Jake Gyllenhaal In 'Man Vs. Wild': Star Joins Bear Grylls In Iceland Show

Jake Gyllenhaal Goes WILD On National TV

Jake Gyllenhaal has tackled some rough terrain in his career, from the Middle Eastern desert in "Jarhead" to parallel universes in "Source Code." Those adventures, however, all came on the safety of a film set, with a warm trailer waiting after the shoot.

For his next project, he won't be so lucky.

The Oscar nominee will guest star in an episode of the Discovery Channel's hit series, "Man vs. Wild," which will air Monday, July 11 from 9-10PM ET/PT. Following alongside the show's star, Bear Grylls, Gyllenhaal will have to rough it in the remote reaches of Iceland, where the pair will take on mountains, glaciers and active volcanoes.

Bet his agent loved this idea!

"For me, it's all about discovery," Gyllenhaal said, explaining his desire to head off into the wild. But did he survive? Grylls himself says he was very impressed with the star's ability to gut it out.

"The wild is always very revealing - not only physically but mentally," he said. "You've got to smile when it's driving horizontal hail and be able to face your fears and just get on and do it -- and on both of those accounts, Jake came up strong."

Gyllenhaal's next project won't be quite as wild -- he'll star in David O. Russell's comedy romance, "Nailed," about a waitress and a naive young senator. Then, he'll take a turn back to serious, toplining the cop drama "End of Watch" alongside Anna Kendrick and Michael Pena.
