fired officers Devin Sparks and Randy Murr, 2011 in March for their actions in a videotaped arrest of two men at 15th Street and Larimer in April, 2009.
Video (viewable below) shows the officers slamming Michael DeHerrera on the ground, beating him with a club and slamming his leg in a car door.
Despite the video, then-Public Safety Manager Ron Perea elected not to fire the officers after reviewing the case in August. The decision proved unpopular in Denver after video of the incident went viral, and DeHererra's family publicly called for the officers' firing.
That decision was reversed by Garcia in March.
The Denver Post first reported the officers' appeal, which was filed on the grounds that Garcia did not have the jurisdiction to fire them because they had already been disciplined for the incident.
